Autoplay: Good marketing, or just-plain annoying?
So, I just reset my page to automatically pull up the IAC player and start playng my tunes whenever anybody comes to the Hop On Pop page. Now, when you come to a page like that, do you stop and listen or scramble to find the "STOP" button and then never come to the page again?
Is it good to get the music in their ears or does it just piss you off enough that you never want to go there again?
I want to know because I want to be heard, but I want to CONTINUE to be heard, too.
Thanks!

Good question - personally, I don't like automatic plays, but I've learned to keep my volume off. Sometimes the music comes out louder than expected, when I just want to read about the artist. So at first it was annoying and I'd scramble for the off player, and if it took to long to figure out I would just would leave.
I've noticed some people even have videos automatically playing so sometimes there's 4 things going on - this really urks me. But again - speakers off and when I'm ready to listen I'll listen
my 2 cents

I have wondered that myself. I have imported the AIC player to my myspace.com site and have had the auto play on for awhile. As an experiment, I've turned it off to see if it makes a difference. But that is the only player that I use. I've been to other sites that have several things that start playing and that is really annoying. As long as there is only one thing that starts going I'll usually give it a quick listen. And yes, the volume is close at hand if it comes on too loud. If the site is interesting and/or it seems like the type of music that I would be interested in I'll hit the play button anyway.

I have a couple IAC buddies I was visiting almost daily and I switched to every week or two because of automatic players. I dislike them, especially on artist pages, and it does tend to make me visit less frequently, even if I really really like you!
I use the IAC export player for my spazspace page, and I have that start up automatically, only because I figure people might not see it and thus wouldn't realize there was any music on the page. Nobody has complained about it...yet...

Well, because of the feedback here (and very quick feedback it was), I have changed the player on our page to no longer "autoplay". But the player is still there for easy access.
I agree that the auto play thing kinda annoys me, as well. But wanted to see if it added up to more plays and more listeners. Most-likely it just added up to more 3-second plays!!!
Anyway, thanks for your feedback folks. And feel free to keep commenting.

I think it works fine and serves it's purpose..What you're all forgetting is we know how to negotiate the site..I had people telling me they couldn't see where to turn it on..If someone isn't smart enough to turn it on I'll help them..BUT..If they are not smart enough to turn it off or leave because I have it on auto...fine..The only time it annoys me is when I don't like the music...then I won't stay anyway....so at least they got a partial play...and I didn't have to waste time starting it...lol

-----in summary, it can be annoying, but over time, it probably helps the stats?
that's a question for Scott or Toby!
