Difference between record label artists & Indie
One of the things that make a big difference between indie artists & record label artists, are the instruments! All instruments are of the very best made quality, very expensive & that makes the main difference in music creation! I rented a Gibson L5 Archtop guitar, a ten thousand dollar guitar, to do my song Michelle & If I were to have done it on my regular Jazz guitar, the song would not have turned out the way it did. Indie artist usely can only afford regular or less professional instruments & it's noticeable in their music creations! I recorded one of my songs using only Octaves like I did on my song Michelle with a Gibson & then did one of my other songs playing only Octaves on a regular fender guitar & there is no comparison to the song Michelle. If we all could afford the real deal instruments, we could all sound as good as the major artists who have everything going for them, by yours truely,,,, the record labels!

I was never a gear guy so I don't know enough to disagree with you on this.

I will say though that I am 200% certain that due to songwriting, indie music has provided better songs to listen to in at least the last 30 years.

I bought & sold close to 300-400 guitars way back in the day, one of the most beautiful sounding acoustics I ever heard was some offbeat Japanese model that sounded better than any of the several Martins I owned. (And the person who bought it was equally blown away by it.)

No matter what the price of any guitar, none of them would sound good in my hands, seems the real players can make anything sound good. Electronics can make a big difference, that's a given..

I will say though, I did get some good complements from the staff at one guitar shop.. Something about having "a tough" which I guess is a good thing while demoing a Ric one day.. That was nice to hear..

You know, what I love about being an independent artist is that we can write about whatever we want, and do musical experiments without caring about how it will sell and whether it's the flavor of the month or not. We can do the music that is in our souls, regardless of its genre, or its popularity, or its niche market.

Unfortunately, the mass listening audience is pretty dumb, so the music industry has dumbed everything down to where morons can enjoy it. Morons spend money. Here at IMP, I assume you all to be automatically smarter just by the fact that you are a musician. When is the last time you heard a worthwhile solo in a modern song - one where you say, "Man, that person can really play that instrument!"

And, about instruments, if you gave Picasso crayons, he's still going to make a masterpiece. So, while you're right - a superior instrument makes a difference (I've been playing a student flute for forty years, and when I hear a good flute recording, I can hear the difference) I think the players and singers are more important. Now, I'm saying that in regard to Indie Music, because the players in modern music are almost irrelevant and interchangeable. Much of it sounds like just a guy with a keyboard, and it is devoid of any emotion.

Much of it sounds like just a guy with a keyboard

I'm just a guy with a keyboard, I'd play guitar too, but my left arm is minced after a car wreck,

I have played guitar on a lot of my songs in the past, but it's really quite a painful exercise, my arm gets sore just looking at a guitar.

So, I mainly play synth. and I'm not even very good at it. but along with most indie musicians, tunes play in my head, so I try and translate that to real sound as best as I'm able,

I don't know if I'd sound any better with an unlimited studio budget, and I don't have ten grand laying about to rent better equipment ha ha...

These are the kinds of excuses i figured would eventually show up on here, from those who make up excuses for their failures & hoping someone will like my sounds!
As far as instruments go, no one can put across a great guitar lead or keyboard lead with a cheap instrument, or create a good song, so you are way off base on that! No,,, the player doesn't make the song better, even if he is playing a cheap guitar or keyboard. Anyone who say's that me using an expensive Gibson Guitar. doesn't make my song Michelle great, is full of it! It's what I expect from the type of song producers here at the good enough site! If you want to hear a great guitar solo, just listen to my song My Sweet Guitar or Life's Weird. Over 50 years proves it's one of the best out there. Unless you are deaf, you will get a great guitar solo! People like you will get no where in music on the net, because you make up excuses for your poor musicianship. I was one of the guitarists featured on Fretnet in Australia under the name Ahedarexia where the best guitar players in the world are listed, http://www.fretnet.com/playlists_20031228.html
I know one thing for sure, it was a mistake to upload my music here, I should have just by passed it, because when I started listening to some of the stuff put up here, I knew I made a mistake, so I thought I'd put my professional input here, but it falls on deaf ears! Rock onnn losers, the record labels laugh at people like you & so do other indie artists who would hear the stuff here!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I still believe the the best musical talents rarely make the big time and that singers, songwriters and the like are a dime a dozen..

But curious, what do yall think of this guitar jockey???

Steve, thanks for the praise and acknowledgement, I really appreciate that.

Wes I'm not making excuses, I'm just saying why I don't/can't play much guitar.
Indie music isn't meant to be the same as constrained shackled major label fantasy land, it's about freedom and expression and experimentation, sharing and comparing, improving and improvising, doing the best you can with the resources available.
Surely that's why we make indie music.

Chris, this guy has no right to get on you like that. I have the utmost respect for you and everyone who works through a handicap or any chronic pain to create music. I once saw a guy with no arms playing guitar with his feet for the Pope, and it literally left me sobbing on the ground. Don't ever let arrogant, condescending people like Wes get you down.

Chris, it don't matter what Wes says. He's taking down all his tunes again. It he comes back I won't bother whit adding the tunes to my stations just to have him remove them again.

Chris, keep doing what you do. At least you don't quit this site wich is alot more than I can say about Wes.
