Bring the topics back to the front page!
Seriously.
I think that the reason this place feels so dead recently is because the community has been pushed to the back of the room. Part of what made/makes this place cool is the interaction among the artists here, and the discussions that we have.
Those discussions have died down significantly since being moved off the front page.
Can I get a witness?

now byron has made me feel welcome so i am getting there . new members need to be welcomed into your community there are hundreds of them ..
.. It started out feeling like an elite club and that i would have to earn my way in ...

I've always felt that a simple box listing maybe 10 or so different catagories, like say: New Songs/Feedback
New Artists
Recording
Politics
General Discussion
RocknRoll
Instruments/Gear
Song Writing
Hay, Oats, and Carrots
Collaboration
Humor
FlameWars/Disputes
Site Info/Help
Marketing
Industry News
Celebrities
followed by the title, author, and date &time of the most recent post; might make for a blogsphere that's a little bit more user friendly. I think having the the posts seperated into their own seperate little stalls like this, would have the effect of drawing in more casual, specific content seeking reader, who would now be able to read a list of topics of interest, without having to weed through topics of no interest, ....it would also give the more interesting topics a longer shelf life, by keeping them within plain sight longer than the current format, where topics disappear as new ones are introduced, so rapidly, that many times a topic of intrest is quickly off the front page, and soon forgotten.
Marketing experts all agree, ...when it comes to people, you're a very visually oriented species, creature that are far more likely to buy an object, or participate in an activity when something happens to catch your eye, than via a conscious, deliberate intelligent decision like we horses are.
As we're seeing with the Pipeline right now: Out of sight, Out of human mind.
It's like the checkout line at a supermarket, if you've gone there to buy candy, you can go to the proper aisle and find it on the shelf, ....but supermarkets sell far more candy by displaying it at eye level near the checkout line, then they do off the shelf.
By having some catagories, with the latest topic listed, ....folks will find that this particular supermarket offers a far greater variety of their favorite candies, then they noticed whilst plodding up and down the aisles searching for bisquick, and sugar cubes.
I also think management might consider investing in some salt licks too.

Of course, they should be on the front page. How could moving them from view do anything but lower traffic? I mean that is so self evident that I can only assume they want less forum traffic. And that's now what they have.
As for Mr. Ed's idea that the forum should be categorized more finely, I've never understood why people ever try to do that with forums. I mean, that suggestion frequently comes up in low to moderate traffic forms, and then when the topics get segregated from each other then each segment is just a little back water with almost no traffic. Why split them when there is really only enough flow here for one forum?

Everytime i click on IAC these days i'm half expecting to get 'this page dosn't exist'....From the kinda communication we've come to expect from those that run it we wouldn't even be told if IAC was about to shut down for good anyway.
Must take quite abit of money to run a site this size..
Unless they've got some great masterplan up their sleeve- things here are obviously not getting better..
All is not well at IAC-That much is obvious..
I think it was built on the dream thyat indie music could really gain traction in the 'real' world' with real people and that just hasn't happened..
I really used to love this place and believed the dream with them..
Its sad...:(

We agree that the hybrid blog/forum known as the Pipeline is one of the most important parts of the new community, and it will again be a part of the interim home page as well as the home page for the new site.
It is good to see the varied discussions on a wide range of topics, but IAC will not be in the business of offering a platform for sniping at IAC itself.
Since the Pipeline is an even bigger part of the new site, we are moving to line up additional moderator staff, so that it can be featured prominently, with maximum freedom, and without the need for pre-approval per post.
Greater freedom will come from more insightful moderation applied in a timely fashion, and importantly, self-moderation by the community.

@Irwin,
good on hearing that Irwin and thanks for swinging in and adding up some of the happenings in regards to the upcoming changes.
Definately up with keeping the subject matter fluid, with a variety of topics, current goings on with artists and Iacmusic the music scene the many changes and transitions it has undergone in the last number of years, of which I personally have experienced as many other musicians, promoters and investors have.
the landscape is in a state of flux in the music biz and has been for awhile. it is a matter of adapting re-inventing and re-creating oneself and projecting that in their biz,
as for pipeline material self moderation and all that , it is important for us to offer up good topics that are worthwhile and as well keep the pipeline an engaging place to be by having more individuals give up some challenging subject matter. It is sometimes a task at keeping the pipeline robust fresh and interesting,
Sometimes it needs to be sprinkled with the serious matters of music as well as the sometimes, funny humorous material and so on.......
as for the sniping thing Irwin , well . let me just say, that is part of human nature isnt it, and that type of behavior will never ever be changed from some here or human nature in general. , but to make statements that are unfounded or unsubstantiated that is unacceptable, and if that is considered sniping then we all have messed up ....
I am sure we have all been guilty of that in our lives, here, at home with others we work with, I try not to do it, but sometimes do it inadvertently and at other times to challenge people. maybe not sniping but more at pointing out ways a person ,an organization could be better by being open and honest about things ,but it could be called facing up to the truth by pointing out the obvious that sometimes is overlooked, or is it more at bringing to the table aspects that may be lacking or not being tackled properly, as I ramble on as I try to make some sense of what this topic is all about
thanks again for your swing by and posting here with your insight and point of view on the blogs that happen here

Been thinkin' about it, and even though there are valid business reasons for moving it off the front page; it seems that the BLOGS are where this place gets that extra personality lift.
Obviously some of our posts are just dumb (guilty as charged at times), but MOSTLY I find it VERY entertaining to hear the artists shottin' the shit on the blogs.
We just need to stop driving the TRUE characters, the breathe LIFE into the pipeline away.....
THESE are artists / musicians / the counter-culture; of course they're going to be over the top at times,
and drama queens occassionally...
BRING BACK the Larree, with his simple witicisms, RANTS, and heavy-support of all things GREEN;
THE Anjuli, and Crack*a*jack*crow, with bold insights, creative thoughts, intelligent humour, and crazy poetry and prose;
shit, even Ray Porter, who's drunken-stalker-like stuff went a bit too far,
added a LOT to IAC, when he was right on target.
BRING BACK the PASSIONATE posts, or failing the legal possibilities of doing THAT...
let's PUT the PASSION back into this li'l INDIE / underground haven ourselves.

Well Irwin, there would not be so called "sniping" if we knew what the heck was going on...or simple questions and concerns answered without the veil of censorship.
Perfect example...what "new Site"??????? first I have heard of it, and I am here just about everyday. I am not one to give negative remarks without reason, perhaps the new site will be a bit more open and not adverse to respectful, open conversation when issues affecting all are raised.
Where can I find details on the new site??
Regards,
Jeff

Nope, no email from IAC. The only thing in my spam folder was something from "nadia" with a subject line Hi ;)))
If that was you Irwin, sorry I deleted it without reading it.
As to the "front page or not to front page" question, having it here moves it back to the pre-Pipeline days when there might be a few posts a day. That's why the Pipeline came into existence. But it's the company's decision and they'll live with the results.
As for me, I haven't been to the front page in days. I just come straight here now.

There are changes in the works, I am sure that was mentioned way back in the fall 09, at least I remember something mentioned of some major undertakings. but I know in the past when e mailings have come from iacmusic mails directly, but it would just show the title subject matter and nothing would show up in the body of the message so i would have to go to source in my email to find out what was going on....but there are indeed some unique and interesting things from what i remember and hopefully you all get or check your junk spam parts of your emails...i know if people send via my personal artist account I get them but not always from iac mass mailings......
so yes there are things happening from what my memory serves me, dont you all remember this being talked about and brought up.

Partial repost - topics will be returning to the homepage. As stated above in this thread:

A community which self-moderates does so through a number of methods. One of these is for responsible members to ignore inappropriate or provocatively-titled topics, rather than give them additional currency by commenting.
We are aware of email issues, some of which may persist to a degree until our new contact management system is in place (within a couple of weeks). If you think you missed a mailing, please write to the support hotline and request a copy to your address of choice.

I remember the announcements too Bryon, it had to do with new traffic coming to the site for all of us to get more "exposure"...then as with everything else it just died out.
Change is one thing, but Irwin is talking about a "New Site". What does that mean?? Was IAC sold??? New Principals? Is Toby still here? Or do we have a totally new team with a new vision and mission statement.???
Irwin mentioned a new site, and most don't seem to care or question, now that is apathy.. And who is Irwin? I don't believe I have seen him before....
Well I will be here, hope it all works out for the good.

yeah there are some things happening about here and this has been in the planning stages for awhile,. I remember an announcement sometime back.then again that was like 6 months ago and perhaps a few times since
As for Irwin, he introduced himself here on the pipeline a few months ago and suppose there is some involvement with the new management and direction of this rebirth of iacmusic

I am one of a group of new Moderators. In coming weeks, when visits to this site jump, it may get a little crazy on these pages! But that's good.
So carry on and we will try to stay out of the way.
Now just a quick word about rules. Without some rules such things as forums couldn't exist. So here we are.
First thing, have a look at the Pipeline Guidelines. Also:
Try self-moderation.
Please be respectful of fellow community members. Without each other, we are nothing.
Please refrain from making posts merely to bump up a topic.
Please limit new promotional topics to one per poster per day.
Excessively bumped topics, aging/decrepit topics, and topics dredged from the depths will be moved off Recent Topics.
Thanks and best wishes to all,
Irwin

Hi Irwin,
Nice to meet you. Good luck with this motley crew. One thing I like about IAC is the variety of opinions that are expressed. There are some passionate motherf^&*kers here and I love hearing what they have to say. And for sure, the music on this site can really inspire me, so I'd like to see IAC live a long and happy life (especially since I've got a prime membership that's never going to expire - I'll expire before my IAC membership does).
