The Zoom H2 Field Recorder is a Revolution for Me
They only cost about 150, and they have these stereo mics built in. Little hand held with an adapter that makes it fit right on a mic stand. Well, the quality on these guys mics comes pretty damn close to what I do in my studio with my At 3035 mic.
But the big difference is I'm not in the studio, I'm out in the wild and the set up is so simple it's like something you would have dreamed. Put it on the stand, press one button, pour out what you have.
This is a wonderful invention for people like us. Here is a track I did at the ocean. It's "Julia," the John Lennon song. Part of a series of stuff I'm trying to record for a demo. Don't know if this version is gonna be the keeper, but you can sure hear how the H2 works.
Gets you out of the claustrophobic studio and away fro the wires and machines, and right out in nature with your music front and center. I think I could load tracks done on this machine into my home recorder and use them as the center to dub on, too.
The guitar is my little portable Baby Taylor. The whole set up is pretty light and, can easily go backpacking with you.

I have an H4 and it's especially useful to me as an interface to my pc.

I have an H2, too!
I think it's great. Using it to collect 'found sounds'. The quality is good, and damn, you can even multitrack with built in effects on this thing!. Originally got it to collect song ideas and such. It's a little big for that, so I also carry around a leetle beety thing. And it does indeed serve as a computer input, too. Nifty!

I bought the OLYPUS LS 10
24 bit 96 KHZ
I got it for my student journalists to do field recordings, interviews etc. and to plug into the board to Archive our radio shows.
I love it!
The built in mics are good, it's easy to use.
One of the best gizmos in my bag!

You can multitrack on the H4, four tracks. That one also incorporates Zoom effects like compressors, delays, ampsim, etc. The interface (leetle beety screen and lots of button pushing) takes a bit of learning. Straight ahead simple recording, though, push to arm and check levels, push again to start recording. H4 also has two xlr mic inputs with phantom power - very cool for external mics.
