The puzzling duality of John McCain
I just watched him do a comedy routine for some dinner he and Obama and Hillary and others were at tonight and he was so charming, had great timing and what was most surprising, he ended with a very warm endorsement of Obama the man. with words so well chosen and sincere it almost seemed impossible that his evil twin McCain could go around trying to paint Barack in such a misleading way, not to mention all the lies he's sanctioned by his ads and his disturbed incompetent running mate.
If you want to hear what McCain really thinks of Obama, you can probably see a YouTube of his routine on Thurs night all over the web. It's quite different than how he represents these things on the campaign.

I get the feeling these folks all get together at exclusive dinner parties and laugh about who insulted who the best... sorta like " Yo mama's so fat ... " sort of a thing... only with much higher stakes.
They just need to keep the illusions of different sides going when really they're all on the same side ... just have different ways of wanting to run the house. Maybe those that want to be President are the ultimate maid ... it's sadomasochistic, who would want to clean up that much of a mess when it's always been making the messes that is the most fun ... hey, wait a minute ...

McCain was hilarious. Bush could tell a good joke too. Obama's jokes were good on paper but he performed them poorly. His timing was way off. Maybe it's for the best.
With things the way they are now, maybe it's better to have a president who isn't funny.
As far the puzzling duality of John McCain. It's very simple. He's a good man who saw the brass ring slipping away from him when he wasn't nominated in 2004. He moved far to the right because he had to solidify the base of the party but in the process he painted himself into a corner and could not get back to the center. He knew this was his last chance at the presidency and he compromised some of his principles and I think he really struggled with this in his heart. He thought that being the tough guy might get him elected and then he would go back to being the decent John McCain again. But though his comic timing is is perfect, his political timing is not. Obama has a rendevouz with history.

Holo, You are a smart man....Politics is dirty business. Negative campaigning plays to the majority of people...It wins elections. McCain wants to be President, his campaign manager is calling the shots... he signed off on the strategy, maybe reluctantly. I can see in the debates he is not comfortable being really mean spirited. He comes off flat in speeches and debates becuase he is not a great communicator. In a relaxed atmosphere, the true person comes through.
I have no doubt McCain the man is a good person, and I doubt Obama has any ill will towards him. Obama is a career politician, he is aware of what is going on. I think the reason he can remain so cool is he relizes this and is not taking it personal.
No matter what happens, McCain will be a big part of Congress the next four years, and I hope he and Obama can work together in a B-partisan manner. I think McCain has a record of doing this. If Obama is elected, he knows he will need to be able to work with him.
On another note, the polls are showing some puzzling activity. I hope the election is not decided on race, but I believe what people say in polls is not what they will do when it is just them in a voting booth. We had a similar thing happen in California, Bradley, the Afican -American mayor of Los Angeles was running for Governor. He showed very promising leads in the polls, but he lost on election day. Pundits deemed it the "Bradley effect" and stated they believe voters could not bring themself to Vote for a Black Man, even tho when asked they said they would. I hope this is not the case. This "effect" might be worth upwards to 4 points in the polls. The recent Gallup and AP polls have Obama ahead by only a few points. It is very perplexing. I think he really messed up by mentioning "spreading the wealth" that hits a nerve with many people who work hard for their money.
We shall see...we have three weeks to go. At this point I am just praying the person elected is wise enough to get us out of a real mess. God Speed to Obama and McCain, one will be President of the United States, the other will still influence policy.
