Hey Todd ... always enjoy this thread ... looking forward to another year of ear candy ... There are a couple here that are definitely new to me and I'm going to check them out .... Ashtray Boy and Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson ....
What I find amazing is not only your large catalog of music ... but that you can remember the names of the Artist ...
I am TERRIBLE with names ... constantly trying to remember who did what .... I can remember a lyric ... I can remember a symbol crash at 5:03 ... I can remember a four part chorus harmony ... but I can NEVER remember the names of the Artist !

Just a part of the love, Sam.
Oh, and I just edited my queue... check out the Tom Zé. So bizarre and wonderful, I think that you would love it... earthy, psychedelic, and post modern all at the same time. A little something for everyone! ;-)

P.S. I caught some "best of Johnny Cash show" on TV recently. Is there a CD by that name? I may just have to google that. We were having a hard time telling if a few folks were playing to pre-recorded backing tracks. I was impressed and left hungering for more...

There are a lot of cover tunes on there. It is early on, after all.
I rate it pretty well. It's a good record of what a great live ROCK band they were before they retreated to the studio to change popular music as we know it. Plus, it has all those silly little spoken pieces and interviews.
A solid 5/5.
Today, I didn't bring anything in so I'm just listening to IAC, my iTunes, and trying to watch the Inauguration.

The Band - I definitely drew a lot of inspiration from them in the last year. I am so friggin' jealous of their recording situation. I agree with you Steve.
That soundtrack has become one of my favorite albums of all-time. I'm poised to dig deeper into the whole rocksteady thing, but only have a little bit of a clue as to where to begin. I want to get some Desmond Dekker, for sure. I already have some Toots. But where else to go? Scotty? I love his song on the soundtrack, but what else has he done that's that good? Anything?
time to hit AllMusic.
It's my go-to musical reference.

Man, Todd, I don't know how you find the time or the ears for all this, but recently you've been listening to two of my favorites, so i just had to stop and mention it.
The Everly Bros. I was a very little boy with two older brothers and I grew up listening to, and mimicing them. They are still the greatest harmony duo ever.
And Emit Rhodes...I remember him from when he almost made it big. McCartney-esque with a dreamy quaity to his sngs and his voice.
Thanks for reminding me -

Well we were a playing band back then and always looking for musicians that fit our sound. Emit was a natural for us.
And the Everyly's...God, who did they NOT spawn! So underrated in the pantheon of modern music, so influential. When I was seven years old my Grandfather made me a cigar box guitar and I would sing along with their albums. Fifty years later and I still know all the songs!

I just picked up on the bit in the thread about Emmit Rhodes. His first album was amazing! He was one of the first 'one man bands'. His father had set him up with a multi-track recording studio at home, as I recall, and he played all of the instruments and wrote some terrific tunes. One of his signature sounds was an old pump organ. He was an inspiration to me and is, when I look back, one of my major influences and has been listed as such on my myspace page since I put it up.
I looked for 15 years for a copy of that album (mine had been stolen) and finally got it when it went to CD. I must have searched thru 200 used record stores for it.
He did another album with the London Symphony that kind of sucked, as I recall.
I'm really impressed with the amound of things that you're listening to. I envy you the time but really appreciate you sharing it with us. It gets me listening to things that I've never tried before.

The Point - great Nilsson tunes, cute animation. Have you seen The Point. Narrated by Ringo, (I think he should be Sir Ringo!) nice piece. I watched it quite recently. And any form of Abbey Road is great.

I watched it recently (for the first time) with the wife and kids -- as a "family movie night". everyone loved it!
Also, I was recently very amused that the play that my son just starred in (Tales Of a Fourth-Grade nothing, see related post) used "The Puppy Song" as a part of their soundtrack. Inspired.

Todd,
I was just cruisin' thru your year so far, noticed a couple of my favs....T Monk, God, he was something!
Sly and the Family Stone, didn't make to many concert dates, but they could cook!
And Stevie Wonder....I still thing his greatest is "Songs in the Key of Life". An incredible double album.
You ever listen listen to any Young Rascals? Many great hits from the late sixties.
Ciao, Kurt

Barbara Streisand -- YES -- THANK you --- most heterosexual men are afraid to admit that she has a fuckin' amazing & unique (yet sultry) voice, for fear they'll be put in the GAY arena.... NICE to see your DIVERSITY shows no bounds...
TINY TIM too? oh man, we have GOT to collaborate on that tune of J. P. Sharpe's -- fuck. I wish I wasn't so damn busy, with no recording equipment of any value. Let's keep in touch.... I eventually plan to hit the studio with some of my NEW tunes AND a collaboration with Jesse Adams (only a seed of thought at the moment), DirgeK (Jill is workin' with me on possible songs by sending mp3s) AND I REALLY wanna do a cover of an IAC Artist like J. P. Sharpe or some other collab with YOU, my good man. Thanks for the PLAYLIST by the way.... I'll be uploading it this week.
Keep those music tastes as refined as they are at the moment.

Glad to see you like RANCID, Todd.
What about they're oh-so-important predecessors - TIM's first major project of merit - Op Ivy - as they are known by their fans.
Operation Ivy for the record.
Have you ever dug on the badass SKA-punk/Reggae sounds of Tim Armstrong's early years?
THEY Phreakin' ROCK!
His LOVE for Joe Strummer & The Clash mixed with some GOOD Skankin' are most evident in his Operation Ivy project he did with a few others...
Some REALLY great catchy tunes, too. Just curious if they've made it to your playlist yet.

Oh yeah, I've been listening to Op Ivy since the early 90's; an old girlfriend turned me on to them. Only one album, but WHAT AN ALBUM!!!
And that ska/reggae stuff that Tim did, that's from his NEW album -- just came out last year. Yes, it's on my playlists and I bought the album a couple of weeks ago. It's magnificent. You can hear the Toots & the Maytalls, Desmond Dekker, and other Rocksteady influences loud and clear! (And those are a couple of my favorites evah!)
I saw Rancid a few years ago (oh, man... 10 years ago?!?!), and they were amazing. If you get the chance, go see 'em. I think they are still doing their thing.
By the way, Lars has a solo album out, too. And he is also on IAC!
