When an artist has a mountain of music at their IAC page...
Do you find it fun to peruse?
Or do you find it too daunting to try to plow through it all to find songs that you may like?
I think that I am of the latter camp. But I admittedly have attention difficulties. Still, I try because I know there is a lot of great stuff out there.
So... tell me.

From a listener perspective I figure the more the better...I think you're right (from other blog) about the DMD thing though. Maybe put a few representative tunes up on your artist page from each CD or "group" but make them available as a DMD. Seems reasonable.

This is a good question. I think it doesn't hurt to have as many songs on a page as an artist deems necessary to show his or her stuff. Sure it's daunting to see 25 or more songs on a page but I think if listeners like what they hear after the first few tunes they'll come back another time and listen to more. I've had songs added to stations recently that have been on my site for months but have just been discovered by station managers who I know have heard many of my songs already. No one listens to EVERY song on a page in one sitting but people do come back. I've also had songs I considered deleting because of low stats but some of those songs have surprised me over time and moved up and even if they didn't I know that there are folks who dig those songs, so why take them off? It's nice to have a substantial body of work to show the world. If some people have attention deficit disorder, that's not my problem.
(It doesn't hurt to be selective as to which songs to post. Just throwing every song you ever wrote up on your page can definitely discourage listeners from coming back for more. I try to stress quality over quantity, but that's just my opinion)
Some artists always put their latest song first on their playlist. I prefer not to do that but sometimes I'll put NEW SONG and the date I added it in the song deion)

I put the most important or most recent songs at the top that I want people to hear, and may rotate that from time to time...but I don't like to take songs down...and if they are added to stations and the song gets taken down that's a shame...

There are advantages in only having 2 songs from a charting point of view----if you doubt this just check out satros PopiKok site----- 2 great songs both in top 20 all genres-----
However if you are a group of songwriters (we are !)-----our music covers many genres and styles and this IS our strength----
what we have put up is just the tip of the iceburg----we have over 300 tunes in our library---plus we are recording new material-----I change our top song every few weeks----usually new tracks go to #2 spot!

I tend to do that too, put my newest song in the number two slot, and I leave my successful, chartwise and station add wise, song in the number 1 slot, but I wouldn't take a song down unless I'd run out of space....

I can see where having a few A-List songs could be of benefit, however every song on my page has been picked up by a station so to follow Larees post, I do not want to delete songs and have them dissappear, It means alot to me when someone picks up a song.
I try to have quality tunes on my page, but its only natural to have a few "Wild Honey pies" in the catalog.
Its always interesting to see what songs are picked up, often times they are ones that you think are not the best :) am proud of each one in their own way, and as such they have a home for better or worse.
Hey Richard, get your Head off of Rockabilly Elvis's body Bro, you are freaking me out :)

I actually dont like when I go to a page and there's a bazillion songs..
But, I think I have half a bazillion on my page, and it's because I cant decide what to put up, and I'm of two minds because I have my former bands material and then I have my solo material.....and I'm self conscious I think about my solo material but I think my old band was pretty good so I hope that maybe my solo stuff will achieve some sort of credibility by association...maybe?
really, when I go to your page I'm only gonna listen to 1 or 2 songs, even if you're great!
I'm busy as hell and picky as hell, I think I've only streamed the entire page of a few artists here.
I say put your best 3 right at the top, the really kick ass stuff , and then put new stuff, unless your new stuff IS your best stuff in which case go back to the beginning of this sentence..
Of course, I probably haven't done that myself, but I should...
maybe I better go check.

hmmm... good points raised here.... we've currently got 37 tunes up! Definitely try to keep the BEST (from fans, friends, reviews & hits/charting) in the top 5-10 -- but occasionally move them around for variety.
But I'm sure SOME are turned off by having to plow through so many to find a gem of a tune.
Obviously, I'm hopin' most folks that actually check out our music, WILL check out more than a few, and be suprised by the diversity and musianship that is Conversation SUicide. But realistically, most folks only look at a few, probably by word of mouth, etc.
Of course, I'm a little crazier than most, and put up over 6 live tunes, believing that people will actually care enough to LISTEN to RAW LIVE material, BEFORE it's been studio recorded...
The artists I LOVE ON iac, i TEND to listen to more than the first 3-5, to find out what I REALLY dig! -pHLeGm
-My two cents...

If someone picks it up for a station, I don't feel good about cutting it. Someone wants it up.

Too daunting. I think it should be a cut to the chase, show me what I can expect from you in four or five songs kinda deal. Like an ep sampler. I've plowed through 40 songs before, but only because I said I would, and it took forever.

This is where I park my tunage, just because there are thirty songs does not mean you need to listen to all, pick one...pick the first, second third...does not matter to me. If you like what you hear, listen to another if you so desire...If you don't?? Thanks for stopping by :)

40 songs on a page? DOH!
Guilty as charged.
But how else am I gonna show the diversity that is pHLeGm?

Big friggin' deal, so some people (like myself) want to share every recording we have created. I have so few opporunities to record, that the 30 songs I used to have on my page (only have 3 now, not by choice), represent 10 years of recording.
Where else am I going to post? If I can't give away tunes from a selection of 30, why would it be easier to give away 3? After all, it's not like my style of writing is vastly popular, hell, the only audience I really get is online. In my opinion, the more the better. Especially when an artist writes in multiple, and blended genres. I think we all need to find less things to criticize, and that may give us more time to sample the great music online. Just a thought.

The thing occasionally puts me off, is an artist with only one song.....
If i find someone I like I'm going to liste there and then, I may not get back, so more the merrier, us long as the standard is consistant.

A mountain would be like the equivalent of 5 - 6 albums worth or over 50-60 songs or more
Most artists have maybe 10-20 maybe a minority at 25-30. that would not be a mountain of songs maybe a landscape or a prairie of songs
I have listened to many artists for maybe an hour and that is perhaps 15 songs worth
and honestly how can you properly assess their tunage if you dont review and digest what they have and what they are capable of
