You who have autoplay enabled...
I, for one, find it very intrusive and aggravating when I get to a page and SMACK!!!!! my eardrums get shattered by an unexpected blast of music.
Usually I navigate away from the page immediately and don't come back. You actually loose a listener in me, at least, by doing this.
What is the thought behind having the player start up automatically on folks like that?
Anyone else hate the autoplay feature like I do?
Let's talk about this.
Please keep it civil; it's not politics, folks!

I must admit, I agree with you Todd. It is especially annoying when I am already listening to another song or station and am visiting a page to make a comment and blam!!!

Hear hear - imo autoplay sucks!
I'm usually listening to something else too, so for me it's "quick, turn it off!"

I know it annoys new listeners ---they can't figure how to turn it off!! my wife even!!
but ewe hardened musos??
it works for me----- cos we export our players outside IAC on to various sites
if they won't come here we must go to them??

Sorry autoplayers, but I bolt almost instantly upon being bombarded by your player...I'm usually listening to something else, and the dual player experience is most disrupting and I'm usually moving fast so it's only on a rare occasion that I'll search for the thing and turn it off and linger...
On the other hand...once upon a time I had an empty myspace player (in favor of the IAC player which I imported to my myspace page) and I wanted people to be sure to know there was a player so I had it on autoplay...nobody ever complained, but maybe that's because anybody who would complain just bolted...doh!
P.S. Why do I want the title of this blog to be "You who philosophize..."???

I don't really care for it on personal pages- I like to pick which songs I want to listen to.
However, I use it on my stations (usually), because it saves having a listener hit the "Stream All".
I am NOT bi-polar! Yes I am!

I have players with auto play on several sites that start up automatically from IAC. But as far as my home page here, I'd rather people pick and chooze what they want to hear. Hell, if they're on my page to start with, I'm happy!
I don't want to be "force-fed" tunes if I visit other peoples pages. I usually turn off thier player and randomly pick a few tunes.

I agree it's annoying on station pages because I usually pick and choose songs I want to hear sometimes from the bottom up, but we do have an export player on our home website and people seem to like it but I wish the 'off' switch was more visible because only IAC'ers would know where to find it and it's tiny!

Well, I've been naughty on that account on the PHLEGM page, but that's 'cause I WANT people to leave it immediately, and hopefully go to CONVERSATION SUICIDE page.... Since I made the error of putting IN HIS HEAD up there first...
Anyhoo.... I don't do that on the CONVERSATION SUICIDE, I just hope that those that stop by DO choose to give a listen, and find either the HARD or softer, more viscous side, of PHLEGM....
urrrrrr... that didn't sound very appetising, did it? DOH!
SO FAR looks like the consensus is __DON'T use AUTOPLAY, if ya want 'em to come back to your IAC PAGE, but DO use it on MYSPACE --- "IF YOUR RUNNIN' a stream of your IAC tunes or an IAC Internet Radio station".
RIGHT?

Yep that seems to be what the concensus is!!!
HOWEVER!!! I think it is more threatening when the music blasts out---?
-if it's something softer,----------- maybe less threatening
One thing I like about auto play is ----we can put our latest song on the top and folks get to hear it-------whether they want to or not!!!
heh hehe

Rob,
I hear what you are saying and I used to use autoplay (ducks from incoming rocks!!) with the same reasoning.
However, I got a number of complaints about it and then started to realise from visiting others with autoplay just how annoying it can be.
The outcome is usually that LESS people hear your songs because they usually leave your page. Those that do stay will turn off the player and pick which songs they want to hear.
Another reason I stopped embedding players on my IAC pages and on my website is that the player is then only available while the page is open. As soon as the page is navigated away from, the player stops.
What I now do on my non IAC pages (ie, my website and other sites) is to put a button on them which opens up the player in a popup window so the main site can be navigated while the player continues.

hmmmmm.... popup window. I like that! How do ya do that? It's not in the "streaming from IAC" code they provide as HTML....

Plegm,
Pop-up window code only works on some sites. You need to be able to edit the HTML code of the page you want to include it on. Having said that, here's an example from my new Project Jedi site:
The following code goes in the 'header' section of the HTML (ie, the first part of the page code):
<script type="text/javascript"> function openwindow() { window.open("http://iacmusic.com/play2.aspx?songID=1006283&source=Project%20Jedi%20Radio%20Station%206283%20Stream%20All","my_new_window","toolbar=no, location=no, directories=no, status=no, menubar=no, scrollbars=no, resizable=no, copyhistory=no, width=520, height=290") } </script>
The http address after the window.open(" part is the address of the player you want to use. I got it using Firefox to open the stream all player on my station page (works with artist pages too) and copying the code in the player address window.
The next code is placed in the body of the HTML page where you want the pop-up button to appear:
<form> <div align="center"> <input type="button" value="Open Project Jedi Radio" onclick="openwindow()"> </div> </form>
The value="Open Project Jedi Radio" part determines what text appears in the button.
You can see this code in operation on my Project Jedi site.

The http URL above looks like it is only the first line (ie, http://iacmusic.com/play2.aspx?songID=1006283&) but it is actually everything within the "" (ie, http://iacmusic.com/play2.aspx?songID=1006283&source=Project%20Jedi%20Radio%20Station%206283%20Stream%20All)
For some reason, it came out in the above example as two lines..
Oh, one more thing, the url in the pop-up player on IAC pages does NOT show up in some browsers (including Internet Explorer and Firefox 2). It DOES show up in Firefox 3 though.

I choose autoplay or not in different circumstances. I have added a player to my IAC page, not point in that. But I do have the player on my myspace set to auto play. Also the embedded player on my own website homepage is set to auto play. (I think)
Ironically as I have no flash player on my main web browser, I can never automatically hear music on nay page! Perhaps if I did I might change my approach.
You do need to grab somebodies attention though as visits to sites can be so fleeting....
What I would never do is something I saw on a friend myspace page recently. One of her friends had embedded their own player in a comment and set it to auto play, drowning out her music with their own! Never seen anyone do that here thankfully.

I've got an alternate approach to a popup player that you can use on any site even those that don't allow scripting. As long as you can add a link with a target attribute. It does require your own fully editable website though. You can use this on myspace. (or for that matter IAC but they already provide a pop player here by default)
First create a webpage on your site called forinstance player.html
The add the iac player code to it.
The an this link code to your page
<a href="http://your.web.site.com" target="_new" >click here for popup player</a>
For example the one I use on myspace looks like this:
popup
I add this snippet of script in the <head> of the page to resize the window after it's open but it doesn't seem to work in all browsers.
<script>
top.innerWidth = 560;
top.innerHeight = 320;
</script>
P.S. Had to read the source of the page to work out titania had got round the prohibition on the word script Well done! Wouldn't the world be so much easier if people didn't abuse powerful features like ripting to wreck sites and spread virii!

I agree with you about adding an autoplay player to a comment on someone else's site!!! That is rooood!!
Phlegm,
