My Farfisa, Me and my little brother. Genova circa 1966
Well BJ, Sam & LyinDan, you asked for a Farfisa picture and here it is. I owned two over the years, this one and a much later version which was quite funky where the black keys where white and the white keys were gray. It actually had pretty good sounds with the exception of the percussion. I later sold it to buy an L120 hammond which I hooked up to a Lombardi Leslie.

The one in the picture I used until 1974 when I left the band. I had it on top of my hammond and I used it for strings effects etc.

Giuseppe I at the Ovest in Genova. Circa 1966

Thanks BJ, that is the one!
It had those lever controls instead of drawbars like the vox or hammond.

I forgot that I also had a spinet version which came in a fantastic looking piece of furniture with a built in leslie, but it sounded pretty bad, so I changed it for this one.

Ciao,

Vincenzo

The Man With No Band

That is way cool ! ... the one my buddy played was a hideous reddish orange color ... of course he may have even painted it that way for all I know ... :) ... It really did sound good though ... but man did he catch a lot of hell for not wanting to give it up ... Ed played that thing when we were doing gigs as late as 1981 ... and I'll bet he still has it too ! ... I can still remember how it weighed much heavier than what it looked like ...

BJ,

Great photos, where did you get them??

You must be a Farfisa collector or something. I think that my father (He has been dead since 96) kept my first Farfisa, and it should still be in his shed!! I doubt it would still work though.

Sam & Andy,

The standard color for the models that were around in 1965 was gray with a black band/trim, but you could get a deep red which looked really cool at the time. I must admit that I eventually did paint mine Ferrari red later on!!

Hi John, good to see you here!! Going to get in touch soon.

Lars,

I did not know such a song existed. Are they actually using a farfisa in the clip? If it is I think it’s hooked up to a Leslie
Great Clip!!

Thanks for you interest!! I feel a little nostalgic now….

My first keyboard was actually a Bontempi (They used to make good accordions). We bought it because it was cheaper and lighter. It had a good sound, but one terrible fault which I did not discover until we were doing a very important gig. It played fine during the day, but if you were playing outdoors in the evening, the humidity would send those tone generators crazy. A terrible night was had by all!!!

You've made me miss my Vox, you know the one with reversed keys. It sounded just like a Farfisa. I had hammond envy big time back then.

Found memories of the Vox. When I had a Farfisa I really liked the Vox. It had cool reversed keys and drawbars!! But I had big Hammond envy too, so when I got one, I did not need anything else...except that then I discovered the Korg synthesizer...sob sob sob...All I had was a Davoli.

Like I said, I HAVE the Vox.

Back in 79-80, this was the organ I was playing (I switched off between keyboard and guitar in that band) when we played "Brown Sugar", which made the women strip naked and the management lock the doors. It was all due to the Vox sound (through a hammond leslie), and my sexual fingering of the keys on it.

However, I always remember my bud's Farfisa, and always felt somewhat inferior for not playing one.

I remember having a lot of fun back in the 80's at the mall, when Hammond came out with their electronic imitations of the old tonewheels. I really grilled the salesmen at the organ store about the finer points of tonewheels vs digital electronics :)

My vox organ was stolen from a porch in Akron in 76 or 77 along with my Standel amp....maybe you've got mine...

I'm sad now thinking about it.

The other day I posted one of my old tunes (from 1978) in response to someone asking for sad songs. I gave it a listen today and realized that we used a Farfisa. I think it belonged to Mark Mothersbaugh from Devo. It's

Lady Soul (1978)

Nice sound Sly!

I like the overall feel and sound of the song, probably because it is from the 70's. It could be a Farfisa, the vibrato seams Farfisa. It could be one of the compact family, because I think I can here the 2nd harmonic. The Compact did not have a 5th armonic, but the professional did.

Thanks for sharing.

Vincenzo
