Remembering the end of the (teenage) affair

Words and music, guitars, keyboards, vocals: Brian Booth. Recorded on a Yamaha MD8

Piccadilly Square is the centre of Manchester (UK). If you live in Vancouver - you have the same average rainfall as Manchester does. There's a popular Manchester saying: if you can see the Pennine [hills], it's about to rain. If you can't see them, it's raining...

Piccadilly Rain

Words and music: Brian Booth, copyright 2003; based on a story by Colin Bates

Piccadilly rain
Comes from nowhere
Piccadilly rain
Doesn’t clear the air

And the statues
Bleeding white and grey
And the pavements
Shining green today

At the bus stop
Will you talk?
At the bus stop
Will you walk?

Why’s your friend here?
What is it you can’t say?
Why’s your friend here?
Why must it be this way?

Manchester goodbye
Sealed by the rain
Manchester goodbye
Please no, not again

Please speak to me
It can’t end here
Please speak to me
Not like this, not like this...

But you told me
Through your friend
Yes you told me
Here’s the end

And the rain cried for me
And the rain dried on me
And the rain washed my face
The rain left no trace

Stone cold heart
Or just an act?
Stone cold heart
Or a matter of fact?

Are those tears on your face
Or just the rain?
I don’t want it to be rain...

Manchester goodbye
Piccadilly rain...
Piccadilly rain...
Piccadilly rain...

Smile
Why should an essentially sad song make me smile? It is a smile of appreciation for what,in my humble opinion is a very intelligent song. I think Brian cleverly uses the sitar effects to evoke the atmosphere of his youth - St.Pepper and the whole spirit of an earlier era. Couple this with the rainy Manchester memories of a teenager facing what most us recognise and remember from our early romantic entanglements and there we have it. A wonderful example of English personal songwriting.

Songs with RAIN in the Title
"It's a long way to Piccadilly", but at least the rain has washed away some of the pigeon droppings that otherwise would have impeded the way of this meandering, emotional piece. -- J. Strell

Here as a link only. This Piccadilly is the centre of Manchester (UK), nothing to do with London; the city has a similar annual rainfall to Vancouver. Nerd alert: the guitar on this is a Rickenbacker which was once owned by the lead guitarist of Mansun. God alone knows where it is now; my friend (and lender) Colin sold it. Won't you sleep easier for knowing that factoid?
