I bought a resonator guitar yesterday!
It's just a cheapie, but it'll be nice to play with something so different-sounding. Maybe it'll spark my songwriting fire again.
It's a Regal, single-cone resonator. Nice bass response and a lovely neck that plays real nice. I'm thinking that it'll sound nice when I go into the studio to record something like "C'mon Angel".

We certainly hope it sparks your songwriting again Todd but maybe also try a couple of sticks of dynamite. Go to my new 'Ranters and Purgers' thread and scream, that might help too.

Cool guitar - I've been meaning to get one.
Do you plan on using an open tuning or using a slide?

May experiment with open tunings, but I am a LOUSY slide player.

Okay, so I DID pick up a slide last night. I wasn't as lousy as I expected to be; maybe I'll mess around with one a little more.

You did get a slide?
Ok I HAVE to know - brass, glass or chrome?
Just remember to MUTE the strings behind the slide - on the tuning peg/nut side. Otherwise is sounds cheesy.
If you need any help - let me know.

I've had a slide for 20 years. I've just never used it -- too frustrating.
It's chrome. And I've always been muting the strings in FRONT of the slide; knew there was something wrong with that. Physics 101, eh?
And yeah, my bro-in-law is an amazing slide player; he's mastered all of Sonny Landreth's licks and even cops his tone. Bastard.
Actually that's him playing Dobro on "False Start" at our page. He's not as fluid on the Dobro, but good enough!
;-)
And thanks for the offer.

Ahhh chrome. I use chrome all the time. Brass is too muddy sounding for my taste. And glass doesn't seem to ring the strings like chrome does.
Sonny is a great slide player. He rocked it up at the Crossroads fest. I can do what he does - but I have other obligations at the moment. But my day is coming soon.
I mute behind the slide - on the nut side. You can roll how you roll - thats how I roll.

So I dug on a couple of new slide licks this weekend. Still not great, but expanding my pallate, at least. And yeah, it's still in the standard tuning. I may go to open E or open G sometime this week and open things up a bit.
What I really aspire to is George Harrison-style lyricism with the slide, as opposed to a bluesy thing. But, you know, I like Rev. Gary Davis, too.

Just wrote my first song on this bad boy. Kinda They Might Be Giants meets White Stripes (country version).
Now I gotta get it recorded.
