'Silver Hands' Now Fantastically Overproduced (Wanna Be Armchair Critics?)
I took up on the advice you all gave on the old version.
Before the hi hat was way too loud and harsh on the snare track, so I dubbed in an extra snare thwack.
But then I also added these goodies:
ride cymbal
little piano
AND totally reworked the bass which was mud and somewhat uninspired before.
Then it all got a more solid mix (I think), and here it is. I guess what I wanna know is if this seems done now?

Overall I liked it better before. The drums sound more like you were looking for and they're fine, although I didn't think there was anything wrong with them before. But the bass is too obtrusive and busy here, it kind of gets in the way of the SONG and the vocal, which is 90% of what makes this song. Don't overthink it. I still like the song though, but when the CD comes out I'd be waiting for the re-release with the bonus tracks that included the original version.

Uh oh.
Thank you for your comments, I appreciate the insite....
However, this means I will now be going insane as I am beginning to be hopelessly lost on a song that I love....
I don't know if there is any way out anymore. I will just be lost among several mix attempts not knowing which way I was right and where I was wrong.
This is the hard part of being the independent g do it alone artist...
I was trying another mix last night, but even then I was getting that whacky feeling of not knowing which way is up or down anymore.
Why can't these things just mix themselves so all I would have to do is pour out my ideas on to the tapes? I have zillions of ideas, zillions, but we get stopped in our tracks trying to get them mixed well enough that others would hear what I was hearing when I laid it out....
But I thank you for your help...

I like the sound of the snare on this new version, although I do see what you mean about it sounding overproduced.
I have no clue as to where to do from here, either.
Maybe strip it down ENTIRELY and just keep it totally bare-bones?
Re-record that snare (only) to get it to sound "right" and keep it basic, acoustic and snare?
Like I said, I'm at a loss.
But I do think that it sounds good, anyway.

You know what Bob? . . . don't knock yourself out. Just key in on the song - the guitar and vocal. Those elements are already just fine. And that is the whole song right there. I do like the new snare.
With the Pity Whores I had the same dilemma with 'Ballad of McNasty'. I had an original version that had a great feel, a vibe, an intensity . . . . but I knew I could make it sound better, certain elements could be made better. I did a bunch of remixes and sure enough, those individual elements sounded better sonically to my ears. But the vibe and intensity was different. Everyone, and I mean everyone, preferred the original version for it's capturing the SONG and its intensity. So that's the version that ended up on the album, flaws and all.
I will make another go at it at some point in the distant future for my own amusement, but I think I will still not capture the original feel.
As for Silver Hands, its just the bass that's screwing with the vocal and guitar. You're a great singer and guitar player, let 'em shine Bob.

Very interesting sounds Bob ... I think each version has stood on it's own ... It's a good song and I think ... if one hadn't heard the others ... they would enjoy them all ...
As to this version ... I like the drums a lot ... and the over-all sound ...
my own personal opinion is that the right panned guitar is a little distracting in the first verse, I find it to close in the range of your superb vox and doesn't fit as well as the left panned guitar in tone ... Later it sounds fine ... just my arm chair critique ...

Bob - this is a great song. The drums sound very good. Just take out the harsh at hat, raise the vocal a little and don't start and stop the drums. They are holding the song together. You can leave them out in the intro but once they they come in, they should stay in but you can let them drop out near the end if you want to. As it appears now they are stopping and starting way too often and it breaks up the flow of the song. Don't panic! You're only one mix away from a fine sounding song.

Thank you all for the comments. I think a lot over what you all say.
I really came to see it like Sam was saying: I have three versions so far and one I am working on, and really I could settle with any of them. I think the latest is probably the best and I will likely beat that one, so I have to relax. It just gets so damn confusing when the mutiple takes start happening. I just gotta relax about it.
As for the drums coming in and out, that's the very oddness I like so much. I'm not really looking to perform anything differently. I know I do some sort of whacky things, but that's where I come from.
I just want to settle out all the tones and levels so the whacky things I've done can be heard properly.
I have a mix up on my studio right now from last night, but I haven't heard it in today's light. It has the ride cymbal still there, but turned down. It has some very carefully saught out tones, but you know, they were worked out last night. Today they may sound way off. We'll see.
