In the midst of the heyday of punk, there was one band who, when you spun their vinyl, took you right into the middle of the vibe... and you could crash at their house as long as you liked. The unmistakable voices of Exene Cervenka and John Doe were always somewhere in the immediate vicinity of the night, twisting and intertwining, as X brought their punkabilly presence to every good party in town. Exene and John were married at the time, and their songs were point blank a punk documentary of their lives. X records never had a filler track, you would keep flipping the album over til eventually every song became a part of your world, a part of your scene. Crazed and urgent guitar by Billy Zoom on top of a churning beat brought forth by D.J. Bonebrake and bassist Doe kept driving and driving you (along with whoever you brought to the festivities) to stay up all night long. X will always be the punk band you think re: the city of Los Angeles, and Wild Gift was named Album of the Year by the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Rolling Stone, and Time Magazine in 1981. Still, this band never got their proper due in a music biz that was at the time dominated by AOR radio formats filled with endless Eagles and Fleetwood Mac. Their songwriting was a constant, the music timeless, and the mystical voices of a band called X will go on to radiate and captivate new listeners who have never been exposed to them.

X is one of my all time FAVORITES! nobody has gotten that melancholly vocal mix right like Exene & John Doe I hope y'all get it back together and ROCK for another 30 years!
