Before the trans-Atlantic trade, various indigenous African societies practised slavery. However, as detailed by the Canadian Museum for Human History, during the Atlantic and Trans-Saharan slave trades, distinct African kingdoms and states captured prisoners from rival ethnic groups and sold them to foreign traders
So before the UK Canada or the US had slaves from Africa this was a practice through much of the African continent by tribes who captured and tortured and enslaved other tribes people, and of course it still exists under a different name Depending on the exact context, the most common synonyms for "slave" include chattel, bond servant, bondsman, serf, thrall, captiva and vassal. If used in the figurative sense of gruelling labor, synonyms include drudge, toiler, or peon.
Now one could be a slave to their job, or feel that way, or one could be a slave to this western free market system. Perhaps we feel we are controlled or under domination by our current western government that taxes the crap out of us
nevertheless slavery is something that has been with mankind since the dawn of time
