Not everyone likes the mainstream
Not everyone likes the mainstream why because the mainstream has become this shallow thing. No this is the big thing no this is the big thing. It,s all a bit to corporate warfare. The big bucks make the big bucks type thing. No room for the small guy just trying his hand see whats happening. This is where places like IMP exist.

If the TPTB get there way places like this will be extinguished as not with the plan. Something to think about. Run by donations or no.

Some Scottish poetry.

Aye we were beaten soundly by no accounts
We had to bury our Claymores in the ground
Those of us who survived
So the English would not take them
As prizes of war
And sell them like trinkets on the market stall

Well, maybe if those of us who are indies that finally make it to the mainstream take the time to bring other indies along with them, soon, the mainstream will be filled with indies. Regardless to the big bucks and promo prowess of the mainstream corporate behemoths, Ultimately, it is the listening public who decides who deserves to be on the mainstream. The problem is that the mainstream decides who they choose from. indies must somehow learn how to make themselves visible to the masses. That's where the shit gets impossibly crazy and one sided against us. We must persevere and continue to struggle until there is light. If they won't let us in we should create our own mainstream.

Whoa, the Scottish poetry is morbid and sad,

I like the way Stoneman answered this question and framed it in a way to make us look at things differently, so help shape the future by being a trail blazer. There are some who started here, a handful who eventually became successful and stayed true to their roots, they may have not become mainstream, although they found their niche, and that is what we have to aspire to because we make our own destiny

Points to work at
learn the music business as well as knowing how the business of music works, that and be the best musician you can, stay within your area of expertise.

Develop the skills on how to promote yourself and find ways and means to reach out to those who are in your inner circle to assist. Lastly never give up, this is a long term commitment and eventually that one song will launch you to success
Make the messaging of your song meaningful ,cause it is all about the message not you as the artist , since people probably will remember the tune if it is catchy, melodic, simple and easy to sing along with. My dad always said this, if you can hum or whistle the song, then it will be something people will be drawn to, the general public, and maybe other musicians, whether it is instrumental or has lyrics and a nice melody, that is the key. make it simple, with a nice melody. Anyways, that is how I see it.

I'm so grateful that because I came to songwriting and recording late in life I already had a career so I could pursue my music for pleasure and sharing rather than a living (which I would never have made that way).

I have enormous respect for those able to devote their whole life and energy to making a living from music but I'm so glad I'm not one of them........I get such a buzz if just a few people appreciate my musical offerings and experience a thrill every time I manage to record something that I'm happy with in the studio.

I think the difference now is in the 90,s late 80,s i played in a band. Which would take upwards of 6 months to get right even then it was a bit dodgy till everyone got it. But when u did get it and could play live no better feeling. Everyone piling into the back of transit van full of gear. Trying to make yourself comfortable. I had a driving licence so i got the best seat but no booze. Or we would be arguing who was driving down but not up. It was always a big party

I have always thought to be a proper musician you need live experience. Loads of it, the more the better. Where,s the venues where your band and 20 of your pals would turn up all local. So wildly different now

Yeah, things have changed dramatically. I also remember traveling on the road with the band and all the equipment in tow behind us in an enclosed trailer. Some of those memories are fond ones and some not so fond. Being on tour can be very rigorous and taxing. I never liked i much with the exception of being on stage and seeing the crowd react yo my guitar solos. Such were the days of youth. My new label wants me to tour when they release the first album. Not sure if I can do that anymore. I'm old and tired and ornery. They want e to start in Japan (a place that I loathe) and then swing through the pacific rim. I may do it and and I may not. Nothing in my contract says I have to. But if the music hits I may have to suck it up and do the work. Geesh, work? I have been retired from my day jobs since 2003. The only work I do is in the studio and the martial arts gym. I never saw doing music as work until now, that I am old and tired. It wears on me now. Especially when I play horns and do a lot of singing. My wind is not what it use to be. But yeah, they are incorporated which technically makes them a corporation. However, they operate more like an indie. Not all corporation are bad. I worked for many of them in the Silicon Valley and I am thankful to have had that experience. It paved the way for me to finally be doing music full time. I think we have to be careful about who we demonize as they may be the one that gets us over the hump. I decided that I cannot have an us/them attitude if I want them to do the label work on my behalf. I have been with several labels and I have had ny share of sucky experiences. Probably many more to come. But I am determined to be relentless in my quest tp achieve my goals in music. I don; burn bridges. I keep trying to build them. When one fails, I start building another!

My brother runs a martial arts class he is 3rd Dan . I think i got green belt which is Celtic colours i was happy. But my brother studied off my uncle who is like buddah in karate terms. I would be lying if i knew how much Dan,s he has but it,s a lot.

Am more of the claymore's kilts and bagpipes type of guy. The old ways were the best ways everyone's obsessed with being tiktok stars. Using auto tune like it was going out of fashion. It got boring a long time ago. For me auto tune used correctly with a top singer can sound amazing.

Yeah, I hear you on the mumble rap bullshit. it just gets on my nerves because I never know what the fuck they are saying, That style is the worst ever started in my humble opinion. Also, I agree that auto tune used properly on a marginalized key challenged singer is amazing. But a tone pure singer don't need that shit at all.
