How do I find the value on my 77 Fender Jazz Bass?
I've been looking for a way to get the value on this bass for awhile now but have not found a good site yet that has that info. so if anyone here knows the value or how to find out? Please post and let me know.

Thanks.

How 'bout try and sell it? That sounds probably like useless advice. But well we think it's sort of a relative concept... like the value may vary from person to person...
... I suppose you could make like you're selling it, and ask whomever
would still buy such a thing, some musicians left, it's not all hopeless yet,
and again, see what anybody's willing to give you for it...

you might luck out, like if you put it on Ebay or something,
"For the guy who wanted a Fender Precision circa 1977, Yeah, I got that, It's here."
and you get THAT Guy.

On a note that I knew or should have known would end up in there,
because Lesley's in the fucking band,

"also, instruments need to be loved..."

I think the implicating being if you love it why sell the bloody thing.

Thanks B

I'm selling it cause I don't have enough strength in my arm to play it or it would be staying with me. I've been told by a few people that it was worth a lot, like 14 grand so yeah if that's the case I'm selling. If it's only worth a few hundred I'll keep it.

There must be some way of finding out the worth?

I imagine there SHOULD be a way of finding out it's estimated value on the current market, though specifically what that method might be, I'm not sure...

it nearly goes without saying, or by now possibly could go without saying,

that the thing has one kind of value when it's some asshole bragging
about his shit,

and another thing being the one trying to sell it,
because almost universally, anyone you likely have available to sell it to,
will maybe want it, but probably not want to pay what it is worth
if it WERE worth 14 grand or whatnot, Holy Moly that's a lotta
lotta enchiladas.

One sneaky way of getting maybe some idea of it's value,

is make like somebody lookin' to buy one.

You know,

"Hey, anybody got a decent Fender Precision bass circa 1977 for sale?
Whatta ya want for it? Make me an offer, I wanna hear about it.
Thanks, Murray."

And then people try to sell Murray theirs if they have one,
and you'll see what it is they think they're going to get for one.

So I'm sorry, I don't quite seem to understand,
do you have an illness which makes it now harder to play?
I'd ask if the action is set too high, but you'd think a Fender Precision
had its action set just fine... Did you suffer with a not playable instrument
for years, and now you've had it, dammit, you've just had it?
And you don't care who knows? No wait, that one may be me.
The instrument in my case has been my life, but at least
I'm learning how to tune the damned thing...

One thing I think is a constant,
patience is a good factor if you're trying not to be ripped off...
like, if you looked around long enough, you may find a buyer,

I wonder if there are any chat groups or forums,
about people who love Fender guitars and bases and stuff...

then you could try to 'Hi I'm a guy lookin' to buy' trick,
and see what you learn out of that.

The rule of thumb across the board seems to be,
it's one value if they're the ones selling it,
and entirely another if they're the ones buying it. Oddly enough.

People are funny and sometimes smelly creatures.

But selling an instrument, when you need the money,
almost never ends impressively. They always know.
If you need the money, they always know.
You gotta be able to tell 'em to go fuck 'emselves.

Hi A

Yeah I had Lyme Disease for over 20 years before they found it so I have some right side weakness along with a host of other things that I won't bother people here with.

I went just about every route you mentioned including the I want to buy it one. No one had one for sale but they did try to sell me every other kind of fucking Fender guitar you can think of. I went to a Fender Forum and asked there and the closest they could get me to an answer was go to the Fender Site and try looking it up there.

I went to the Fender Site and the Damn search engine wouldn't go far enough back for me to check it. Also, I don't need the money so and can wait as long as I want. I'm just looking for an estimate but again even on the Fender Forum I posted in I got prices from 1200.00 to 8 grand.

I'll figure it out sooner or later.

Thanks for the input.

Okay, well if you are not in a hurry,

best thing I can think of,

and not everyone can do it, it's too much for me to get my head all around,
but you could post it on ebay.

My one experience with ebay is from a long time ago,
we never sold anything, but I did like that one can set the price,
like a minimum of bid, and you could then conceivably
set the price at 14 grand. I mean, look, if there's no hurry,

then why the fuck NOT put the fishing pole in the water
and see if fish bite.

You decide what the fucking thing's worth. Boom. 14 Grand.
If you don't need the money, you can fuckin' play with it something silly.

You could decide the fucking thing's worth twice that.
Tell yourself it's worth twice that. Now forget who just said that.
Then just remember
"I can't remember where I heard it, but somebody told me
this fuckin' thing's worth twice that"...

Rare Vintage Authentic Fender Precision Bass, Circa 1977.

Take a bunch of nicely done photos of it, maybe in various lighting...
Sell the idea of how fuckin' cool it is as well as the physicality
of the thing itself.

I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable asking about your health.
May God Work Miracles In You. May You Be Healed. Completely.
Saying this may not help, I still wish it for you though. That you be healed.

But that's all I got on this, try ebay, set the price,
and they either bid on it, or they don't,
and if they don't,

you can open up a new bid.

the rules of it as far as I remember are,

if someone makes the bid, you can't back out of selling it...

but if no one meets your minimum bid, all can go twiddle their diddles,
because you don't have to sell it to anyone at that point,

and you can keep doing it. Just keep opening up a new bid.
Set the minimum, at the amount of money you wanna see for it.
Because if you don't need the money, well then you really don't
have to worry about if you sell it or not.

It's Buy This, For This Price (or better), Or Fuck You Have A Nice Day.

And you never know, you might have that guy who was actually looking
for this exact instrument down to the year find you, and he's happy to pay
an insane amount of money for it. Well it's all insane to me, Man.
I never have any. Money.

I know all too well how bad they schtupp you when you need money
and have to sell an instrument.

~L

Not uncomfortable talking about my health. I try not to mention it too much because some...some people and not here actually told me to shut the fuck up about my health problems so now I shut the fuck up. LOL.

Steve, there are lots of sites that will give you a ballpark.

I can't verify the accuracy of any of them, but it's easy to find out what going prices are - As L-J said ebay can give you some idea, but in checking 'sold items' there's not a lot in the list.

Here are some tips from one site:
Online Guitar Appraisals

There are a bunch of blue book types that use a Carfax model (pay per search or number of searches), but my guess is you're just trying to get an idea.

I did a quick Google search for free used guitar values and that will keep you busy all day.

I also checked Guitar Center to see what they went for there, and what's available.

Hope this helps, good luck,

Glenn

Hi Steve,
I have a 1962 Fender bass that I wanted to know the value of last year. I took the neck off and at the bottom of the neck there was a manufacture date of 2-10-62 written in pencil. Then there's the serial number on the back plate of the neck also. Sometimes the necks get changed over the years so you may want to check that it's original equipment per date. There's also the volume and tone pots which should also date the bass.Fender will be the best site to confirm the actual age and era as well as a ball park figure. I said era because when Fender sold to CBS it dramatically effected the price of the basses and guitars. The other sites will try to low-ball you and get you to sell it to them (kinda like "car sharks"). Take pictures of all those points I said and take the pics to a reputable dealer for an estimate then talk "consignment" to get the most money out of it if you want to sell it.

My bass was part of my fathers collection and has the original metal cover over the pick-ups. They only did that for a couple of years plus I have the matching "piggy-back" Fender tube amp.
The bass alone is worth about 10k to the right buyer......

I have pics on my page of my 62 bass
1958 Gibson electric mandolin
1934 Gibson L-7 archtop (grandfathers)
1972 Gibson RD standard (about 500 made)
(all of those I played on my first IAC tune "smile" as at tribute to my dad)

I hope you're in better health for the Holidays and for the future Steve.

Good luck with your search.

D.

Great tips Duane and Lars! Thank you.

I'll check all this info out later on. Felling pretty good today. I take FECO now and have been for about five months and it really is working so I'm hopeful.

Thanks to all of you for the help.
