Recording my first official "solo" record?
Thinking about recording some tunes with just me and my acoustic. The first official Todd Leiter-Weintraub solo record?
Do you think that I'll be able to resist the urge to slap overdub upon overdub on the damn songs?

I think you've got the songwriting chops to pull it off. I love this kind of stripped down music, and wish there were more of it. Looking forward to hearing it!

Thanks for the encouragement Tom and Bryon.
I'm gonna set a goal of completing it by this time next year! I need to write (complete the writing of) a couple more songs, too.
It'll be a challenge, but I think that it can be done.

Oh, it can be done. Some people are afraid to expose themselves and their songs in that naked of a light. I have three albums released. All with just me a guitar and some harmonica. I love hearing a songwriter delivering his creation as it came from the womb. So do it brother.
If I don't get songs out they start piling up...Look forward to what you do...

Started making my first legitimate attempt at writing a new song in a long time. I knew this "goal" thing would kick me in the ass!
Now it's time to get real lyrics written.

I've got several up on my page in raw form and felt very self conscious as they're so raw and unfinished (one's recorded in the bathroom ha ha) but some people love those raw versions!
I look forward to hearing something acoustic like that from you!

'Come on...lets go'
would sound GREAT as Acoustic & Voice only Todd!
I'm thinking along similar 'uncluttered' lines for some new songs
as well, so get stuck in and make it happen!
Good Luck!

So, I actually have somebody queued up to record this thing.
Just have to set a date for the first recording sessions, and then we'll see how this thing takes shape.
Hopefully, I will be able to meet the set release date that I set of Spring, 2012.
Going through the list of songs right now, and I will be evaluating them all, considering arrangements and whatnot.
Still thinking that it will be solo/acoustic. But that does not mean that I will not be doing some sort of electronic tweaking. I like throwing curveballs.

Todd,
Everything I record starts off as a full acoustic tune. The stuff you hear on IAC is the result of broadened ideas in my head as the process goes along when I get to my studio.
When I go out to do a short gig, party, or open mic night, I play my original songs the way I drew them up and practiced them for weeks in the development stages. Shit, some of them sound better as an acoustic live version anyways. At least I know I can later do a "best of" or "Live" CD in the future. I've adapted this way of doing things because it's really hard to find good musicians to play someones original material. I found that playing all of my own instruments, I can get what I want, and how I want it. Plus it's far more economical in the long run.
It's good that you're taking your time on this project. Making sure everything is how you want it is key. I'll be looking forward to listening to what transpires.
Good Luck,
D.

Oh yeah, vocal and rhythm guitar alone is a completely satisfying sound. Lots of people prefer it to anything else - as Chandra said, the raw sound .... I'm hoping a tune with packed with major seventh chords comes to you, love them. Good luck and have fun!

So, this is becoming a bit more involved (are you surprised?); it's going to be a double EP.
I'm still going to record the songs solo and acoustic. And I am going to release those songs as an EP called "Well-Enough Alone". But then, I am going to take the same takes of those same songs, and remix/produce them a bit more... add some of my weirdness to them, and release THOSE as a second EP called "Can't Leave Well-Enough Alone".
They'll be available for purchase either together or separately.
Maybe I'll tack on some bonus stuff as an incentive for getting them both. Who knows?
Anyway, recording is going to start in a couple of weeks. Just nailing down the start date for sure. "Well-Enough Alone" shouldn't take long at all, being what it is. I'll let you know.
Love,
Todd

Start date is Saturday 5/28.
Recording with Andrew Horton from Chicago synth-pop band FM Towns at his home studio.
Right now, I'm planning on doing 7 songs. Hopefully I'll rattle off all 7 on that first day and finish off the basic tracking for Well Enough Alone right then and there!

Recording begins Saturday!
Hoping to begin AND end the purely-acoustic release on that day!
In the queue:
"The Key"
"A Perfect Girl, A Perfect Tune"
"New Year's Eve"
"Come Around Again"
"Every Kane"
"Past Tense"
"Whiskey"
and possibly:
"All About the Feeling"
"That's Okay"
"Revisionist"
"Never Wrong"
and, a couple of covers -- "Dark End of the Street" and "Ju Ju Man"
Who knows? I usually play these things by ear (in more ways than one).

First session: very productive! Andrew is great to work with, and we got just about all the tracking done. Would have gotten ALL of it done, had I not screwed up the guitar part on "New Year's Eve." Damn.
So that leaves just a little bit of tracking left, and the mixing. Maybe track minimal backing vocals. Realistically, we can wrap up Well-Enough Alone at the next session. And then, it'll be on to Can't Leave Well-Enough Alone.

Finally have another session re-scheduled for THIS Sunday.
Of course, I am supposed to take my son out for his birthday to an amusement park on Saturday. And, of course, it's supposed to rain. So, of course, I may have to move THAT to Sunday.
So... hopefully, Andrew can do Saturday, so we can flip-flop the days. If not, it may have to wait EVEN DAMN LONGER.
God, this is frustrating.
Having trouble getting the rough mixes from the original sessions, too.
Damn.
Really want to get this moving.

So, session went well.
Now I am listening back to the roughs and I am thinking that maybe a couple of things need to be re-done.
Of course you are always your own worst critic, but I don't want to be listening to the release once it is out to the world and all that I can hear are the things that I want to change. I've been down that road too many times already.
Still, really happy with the way things are going so far; and I'm enjoying working with the guy that I am working with.
Looking forward to sharing with you all once it's all done.

I'm looking forward to hearing what you've been up to. I agree about fixing things before they're set in stone. Too many times I've let something go and it just seems worse and worse over time. Get it as good as you can the first time so you don't have regrets later. Good luck Todd.

After a couple of stops and starts due to personal issues (both mine and others), I am getting back into the studio THIS WEEKEND!
Armed with one more new song, too. We'll see how this goes.
Gonna be with my old friend John Swamy, with whom I recorded 2 tracks for Chicken on a Bicycle:
"Sheila of the Worms"
and
"Tortured Artist"
So, let's see if I can finish this damn thing up.

Had the session and it went great. John is a genius. I'm not, though, so I'm gonna have to see if these takes grow on me or if I'm gonna take another pass. I'll wait until I get the final mixes from John.
I wonder if I'll ever be satisfied with something that I do.

Todd,
If there are little things you're unsure about, they'll just become bigger and bigger as time goes by. Then, a year from now, you'll wonder why you didn't fix those things in the first place. Take the time to get it right. You're a really great songwriter, and your songs deserve the best treatment you can give them.

Mixes are almost there. I have one more harmony that I am going to try to record and then it should be all ready for mastering.
First listens, I am not so sure that I should even release it. But then, the more I listen, the more that I like it. The songs are good (IMO) and this is basically what I sound like when I play shows -- just me and my guitar.

Thanks, Tom and Chandra!
I ended up with 9 tunes (+1 bonus track if you purchase the physical CD), clocking in at about 24:00.
Performances are ragged, to be generous. More demo-quality than anything. But the sound quality is good. And the companion album should (hopefully) appear within the year. See what I can do!
Hope that you like it when you hear it.
