The Myth of the Perfect Wave
You know how surfers have this quest for the perfect wave? - like, one day, they'll see the swell out on the horizon, and they'll just know. They start paddling ahead of it and pop up at the perfect time, and it becomes the ultimate boarding experience - Nirvana - and they ride it all the way into the beach, and if they never surf again, they will at least have had that perfect ride. But, the perfect wave doesn't really exist.
Sometimes I see songwriting like that - I see the song on the horizon - I start thinking about it and I can feel the power coming like a wave, and you think, "Maybe this is it - maybe this is the perfect wave." And then you ride it (write it) for a while, and a handful of people watch you ride it, and then the wave goes by, and you start looking for the next one. Every song is a ride.
