320 Kbs VBR mp3 or FLAC ??
Which would you use and can you tell the difference?
Just experimenting with flac at the moment, not sure if I can tell the difference between then at the moment. Might put the headphones on in a minute...

Even through some reasonable (ish) earphones I can't tell which is which, ie they sound the same to me, so VBR mp3 wins on filesize. For stoing for general listening at anyrate.

Not sure ... I always like to say ..."reality is built on a sliding floor" .... That is, when I'm talkin' to myself... :)
To answer your first question though .... Personally I can't tell the difference in sound quality ... but my ears are not very well educated either ...

To go one step farther ... I can hardly tell the difference between a 320 Mp3 and a wave file ... I have to listen very, very close to pick which is which ... and sometimes I've found that I have picked the wrong one ...

I remember when all we had to record on was a cheap reel to reel. Then one day the guitarrist bought a Revox R to R, and that made our day!! We did everything on that thing, and we thought it was pretty fantastic, and it probably was. Then the only way you could send your music somewhere was through the post!!
I can tell much difference either, but may be the instruments can.

For me, it comes down to application. For IAC and my website, I generally use VBR mp3 (set to highest q).
FLAC is great for archival purposes being a lossless compression format. Many players can also play flac files without needing to be decompressed first too.
As for telling the difference, I am a professional mastering engineer and have highly trained ears combined with almost textbook hearing so I can tell the difference between any mp3 and an uncompressed format.
I must say though, that the difference between a high quality VBR mp3 or a 320k mp3 and an uncompressed 16 bit file is not that great.
Then again, the difference (to me at least) between a 96KHz / 24 bit file and ANY mp3 is fairly significant. All my newest songs have been recorded at 96KHz and 24 bit and my final highest quality masters are usually DVD-Audio with the Protools sessions backed up (twice and in different physical locations) on hard drives.
For the average listener with a typical hifi system or an ipod, they are usually more than happy with any reasonably good mp3.
