Priveledge-A WHITE NEIGHBORHOOD
Every morning at avout 7:00 am I start my 5 mile walk. It is always a very fast power walk and I usually go the same route. However, today old Stonewall (asshole #1) decided to go a different route than normal and wound up in an area I had never been to before. I thought what a cool neighborhood as I passed the neatly adorned houses. Anyway, as I walkeed I heard a car coming from behind but thought nohing of it until it slowed down and followed me at my walking pace. I turned and looked to see who was driving and saw a man (asshole #2) peering at me intently as I walked. Then, this actual conversation began.

Asshole #2: Excuse me? Uh, do you live around here?
Asshole #1: No, I live a few miles down the road. Why?
Asshole #2 Well, I was wondering what you are doing here.
Asshole #1 I am walking. Can't you see that? It's called excercize!
Asshole #2 Don't get angry dude! I have a right to ask you why you are here.
Asshole #1 And I have the right to walk anywhere I want to walk without explaining it to you!
Asshole #2 Oh, I see, well maybe I should call the police and let them ask you these questions
Asshole #1 You want me to call them for you? Leave e the fuck alone before you get dealt with!
Asshole #2 Oh, thats a threat! I'm calling them right now!
Asshole #1 Fuck you and the Goddam police man! I haven't done anything to anyone or broken any laws. Like I said. You want ,me to call the police for you. I know them and they have been seeing me out here walking every morning for over 40 years. So fuck you and you better leave me alone now!
Asshole #2 We'll see about this shit! He burns rubber as he drives off.

A few minutes later a police car pulls up behind me and the cop says:

Mr. Towery, good morning sir! I understand were having a problem out here this morning. I was told that you brandished a weapon and threatened a man. Do you mind if I give you a courtesy search? Then he got out of the car, searched me and told me to have a good day. This is the kind of shit that a decorated veteran gets from other citizens just because he is walking in their neighborhood? Plus he lied and said I had a weapon. Supposing that cop had not of known me? He could have shot me out of fear that I had a gun. Man, this shit has got to stop!

I'm afraid this sort of crap isn't going to stop any time soon, the racists have been deeply enabled by the Trump administration.

This is why those players take a knee at NFL games. Our justice system is already really askew and when these old white men are through it's going to be worse, for minorities and women. They just don't understand what America is supposed to be about.

Yeah, I know Scott. It is a desperate situation waiting to boil over into something really bad. I am going to make that my new route now. That asshole better leave me alone. I can be a much bigger asshole than him. He just doesn't know it yet. Next time I will be armed. With an ass whipping. Shit! I can't even walk down that damn street without being fucked with. Its not easy to live in a White world. I do it everyday and believe me it sucks! A couple of things that I learned while working the prisons.

1. The old dude and the youngest dude are the most dangerous. The old dude because he has seen and done it all before and his age makes people underestimate his old man strength. The young dude because he is reckless and may accidentally kill you.

2. Never back down to anyone. Ever!

Let me share a similar experience. On the Eastern border of Detroit is Grosse Pointe, very old money suburbs that the likes of Anna Dodge, Edsel Ford, ect called home. One day in my early 20's I was driving down Lakeshore Drive just to view the waterfront mansions along the lake and sure enough I get pulled over by the police though I wasn't breaking any laws. My paperwork was in order and I wasn't written a ticket and when asked why I was in the area I told him it was to look at all the various mansions. He then asked me. "Do you know why I pulled you over?" And being young and naive at the time I didn't know why. And he told me the reason. It was because of the condition of my car that he knew I wasn't from the area and he had make sure I wasn't casing people's homes, ect. He was nice about it and honest as well, but he told me it would probably happen again because I obviously looked out of place.

It's not fair and not right but the same rationale exists among neighborhood watch groups. If the people doing the watching see someone they don't know they may want to ask a few questions. I say keep walking that route if you want to, it is certainly your right. And once people get accustomed to you being in the area they'll get a lot friendlier, or at least most of them will. And if there are a few who still give you a hard time, get their plate# and report them to the police. You have the right to walk anywhere you want but people will still be wary at first towards anyone that they're not familiar with.

Is that supposed to be an excuse for them?

It's not an excuse, it's human nature. It doesn't matter what community you walk in, if the locals have never seen you before you will draw attention. And as unsightly a person as I am, I probably would have had the police called on me. It's the world we live in and community watchers are connected by IM these days and are trained to monitor people they are not familiar with. It's not right or fair but it's the way it is.

I used to get pulled over and harassed by police often because of my hair, the way I dressed, and my Grateful Dead stickers.

You see this is where the divide begins Larree. I don't think that I should have to look a certain way or be familiar to have the right to be left alone. Nor, should I have to walk a certain place several times before they accept my presence. As long as I am not breaking any laws, I should be allowed to walk anywhere without being questioned by anyone. I am all for neighborhood watch as I do that in my own neighborhood. But watch is all I do. I don't question or harass people just because they are different or unfamiliar to me. I certainly would never call the police on anyone unless I saw them committing a crime. What this asshole was implying was that my walking down his freaking street was a crime and that is bullshit. I call bullshit on that and any other lame excuse you can come up with for him and people like him. Bull Freaking Shit Man! I am not talking about right and wrong here. I am talking about the freaking law Larree. Why is it that when Black people are involved the law no longer applies? I am a citizen just like him and he has no extra rights over mine. He cannot interrogate me like he's a cop and he cannot demand that I leave his neighborhood. This is the crazy shit that got Trayvon Martin killed. All he was doing was walking down the street also. Neighborhood watch people have only the same powers as unarmed security guards. The right to observe and report. Sure, they can make a citizens arrest but can also be sued for false arrest.

So, you use to get pulled over and harassed because of your hair and Dead stickers. Consider this. The hair can be cut and the stickers covered but I cannot change the color of my skin. Not a good correlation with my plight bro. Not even close if you ask me. But I do admire your effort.

I agree 100%, Stoneman! I was just trying to say that I know how fucked it is for you because of the experiences I had when I was younger. I was harassed constantly just for doing... nothing!

Yeah, I understand what you are saying Larree. It is like having a target painted on your chest that people keep shooting at. But what gets me angrier than anything else is that these folks think we are supposed to just take that treatment without protest. If we speak up, march or kneel for the stupid anthem they get all upset and angry because we are disrespecting a piece of cloth. They hate us even if we have a peaceful protest. So, why should we be peaceful? What benefit does it give us? Were still hated. They expect us to be docile while our children are being murdered in the streets by thugs with badges, Were supposed to just shut the f up while they give these people paid vacations for killing us. Not going to happen. We will not stop until justice reigns for all people.
