How many of you do collaborations? Song added now.
After hearing what a great job Lesley did on my song Better Change Your Ways it got me thinking.
I am a solo operation over here so I play all the parts to my songs and of course do the mixing too.
So, I sure could use some help if any of you have spare time.
What I would really like to see is an area where we can upload unfinished songs and work on them in that area.
This would depend on a few things like how many here are into that kind of thing and how hard it would be to add a Collab Area.
I have up and down days so I can't guarantee I would be here daily but I would sure try.
Anyhow, opinions?

I've done a lot of them and many have been great experiences. However I've also done some that were totally bad experiences - while they were happening and also afterwards. The problem is you never really know what people are like, you think you do and then you get surprised.
My current band is a collaboration with guys I met online and have known for many years, we have a great comfort level between us.

Hi Steve,
I have worked with Byron on a couple of his songs. I am in process of covering a shoe city sound song.
The problem is that people have limited time and different ideas on how things should work and sometimes the process just breaks down. I like your idea of an area to post unfinished stuff but I don't know how well that would work. I am also a one man band outfit many of us here are. What I would suggests is if you know a particular artist you want to work with contact them directly and see if you can work something out with them.
You and Lesley seem to get along maybe he would like to work on more of your material that is something you would have to discuss with him privately. For me I'm pretty full on projects right now I don't really have the ability to work on more than I already am.

Ken

Actually I found a couple of really good collab sites I found online.
I loved what Lesley did for me but I also would like more Musicians to work with on my songs and theirs.
I'll let you know how I make out.

Steve,
I've worked on a few songs with a number of people here. You may have done some keys for me too (I think....)
Matter of fact, I really enjoy adding different people and styles to my music. I find with more "seasoned" musicians, the songs seem to flow, and the ideas open new doors of directions.
On the other hand, playing tracks for other people is always a challenge and also a lot of fun. Different rhythms and progressions keeps me on my toes.
Anytime you have an open spot, let me know.
Peace,
D.

Ok
I will be uploading a song soon that I would like to at least hear some ideas on.
Every part in this song can be replaced if you have a better part.
It will be on the top of my page and so far it's called Down The Street.
I'll get it on my page soon.

I just put it up now.
It's not a great mix but I think it will do.
The vocals are loud and not spot on but I did them both this morning so yeah gotta do them over.
So everyone that wants in just go to my page and check it out. If you hear a part you would like to add? We'll try it out for sure.
If you hear a part you think you can do a better job on, yep do it up.
I'm pretty easy to work with and I'll be adding a few of these so if you don't like this one or don't have the time? Don't worry I have more.
I can take anything out of the mix for you too if that need be.

Sounds nice, Steve.
John thinks he hears a skiffle song in it....
(which means it'd be a bit more up-tempo if we had at it...)
Maybe we'll think about doing a version of this if you are okay with that....
Not right yet, I totally needs me a few solid days of some solid rest....
I just put out a million records last night (put a thread up on the Pipeline
about it, damn near a million it feels like, I was up all night doin' it)
and I am fit to drop in a neat heap. Talk with you later about this...
You can let me know in the meantime if you fancy the idea...

Hi Lesley
Thanks
On this one? I'd like to leave the tempo where it is but if you want to do a different version, I'm fine with that.
What do I think this song needs? A good lead for sure which is why I didn't even attempt one. Percussion would be nice too. Background vocals but don't try those till I get a better mix on the vocals.
I have a Piano panned right that I think the way it's played would have to stay but if someone that plays Keys can do a better job with the same part, I'd be thrilled.
I also have a Guitar panned to the left, that could probably be replaced with a tasteful part.
Like I said. This song is open to everyone. Sorry about the tempo but I really love the tempo so it would have to stay there which is at 110 bpm.

Hey Steve, Just heard Down The Street, pretty good concept.
I like the lyrics, good storytelling.
Yes, the piano should remain the same. Bassline too.
I can also hear more percussions on it, more beats at the tempo you played.
Lesley, I don't hear it as a skiffle song (that style is basically dead these days)
but what I did hear was something I picture the Kinks doing!
For some reason their song Waterloo Sunset popped in my head!
Maybe you can make a Kinks-style version of Steve's song!

You can still do it if you want Lesley. It's not like your version is replacing mine.
Or if you hear a part or parts you would like to try, go for that.
I got too tired to continue now and....
I have to pick up my car shortly so I have to muster up some energy.
They had to replace all the brake lines and transmission lines. The brake lines rotted out and leaked behind the firewall so I never saw fluid or knew I had a problem till my brakes went to the floor. Lucky I was home when it happened. So 1100.00 later damn!

To answer your question Steve, I play guitar and bass mostly. On my songs the drums are programmed, but I play most everything else. (some Keys, Mandolin, etc.)
Sorry it took so long to get back. I live on the west coast and work most of the day.
Seems you've got some fine people to help you out so far. I'll listen to what you have and let you know my two cents. : )
Peace,
D.
OK had a listen and I hear a kind of "New Orleans" kinda feel with a bluesy style guitar and a few simple horns in the background. You would have to use some MIDI for the horns of course.
Just my thoughts / Idea.

Hi Duane
Cool. I have no time limit on this or any of my songs but I think I need to clarify some things.
I'm not looking for a co-writer on my songs cause they're already written.
I am looking for..
I'm not a good lead guitar player or lead anything so that spot is pretty much always open.
I know a lot of Drummers here that could put a beat down better than I can.
Percussionist are always welcome.
Background vocals too
What I am good at.
I've played the Bass for years so I don't think I'll ever need a Bass part but I'm open minded and will listen to anything.
I usually like to do the lead vocals on my songs but I have a few that I think a good singer could do justice. For instance my song The Penitentiary Blues. I've tried that so many ways and I just can't get that Damn song to sound right.
So most of the time when I say collaboration, I'm looking for enhancement of the already established song I have.
I'm sorry if it came through looking like something else.
This is what I'm going to do.
I'm going to put all the files for this song on Dropbox and post a link here when it's done. Then any of you can download all of it or just the parts you need to hear.
For me, that's the best way for Musicians to really get the feel of the song.
Again apologies if I misled anyone. So sorry about that.

Steve. You're a Very Good Singer. Don't sell yourself short, Buddy.
Jay. You think I should do a 'Kinks' version?
I don't do cover songs anymore. I just decided. It's been fun.
But either I can and this goes for the boys as well,
either we can do it, or we can't.
All to it.
Have a good and productive day, Everyone. ~L

No worries Steve.
I'm the same way. Matter of fact, I'm working with Shoe City Sound to remake a Bryon Tosoff tune right now. The song sounds really good so far.
I told Dolores that she's in charge of production and that my input is only ideas/suggestions. I think this one will be a real treat for everyone.
If I do collabs it has to be a good working enviroment. The writer of the song be it music or lyrics is always in charge. I can only bring my ideas and musician abilities to the table. If it works and sounds good to that person GREAT! If it doesn't, that's OK too. The song has to sound good to the WRITER.
I'll check out your tracks soon. First, I need to focus on what 's on my plate now.
Peace,
D.

PS...
I just realized,
even if I could do as you say,
it's still a cover, of Steve's song.
I've instituted now a policy, for American Lesley Jane,
and BEATLESEX.... (as Commander In Chief of BEATLESEX)
that we shall heretofore no longer do covers.
We covered Steve's other song, "Better Change Your Ways"...
we enjoyed doing so.
That was the last cover.
From now on, we write 'em, or we don't even bother making a record.
Make it or break it time.
Cheers...

There are still parts available for this song. I'm going to post a link here to the separate files for the song. It will be in my Dropbox. If you don't have Dropbox I don't know if it will work but if not all you have to do is download it. The app is free and it's really great, especially for the iPad gang.

I think you'll have to maybe copy the link and open it in a new browser window but not sure.
Please let me know if any of you do this and if it worked. I already got Jason the files. You can download these even if you just want to mess around with your mixing skills too. Not that it's finished yet but still could be fun.

Sad?
Why be sad?
Forever and ever, people will know Steve White
as the guy American Lesley Jane and/or BEATLESEX last covered in recording.
From there on out, we only did our own stuff.
Imagine, your song was so good, that was that.
It was all on us, make it or break it.
That's something to be proud of, Steve.
"Better Change Your Ways" is a Phenomenally Good Song. True Greatness.
John Friggin' Lennon says so, Steve. That's why he had to sing the lead vocal.
He wouldn't let George or I do it. We hit the back up vocals.
That was a song so good, we won't even try to replicate our success with it.
Not bad at all.
Keep Singing, Keep Writing.
And Thank You Steve,
you've reminded all of us,
What a Truly Great Song Is,
and spurred our old dead tired asses to continue to 'Go For It'.
Don't Worry... Be Happy.... Keep Writing, Keep Singing....
We Shall Keep Trying For The Lost Chord. In 3 or 4 part harmony.
And other George on the keyboards sometimes.
Maybe we'll invite Keith who just crossed over,
though I really don't think I can play well enough to facilitate him doing much.
