Clearly some of the most iconic songs of all time are the Beatles, whose songs have been performed by many well know orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and numerous other Orchestras
Of course Bob Dylan has performed with numerous orchestras as well

The same question about Dylan is more complicated because he's an acquired taste to begin with.

I think it depends on your generation. For me, I like a selection of their stuff, but not with the semi-religious fervour of someone forty years older than me. I think for genZ their hold is quite weak.

Yes Francesca, there are many way to look at these music matters.
"They've been going in and out of style/tho they're guaranteed to raise a smile."
Sgt. Pepper
Today, music is prob'ly 1000 X more democratized, vast masses can afford a home studio and give music a go. Back then in the 60s, the oxygen was sucked up by much fewer performers.

Well, happened to view a part of a bio about Taylor Swift.
By age 11, she was down in Nashville, knocking on music producer doors.
At age 14, a co. signed her to an "artist development" deal.
She modeled for Abercrombie & Fitch, and tried her hand at song-writing,
Have the feeling they "bought" her persona, upcoming pretty girl, hardworking, who would take direction/instructions...before she wrote a song...
In this bio. they say Taylor had a deal w RCA for a couple years, and when they wanted her to record other people's songs, she ended her contract w them, cause she wanted to record her own songs, so good for her...
For her, it worked out...

You know, when you look back at the last few hundred years of music, we are really only still familiar with a relative handful of the many composers there actually were. God knows where music is headed, but I think in a few hundred years people will know of the Beatles and Dylan like we know of Beethoven or Stephen Foster. Not everything they did was great, but I think the cream rises to the top and can last a very long time.

I’m not sure about the comparison with Beethoven or any other classical composer. The clue is in their title - they compose and allow orchestras and conductors to interpret their work. If you go to see a performance of a Beethoven symphony you don’t have a Beethoven version to compare it to and the conductor is an active participant in the production of the sound, leaning on past performances and offering their interpretation to future renditions. Rock bands or popular music generally tend to lean towards the original performer. Of course there are cover versions, but it isn’t the same thing - a three minute rendition of Johnny B. Goode is not the deeply involved adaptation of a symphony or other work for an orchestra.

Classical music has only been the tiniest niche throughout most of my life. I really can't imagine a scenario where it outlasts Hey Jude and Yesterday and Stairway To Heaven for that matter. but I guess all that remains to be seen.

The Pianoforte, which is an orchestra of and by itself, one of the most incredible instruments ever created, insane how it evolved. Such an amazing instrument. While growing up of course I was learning simple classical songs at first and developing and learning my craft on the piano, Inventions of Bach, early music styles of various composers , lots of technical elements scales arpeggios Chords the Hanon exercises to develop evenness of playing developing ones capabilities and technical prowess and studying theory and harmony history which laid the foundation for my works that where classical and pop driven. Instrumentals of course.
One of the greatest pieces I managed to work on and played for public consumption, if I can use that phrase is Beethoven's Piano Sonata "Pathétique" No.8 in C minor, Op.13 I dont have a recording of me doing it but there is a lot of performers who have videos of it online, it is an amazing piece of art and an incredible technique and color, nothing can hold a candle to it at all, so my opinion and I am am an expert on my opinion. Here is one of best performances I have ever heard online . I guess I better get back to improve my performance of this song and pull out the music and see if I can pull off an recording someday of it, yet I dont think I could even come close to this exception performance , stunningly beautiful and powerful display of musicianship and technical ability
Cheers and rock on,
ps I think Beethoven was the father of rock in his time. lol : )

I didn't mean to imply that the Beatles' work can compare to Beethoven's - it's apples and oranges. Just that Beethoven was the rock star of his day. The Beatles were everywhere, and known by everyone. Their musical relevance may wane, but historically, they helped define a whole decade, and I think that when future historians look back at the 60s, they can't help seeing the Beatles at every turn.
