HOP ON POP versus XTC?!?!
Am I freaking NUTS?!?!
Yeah. Probably.
But I do think that this is my best song (so far) and I wanna see how y'all feel it holds up next to a song from one of my all-time favorite bands.
Now this is a REAL challenge (for me):
Hop On Pop - "Ashes On the Water"
versus
XTC - "Spiral"
Feel free to be brutally honest with me. If I were not ready to take some shots, I would not have attempted this. But, if you really like my tune more than XTC... um... or something... Let me know what about it you liked.
Now, I would like to see some of you put yourselves up against some of the more-established (ie - famous) bands here at IAC. See how the community feels that you stack up against some of the greatest artists of all-time.
For now... lay it on me.

NOW THAT is a fuckin' BRAVE thread starter.
TODD, I LOVE Ashes on the Water, but XTC Spiral has SUCH a nostalgic feel, to early XTC, that I HAVE to choose one of my favorite bands of all time.
XTC wins hands down.
Are you sure this is a good idea?
Any of the SUCCESSFUL Indies played on PHAMOUS PHLEGM PHAVOURITES would absolutely KILL me in a rock off.
That's why they're FAMOUS, and I'm NOT YET, you know.
Anyhoo.... good on you, for bravery points, on a scale of 1 to 10 17.

"Are you sure this is a good idea?"
Of course it is.
If I want to be considered in the same company as my favorites, somebody has to put me in their company. So, if I don't put me there, who will?
I, personally, do think that "Ashes..." stands up to "Spiral" very well, if I can sound like a bit of an egoist, for a moment. It's a damn good song, and a bit XTC-like in its own way. They were a big influence (rapid-fire wordplay, in particular) and I am still learning a lot from them.
The bottom line is (taking absolutely nothing away from XTC):
It takes more than talent to make one famous.
If that were all it took, then a lot of us would already be there.
When it comes down to it, they're just a damn good band. Like any other damn good band. Better than most, harder-working than most. And, also, luckier than most.
(EDIT: And I would put other folks' songs up against XTC or any other "famous" person on here, too. There are many others that would hold their own, too, IMO.)

My take .....
Both good songs .... I have to give "Spiral" the edge .... Now have XTC and their resources do "Ashes On The Water" and I might like it better ...
My point is this .... As I've said before Todd, I love your stuff ... and your vox ... and that's why I lose my head wondering why you don't showcase it more ... To me your vox is always blending in, or getting covered up in the mix ...
Just to make sure it isn't my bad ears .... I did an experiment ....
I kept adjusting the volumes on both tunes ....
When I got to minimal volume ... Xtc's Vocal is louder and more audible than the music ...
Hop on Pop's is just the opposite ... the music is still strong in the background and the Vox is inaudible ...
I'm no expert, so I could be full of (all sorts of things) ... It doesn't diminish my love of your tunes ... just a listeners wish ....
Hope that makes sence ....

I think "Cary's Here" is better than both of them and one of the best alt/pop tunes on IAC.
Between these two I basically feel its a tossup, I just wanted to share.
Bye!

I am incredibly chuffed. Thanks so much for your kind assessment. Flattered as hell.
Spit:
A)
Thanks so much for partaking in this.
B)
I'm incredibly jealous that you got to see XTC before they stopped playing live.
C)
Did you listen? What's your assessment?

Well i go for Ashes Todd....I heard the XTC one ages ago-didn't want to add it to a station.. Catchy tho it is-its catchy in a slightly annoying way-and i know the more i play it the more annoying it'll get....Ashes is much more interesting, charming and atmospheric-i like the tune more and it makes me feel good rather than irritating me..
If 'catchy' was the be all and end all of what makes magical pop, achey breakey heart would be one of the best songs of all time..

Todd, I've been underwhelmed by XTC ever since my first listen and I've listened numerous times to Cash Cow. Ca$hcow. Ooh - I'd better go visit the page and refresh my memory on correct spelling.
Anyway...I dig the direction your recent posts have been going on the "head-to-head" front and figure if the "talented unknowns" all stopped blogging and began doing nothing but writing, recording, and gigging they'd have a better chance of getting where they want to be COMMERCIALLY. And...MAYBE...musically.
xo,
H

Re: Mr. Ison's "catchy" comment - I be curious to know how do "Mellow Yellow" and "Sunshine Superman" fare in your hierarchy along those lines?

Auset:
Glad to help you find them. You know, Andy (Partridge) has his own page here at IAC, too!
Steve:
That a musician as talented (and as steeped in the BritPop tradition) as you would give the nod to me is impossibly flattering. Thank you!
And, as far as what you're saying about "Spiral", I pretty much agree with your assessment. It's a bit too obvious a hook.
Hugh:
You really need to listen to some more XTC. Their best stuff is seriously some of the best rock/pop music ever recorded. Pick up a copy of Skylarking (produced by Todd Rundgren) and you will not be disappointed. Pure Beatlesque bliss!

I've been spoonfed some XTC by a friend in the past and it never grabbed me. But I like to keep an open mind and I certainly respect the opinions of you folks so maybe I'll have another go at it sometime. At the moment I've been feeling like I should stop listening to everybody's music and just get on with developing my own new stuff, which is long overdue, and get my tail on some stages.

XTC, Like HOP on POP (todd) has produced an amazingly diverse catalog of tunes... you really should dive a little deeper, Hugh.
They are worth your time.
TOdd -- Congrats on a ballsy thread, with a LOT of positive feedback on your skills !!

Well i love both Mellow and Superman Hugh ('specially Superman)...Extremely simple tho they are, here's a charm and NATURALNESS about them that i totally love ..Plus Donovans voice and the whole productions are ace..(like Season Of The Witch too)...He reminds me of Bolan in that respect..Really playful simple songs that sound so intuitive and picked out the air....They've got the spirit of pop to me,wheras Achey Breakeys just cack....
