You know what pisses me off?
When bands like The Goo-Goo Dolls make it HUGE, while the guy they're aping (Paul Westerberg/The Replacements) is struggling to make a living with the same sound that the young(er) Turks have made so popular.
Now, let me state, for the record that The Goos made an AMAZING record (back in 1990) with Hold Me Up, but the stuff they're making their $$$ on is the pussed-out version (no offense Super Puss) of what the Mats were doing in 1986.
Hey GOOS!!!
Why not do a Replacements cover on your next record, make it the single, and help out the guy who inspired you in the first place?
I think that would be the classy thing to do.
Again a caveat: The guys in the Goos may be very nice/cool guys, but the way the business works...
Grrrrrrr..........

You don't know The Replacements?
Looks like another musical gap that I'll have to fill you in on.
Anyway.
I know that all music since Bach has been derivative of something. But that's not the point. What I am talking about here is when one band's sound is obviously aping that of another.
Looking to start a discussion. Can any of you think of such a case? How do you feel about such things?

I dunno what to say. Everything I do seems to be aping somebody. I try to pay my respects to the originals by making my love for their work very clear - folks ranging from Bach/Mozart/Tchaikovsky to The Beatles, Eric Burdon, Clapton, the Allman Bros., many others, to Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, to Hank Williams...a long list...I don't know what the magic is that allows one to "borrow" rather than "steal" but that's what I strive for. Can't always do it. The amount of listening I've done...and reading interviews...and watching performance videos...geez, how does anybody do anything completely original? Just do what you love, do it well, pay your respects to the folks who inspired you...seems enough to me. If I had the good fortune to sell a bunch of stuff, I'd gladly cover some songs of folks who had inspired me. Look at Clapton covering Mr. Cale, for example, and then doing the joint album, and getting him involved in the Crossroads festival...that's the spirit...

I'm definitely willing to give credit where credit is due. I don't think offering a plug once and a while for a band or artist that inspires succesful music is too much to ask either. You inspired another question for me HOP, do you believe in the "IT" factor, and should "IT" be credited as a special talent or ability of a performer or is "IT" more of a broader, social determination. Ok now I'm confused. But I hope you get the drift. Jo

I'll be honest, Todd, I don't know of any specific examples like the one you mention. But then, I'm not much of a musicologist. I know that influences tend to seep into anything an artist does and, as such, it's difficult to pinpoint a duplication. However, I'll check into the tunes you cite (I've heard of the Replacements and the GooGoo Dolls, but I'm not that familiar with either outfit's material- sorry). If they are indeed nearly identical, it would be fairly assinine to mimic an artist, without giving them proper due (whether one is a success because of it, or not).
...Hopefully I haven't muddied the waters too much.
Jo - as far as "It" goes, the only person I've ever heard credited with "It" was Clara Bow (I may have mentioned- I'm old).

I always thought goo goos were like the Replacements with everything good missing and a whole lot of commercial nothingness added.
But Westerberg doesn't have to work a day job like me, so he'll be alright.
