Trust Me
It's proved a real b*gger, just picking one song from this lot. 'Rain, Rain...' nearly pipped it at the post, but the superb string arrangement and deceptively simple lyrics of this one came up from the back of the field and got it by a nose. But you have to listen to the songs in toto, I think, because the easy option for the casual listener is probably 'yeah yeah, fiddle-de-dee, ye olde folke clubbe stuff'; no, read the lyrics as you go. Music to break your heart to

Gilly Harrison
Drowning by Numbers
Ah, Gilly... I thought she'd gone from IAC, but it turns out she's merely gone and changed her name... I remembered how good her voice is, and the quality of her songs, but I had forgotten what a soddingly good guitarist she is. I recommend this as an entry-level introduction to her ouevre, but there's much more to her, especially when she's Fendered up

Funch
Improver
The sustained guitar notes absolve them from any criticism, and the amazingly restrained organ use provides another 'get out of jail free' card; so they're worth a listen, I'd say. (You'll know within 30 seconds whether they're your kind of music, so go on, go on, go on...)

Being of ye Gyrls of Convent Garden
No, really,I looked everywhere and couldn't find the bloke painted silver or the other chap, you know, all monochrome and calls himself a 'meem' (or at least would do,if he were allowed to speak). This is top-notch noise

Conversation Suicide
Broken Joke (LIVE)
Reminiscence alert... Ten seconds into this, and I was back in the late70s/early 80s, in a smoky beery pub or club, looking out from the stage to see whether someone's mum had remembered to press 'record' on the the crappy little cassette recorder whose batteries might not last, and praying that this time, we wouldn't be drowned out on tape by someone at a nearby table telling a tedious story about their pink half of the drainpipe. Joyous live music, thanks for this lads, may you gig long and prosper

Celebrate Your Love
There's absolutely nothing remarkable about the production of this song. Hurrah. A voice of this quality (ditto, melody and lyrics) does not need to be drowned in a sea of gloop. If Simon Cowell got his hands on this, the London Philharmonic Orchestra would be in there before you could say 'diabetes mellitus'

2 Chord Man
Imagine going on a really, really long car journey, and you've got that David Byrne in the back, continually asking 'are we there yet?' If you had this track on the audio system, you could threaten him with it, if he wouldn't shut up. I'm fuddled by this - it has nothing in common with most of the stuff I like, so why do I keep playing it? Should I seek professional help? Just please tell me I'm not trying to be hip in my old age

Stick with this one. About a minute from the end,it becomes something else; and that's all I'm saying for now. Thanks to 'alternative retroand psychedelic' (I'd be up all night working out the upper/lower cases) station for this one

Hugh Hamilton
Men of Religion
Hugh, another name I can cross off my (obviously very inaccurate) MIA list. Right: where do I start? Lyrics as good as I would expect, voice, harmonies and melody ditto. The ukulele: where did that come from? Hugh's material is not all like this, you should hear his acoustic work... and the rockier stuff. Classy, in a word. But most of all, if you feel part of IAC, perhaps you might take a moment to kneel down and give thanks that people like him exist, giving a leg-up to any poor beggar who dares to float their music on a site that contains so many apparently better (at least, in in their eyes) musicians

bitter
Fantastic stuff, but not one to listen to if you're on a bit of a downer, I'd say. Dissonance is a hard trick to pull off, but there's a textbook example of how to do it within this song. Thanks to 'Moody, Cool Psychotic and Mesmerising' station for this gem

Dry County Blues
Some years ago, we had a holiday in a lovely rural place in Arkansas, a few miles from Hot Springs. In a dry county... So that evening, we headed for the next county - but in the wrong direction, as I found trying to order a beer in the restaurant. Next day, we went the other way: 'BEER! LIQUOR! ONE MILE!'signs, leading us to a shack about four inches over the county line. Apart from being a really good song, this just took me back to that time, thanks muchly. And thank you, Folk Acoustic Americana station, for leading me to this

Po(t)pouri (sic) is another station where you'll not find a dud track. This instrumental track has some kind of Morrocan vibe going on, whilst suggesting influences from much further East, but it seems at the same time (OK, I know, it's doing my head in as well) to be almost pure Zingaro. If you like using the word 'eclectic', you're going to love this baby

I don't know when 'pop' became a term of dismissal, or why. This lovely piece of pop is just a pleasure to listen to; I bet on a stonking great club sound system, with enough bass to liquefy anyone standing too long by the speakers, it would go up a level. Thanks, Prime Cuts, another home of too much talent

Piccadilly Rain
Here as a link only. This Piccadilly is the centre of Manchester (UK), nothing to do with London; the city has a similar annual rainfall to Vancouver. Nerd alert: the guitar on this is a Rickenbacker which was once owned by the lead guitarist of Mansun. God alone knows where it is now; my friend (and lender) Colin sold it. Won't you sleep easier for knowing that factoid?
