A Better Place
This track immediately put me in mind of Miriam Makeba. Not just for the sound of the vocals, but for the uplifting and positive lyrics. The instrumentation is great and the only problem that I have with it is that it could stand to be about three times as long. Hopefully, the didgeridoo solo will happen, although it has a vibrant rhythm section that carries it quite well.

"Now"
This is a really deeply meditative piece of music, coupled with poetry read by the soothing voice of Cassandra Fink. On the subject of inspiration, this is both evocative and highly relaxing. Just lean back and breathe it in.

Blue
A relaxing, beautiful, peaceful excursion into the sky. The song blurb says that the lyrics were written from a dream, and the tune retains that dreamlike state. The guitar soloing is incredible, and in keeping with the feel of the song. An amazing example of the kind of material found all over this website. It makes me want to sit by the ocean and just listen to the waves.

It Hurts (Wilbert Roget, II, and Tom Carroll
"Cheeky musical number", indeed. Great lyrics, with a King George sound-alike that tells of the woes of being a totalitarian prez. It almost makes me sympathise- NAW! Really well done. Sort of brings to mind the old school Tom Lehrer (never mind Mark Russell). Had me laughing from the beginning right through to the end. I'll be checking this one out often. Btw, the other tunes on their page are just as scathing and professionally put together (in fact, it was a toss-up whether I'd add this one, or "Road to Utopia").

Bad Weather (Rain Mix)
Shaved Fish is a couple of former bandmates and longtime friends. Despite that, I still love this piece. The sound effects grab me right off the top. Follow that up with some dancing chord progressions and pulsing rhythms and I'm completely hooked. There is a lot of intricate interplay between the various sequences, never losing sight of the overall theme. With generous nods to Tangerine Dream, as well as their own personal stamp. These guys have been making great music for years.

The Man With No Band
21 Rifle Shots (short version)
This is an incredible example of the best of what music can do. I have a fondness for the use of soundbites, and the clips that Sam uses in this song act as powerful enhancements to the lyrics. For a relatively short song, it says so much and with an intensity that is palpable. Heartfelt and heartbreaking.

THE JACK PADDLE COVER BAND

This tune is difficult to adequately describe, which is probably one of the reasons I like it.
From the rolling piano line, to the Residents-sounding vocals and the odd extra instrumentation,
this is a song that grabs the attention and invites the listener along for the ride. I especially like
the little violin-pluck line that divides the verse about 2/3 of the way in.

This tune kind of reminds me of a sort of "Girl from Ipanema" for the Great White North. Maybe a "Girl from Saskatchewan". Part of the appeal is that I know a 'wonder woman' myself, and can relate to the tribute. The laid-back feel is exquisite and I particularly like the fact that the chord progression is included with the lyrics, in case one wants to play along. Unfortunately, I can't 'comp' chords too fast. I guess I'll just have to listen to it again, and again.

Another IAC 'act' with a spate of great tunes to choose from. Contemplative is the best word to describe this piece. I love the mix of instruments- from the nylon string guitar, to the digeridoo, tabla-sounding drums, etc. This meditative song has a very relaxed feel. "close your eyes and imagine sitting with us around the blazing campfire, under the Southern Cross!" I'm there, already.

I like the subdued nature of this tune. There's a lot of pent-up energy just under the surface, and it comes out in the solo and the lyrics. The vox are suitably low-key, while still keeping the pace- like holding the leash tight, on a pair of killer dobermans. Really good feel and words that are easy to identify with.

Shining Through
I have to admit that this was the first song I clicked on, on the Village Jammers page and I was immediately tapping my feet and listening to it multiple times. I've always considered bluegrass to be a sort of 'rural' version of jazz, focusing as much on musicianship as the song
itself. This song is a great, rollicking example of that. The lyrics about trying to walk the straight
and narrow despite that old debbil, the Devil, are entertaining and well-delivered. Btw, I've since
listened to the other tracks on their page and can say that they're all up to this standard. Great tunes and a lot of fun.

Bill Slater and Icarus Fell
Don't Wanna Be Edward D.
I saw this guy's posting of "Ode to Mary Ann", on the "New Release" list and (hoping it was about the Gilligan's Island femme- it was) gave it a listen. I was immediately struck by the humour and the musicianship. I'm glad I noticed it, because this is some incredibly imaginative and accomplished music. As a fan of Edward D, Wood (go figure), I had to post this song. Great blend of instrumentation and lyric savvy. Listen, enjoy, and share.

The CODE
Pay Attention!
From the opening bassline, this song grabs you and makes you 'pay attention'. A lot of raw energy in this track, from a very energetic band. Reminds me a little of what I felt, the first time I heard the Jam. This song has a serious groove to it, and a strong lyric. I like the laid-back vocal style that's still rough and insistent. The solo is ferocious.

spit me out (before I drown) - live on RSR1
Groovy- in the purest sense of the word. With a great, pulsing rhythm section, luscious vocals and very atmospheric guitar noodling. It's little wonder that Magnetfisch is one of the musical jewels of IAC. With nods to classic Simple Minds and the Cocteau Twins, a beautiful song.

This tune starts with a solid beat and verse rap for 'Momz', but the chorus vox are what really
sells it. Great funky street beats by SD, and excellent vocals by 2Mental and Jewelz. I've checked out a number of Slimdogs songs, and this one still stands out. Btw SD, where did you get the horn patches for "Kotton Klub"? They are outstanding.

As soon as I heard the intro, I knew I was going to like this one. Amazing blend of old-school blues and hip-hop. Solid blues playing and appropriately growly vox. Mosman brings in the street poetry right in the pocket. Nods to John Fogerty and street protests. Foot-stompin' and head-boppin', low-down dirty blues with a twist.

The Volvo Song
This lady made quite the stir when she appeared on IAC lately. This song serves as a great example why. Amazing lyrical humour and vocal prowess that makes me want to listen over and over. The Joni Mitchell and Alan Sherman (what a pair) references are completely accurate, but she puts a lot more into her material. One can only hope that she 'goes Prime', so that we can hear more.

The Shadow of Scamperance Couligran
I have to admit that I was drawn to this tune originally by the title. I was amply rewarded.
This is a "Wisconsin Jig" with a fair amount of old-school psychedelia. I love the mix of instrumentation- mandolin and synth (among others), as well as the tale of a woodland gnome who (by the illustration) looks remarkably like a guy I used to know. The song is a treat for the
ears, full of fun energy and lots of hip sounds.
