No expectations, no disappointments - Auset
Many years ago, probably 10 plus, Auset mentioned something in a conversation on facebook we had and it has stuck with me ever since, No expectations, no disappointments.
Auset
This statement she made was profound to me and has become one of my mantras and something I have shared with many people that I have worked with in the Promotion Biz.
In 2005 I already had been using DMDS digital submissions to radio for a couple years for many of my clients and somehow I guess Robert and I must have discussed this, We had numerous long telephone conversations and many back and forth emails about how this system worked (Robert also ran rootsmusicreport.com)So in time I did the best I could and I answered questions Robert Bartosh was asking me. How does the company I use work ,what were the costs, and other aspects about the business of digital promotions systems
I was one of the first indie promoters to use the DMDS yangaroo system and was very successful on getting my clients lots of downloads and airplay in the early days of this brand new technology of getting artists music to radio
DMDS which was one of the very first digital submission companies to use this system to promote ones music to radio
In time on 05/05/05 radiosubmit launched and I tell ya, man the success they had and I had was phenomenal. Being onboard early for the artists I helped made me a go to guy and when people found out I did this promo system they certainly wanted to take advantage of it and my relationship with Robert Bartosh was a primary springboard to my success and all the artists I worked with,
Over time within 5 years, more and more artists found out about this system, they would use it themselves or labels who represented them found that it was the go to thing to get onto radio easily
Then of course the inevitable happened, ,there was a deluge and an ocean of people musicians artists, promoters labels had jumped onboard,
The ability to wade through all the music releases just became beyond getting the same results. As for me, I had such great contacts in the radio part, knowing 100's of music directors around the world I was still able to get great results for the people I represented.
About 5-7 years ago, things started to unravel, stations changed their format from rock blues, country folk etc and numerous indie stations closed their doors, ,small stations and college stations were being gobbled up by the big corporations and eventually they went oton different formats
I did not get the results I did in the past and play listings for artists, but still managed to keep my clients happy with their music getting into the world of listeners
Last year I retired from the music rat race for promoting others and for the last 5 years have been helping my own self, not anything great going on, a few notable successes though. small in the big scheme of things, but I do it for the joy. If something tweaks a few people, and I get downloads for my music to radio , that is a win, I do get emails from people who like my music on occasion, that is pretty awesome. so, there you have it. Music Industry and Business and all is almost impossible to crack, though some here some day will become famous and or well known , I know of many I would like to see get a break, indiemusicpeople has a lot of great talent.
So a longwinded backstory of my years promoting working with music directors, building relationships, (which is critical) and maintaining a taste of reality to the entire system.
As Auset said, no expectations, no disappointments.
all the best
