Your Best.
what is the Best song you've ever recorded?
Just ONE, I'm not talking about you anguishing between 2 or 3 songs..
whats your favorite One!!
you have to have written it, not just played on it.
It can certainly be instrumental though, I guess we'd call that you best Tune.
anyway, I'd love to listen to the piece that you think most highly of!
If you post more than one I'll turn you into a toad and feed you to my cat.
Thanks..

Ours is yet to come...
Okay, okay, so I'm a smart-ass - of the songs we have posted here, I would say Glittering Cities, a beautiful piece of music that still always amazes me, even though it was recorded in 1999. It's seven minutes (plus) of sumptuous grandeur that feels more like five minutes, ending with a Buddhist chant for compassion...

Thanks for the chance to showcase one of our songs.
I have chosen this one because, although it's a very simple tune, I never get tired of it. Lyrically probably not our best but I'm quite happy with the arrangement and the song as a whole. Definitely one of my personal favorites.

"Ashes On the Water"
It's a bit odd (just like me) and takes some twists and turns that take a lot of folks by surprise. It certainly surprised me, as it wasn't completely finished until a day or so before we recorded it.

I gotta go out of town tomorrow, A couple days in the mountains with my gal!
but, a few comments before I go.
SHE'S AN ANGEL
This is a really strong track, Great vocals, I'm always amazed by this kind of songwriting when it's good! I don't think I could write a tune like that even though I love the Beatles!
It takes a certain kind of mind I guess. I love Brian Wilson as well and I always have my Students in my afterschool program learn a Brian Wilson tune, we do the harmonies and try to get those vintage tones...but I'll be damned If I could ever write like that.
PEACE OF MIND
Another great one with that same beatles mojo! great drums and tones, makes me willing to overlook the chord progression ;)
lovely vocal, totally nails the psychedelic feel.
GLITTERING CITIES
It's a great track Susan and Satch, a mezmerising track
you know it is!
Dont you have new material though? As I recall ther's a brand new CD..
huh
;)
FAMILY VALUES
this track creeps me out..
It's a great piece, it sounds like an old Doors record or something.
The spacy tremolo, and the Bass on top of everything, it's an oddly disturbing sound.
Great concept, really amazing how the mood of the instrumentation fits the lyric.
I think it's the "do as I say not as I do" line that clinches it for me
fuckin creepy.
I SHOULD HAVE
Great Guitar sound, very retro and very much for the song, the small stone mojo is cool and the solo could be off of a big brother and the holding company track.
(lots a retro writers on this thread)
I like the way you sort of under sing, (as opposed to oversing)
The theme of the song is cool,
Regret is certainly something we can all relate to...
UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN
This is just great!
Great writing, great singing, the harmonies are perfect..
Just a really strong song, Good production, I wish the Bridge came up more, it's a great change and a great lyric there and it would be Chills if the dynamics came up a bit there, kick in the back beat!...
I think this is a hit song.
ASHES ON THE WATER
This has a Rowdy Bar Band feel to it, a totally live feel.
The lyric is great, it's oddly hidden behind this driving arrangement, it takes a few listens to realize that there's this clever, interesting lyric going on, it's kind of hard to stop moving, it's the sort of song that insists that I get up and move around
WONDER WOMAN
This song just kills me!
It's just as weird as a wombat but I totally LOVE it!
The lyric is so unlikely, it's very endearing, the guitars are great, the sort of sober and precise vocal inflection has this curious and honest quality that's unlike anything I've ever heard before.
UPSET THE BOYFRIEND
This a a rowdy fist fighting wake up with a headache sort of song,, not a real deep lyric, deliberately shallow I suppose, a sort of ode to boozy hedonism.
Great sounding band, I love the bass intro and the way everyone plays for the song.
I like the sort of clinky clanky car crashy Guitar solo.
FIRST CONTACT
wow, what a great tune, I love the images and the funny sounds.
The synth tones are weird! But they really work!
This is really good poetry, this song really got to me.
This song is just damn good art.
One of my favorites I've found around here.
GONDWANA
Not my favorite sort of Genre, I find a lot of "world music" to be the sort of stuff you would stuff a pillow with, but not deliberately listen to.
However, that being said this Dijdgeridoo thing is kind of neat, It reminds me of the voices I hear when I smoke DMT....
The guitar is nice, a little understated maybe.
The piece is well performed and has a neat live feel to it, the Tablas really make it!
I guess I dont get this kind of music, maybe I should score some DMT and try it on another level!
Thanks Guys!
keep em coming, I'm really digging hearing these pieces!

Thank you so much, Never Never Band. What a clever idea to ask for our best songs and then create a radio station with those songs. This is the kind of creative thinking I'd like to see more of around here including from myself. Your review of my song and comments about my songwriting was so generous it really made my day. Brian Wilson is definitely an influence of mine. He's the John Lennon of the Beachboys!
I'd love to see more critiquing of each other's songs on a regular basis.

Hi Never, since I only have two songs here at IAC, it was only a coin flip for me. No, seriously, my song "Listen" has always been a personal favorite. It was written many years ago, and I re-recorded it earlier this year. I tried to stay true to the original flavor, with guitar, cello and voice.

HAPPY FACES
This is the missing Byrds track!
Jingly jangly guitars and tamborine and all!
Really fantastic tones and vocals, This tune has me eight miles high!
There is a lot of Retro, even sentimentally retro stuff in this thread!
Fortunately it''s good, very good actually or you'd all be getting teased..
as it is I'm humbled that you guys can pull it off.
STEP BY STEP
Steve has a real magic touch
Step By Step is a little miracle of a song, the instrumentation is so lush, the vocal so catchy, the harmonies are totally groovy.
I'm often reminded of David Bowie, I think it's the novelty of the changes and the delightful instrumentation. This is one of those songs that sounds familiar not because it's derivative, but because it's tapping into that rarest of veins where only the most deft songwriters are able to dig for gems!
LISTEN
Nice,Haunting,
A lament that seems to come from some lonely place in an elven wood.
I like the strings and the ghostly background vocals, I was going to tease you about the Madam Blue/while my guitar chord progression but I wont because you take it to places it hasn't been before...plus I use that progression too , but I'm not as clever with it..
Your vocal is raw and touching, really nice.....
MANY VIAS
Yes!,
this is a real departure from what I've heard so far in this thread.
This is a weird song, weird the way it kicks off with that Detroit funk sounding thing and then bounces back and forth between this groovy Rhodes and those unlikely strings....It's unlikely, but it works somehow. Not really a hook in there, but still I cant stop listening......
Your voice is is Hot!
very passionate, it makes me blush.
I really like the way you play with inflection, and that lovely octave jump...
THE SUN IS RISIN'
I'm Feeling Jim!!
wow, this is a bug eyed trip, the intro makes me think "No Way, your not going to pull off a vampire trip"
but you do, and in a lively and punky way!
This is not Metal dude, And to my ear not even industrial really, this is the natural progression of a Punk Phenomenon!!
You turn me off with that "Gay Ass" comment, that's a term I despise, but I suppose I should expect nothing less from a bunch of punks! ;)
You guys are audacious, smashing thrashing PUNK!!
It sounds Great!!!!
I hope you're gigging.
PRETTY NOSE
Those Are The Licks!
And they kick ass on an acoustic guitar..
This is dust bowl blues,Train hopping wandering blues..
Those minor pentatonic licks and the curious abandon in the way the time is treated...that's a very cool sound.
I'm surprised because when I look at that pic of you with the les paul and the sort asian looking red shirt I think, "Hippie Tai Chi Instructor"..
;)
I would never expect to hear such fully realized blues music pouring out of that guy!!
FEEL ME
It's Prince in Baritone!
this sounds like a Hit Factory production. It's very good, top shelf production in it's way, it's a lot of compression for my taste but it's impressive in it's own way, it makes for this sort of overwhelming wave of sound where little nuances and dynamic distinctions may be sacrificed but the end result is this Big Godzilla Sized mix!
I like the mooger fooger vocal trip! The scratching stuff is even neat..
The "she's so beautiful" refrain is tasty, hooky! That phazy piano is a trip, really well done.
Thanks all!!
I have to drive to California tomorrow to rescue a friend..But I'd be really happy to see some more tunes here when I get back!

HELLO
Well, this is gorgeous. And it has a guitar solo!
I think I will switch this one for Glittering cities , maybe just because the newness of it.
and maybe because of the details...those swelling guitars, and that distant monster reverb snare hit after "sacred space" , it comes back a few times in the piece and it's oddly compelling, I find myself waiting for it....this is really fine studio craft and a wonderful song as well!
You guys are really in top form, really nice work.
CHINA
first off...wow, what a cool voice!
China is a trippy techno wonder, this could be soundtrack to Appleseed X Machina or Vexile. It has a music for film vibe to me, and I keep seeing futuristic animation scenes in my mind while I listen. The synths voices are all well chosen and the overall arrangement is pretty good! I think one of the complaints I often have about this sort of genre is the lack of arrangement dynamics..I really like novelty, I want to be surprised by some amazing change. This piece is nice but it needs a scary part or something...
;)
MONEY DONT CARE
This is a great tune, a great 3 piece sound too but the voice needs to be the boss here!
This is a great lyric and it's getting lost in the mix...
I like that chorusy guitar but it's too damn loud, or rather it'd be fine if the vocals came up.
I dont like to be a bitch about production but this is one of those pieces where a few tweaks would make an enormous difference.
I do sort of like the vibe of the airy, under sung vocal, the whispery background vocal... but that will only work is you bring the guitar WAY down, and get it panned off to the left, all of this piece is right in the center of the mix so all the parts are stepping on each other,..
Some thoughtful panning and a bit of EQ work on the drums would do wonders with this piece.
Great lyric, very memorable and classy.
Nice work everyone!
Thanks for giving a demented shut in something to do!
;)

"HELLO
Well, this is gorgeous. And it has a guitar solo!
I think I will switch this one for Glittering cities , maybe just because the newness of it.
and maybe because of the details...those swelling guitars, and that distant monster reverb snare hit after "sacred space" , it comes back a few times in the piece and it's oddly compelling, I find myself waiting for it....this is really fine studio craft and a wonderful song as well!
You guys are really in top form, really nice work."
Thank you so very very much!

Thanks for your kind words about my song! You've contributed to getting to No.9 in the blues genre charts....
I'm intrigued by the reference to Dust Bowel blues... misspelling or deliberate pun?
As to 'Hippie Thai Chi Instuctor' ROFL I may have to reassess my image!

HA HA!!
a misspell to be certain...
I do mean the era of the dust bowl drought and the raw sort of vagabond blues and folk that came out of it..

:)
Guys, history will undoubtedly forgive you both even if you pick the wrong one..
you could even Lie!~
Deliberately pick one you don't really care for, or even pick the second or third best, sort of like telling your problem child how Proud you are of them and how you secretly love them best of all!!
who's ever gonna know?
really all the power is in your hands.

well, Robert has been patient..
I was hoping for a few more..
but we'll go with this one.
I NEVER KNEW.
I gotta say, you almost lost me at first..
It took some listening, that incredibly raw rhythm guitar, and your singing are really blunt, totally wearing it on your sleeve..huh?
However, the sentiment won me over and by the third listen I was loving this tune!
It's so sentimental, and the instrumental bridge is lovely..
This is a very touching piece really, I'm not totally sold on the way you produced it, but it works somehow...it sounds very, very honest...
It almost makes me blush, I feel like I'm looking at something very personal...

Hi P.
I really appreciate the review. I am still pretty new to home recording and learning new recording techniques all the time. True life experiences are the best for song writing. Thx again.

I'm not sure it's necessarily my favorite, but I feel at this point my best tune is "Long Time Gone", from a performance and production standpoint.

Eau Du Bo..
Well this is a Jingly Jangly jam band piece, it has a nice feel I guess.
It's awfully repetitive. But it has a New Orleans late night feel that's kind of cool.
I like the vocalist, the lead guitar is pretty spaced out, like Jerry on too much acid.
This type of Jam is generally more fun to participate in than listen to. That being said however the band sounds good and the recording is...decent.
Long Time Gone
This is fantastic..
Beautiful writing and playing. The mix is gorgeous.
The way the theme builds is very clever, and the big Godzilla bridge and solo just absolutely KILLS!!!!!
this is the type of tune that reminds me of just how absolutely fantastic the Indie scene can be and it's the type of music I really search for.
Thanks.

It's hard to be objective about one's own work but I believe my best song is:
Brother John
Also, I just wanted to let you know I wrote a song based on a title you said I could use: "Trance Parent. Thanks for the inspiration! I'm still putting the finishing touches on it and I'm eager to post it as soon as it's ready. The lead vocal and the harmonies are going to be spectacular. The whole production is is quite elaborate and anthemic. I based it on my own experience with a "trance parent" and it's been a very powerful and cathartic thing for me. I hope to have it ready in 2 or 3 weeks. Stay tuned.

I think our best is "Dear Momz ft. Jewelz" by 2mental. It's heartfelt. 2mental was a broke college student at the time and all he could give his mom for Christmas was a song. He came to me with an idea and he wanted me to give him an instrumental for it. He let me hear the first verse he had put together and I told him, "This will be a hit". The rest is history.

Awright I'm caving in...but it's soooo hard...I'm going to suggest "Men of Religion" with the caveat that I'm not really sure.
It occurs to me to add that the following lines represent in part my difficulty in embracing the "hitlist" thang, from the perspective of listener or list-maker:
And I was born with two ears that work fine,
Two eyes of my own, yours ain't better than mine;
You don't know nothin' important I don't,
You never have and I know that you won't
A kind of libertarian creed I suppose.
Thanks for the opportunity to ponder this and contribute.

pHLeGM , I like you bud!
I'm glad I can be a dick to you and you still come around!
The reason I went off like that is that I want you guys to succeed !
I remember plugging our stuff on BBs 9 years ago? maybe it was 10!!~
Back then It really seemed like we were reaching this broader community but really it's not all like that.
As musicians we should conspire together to take over the world, make impossible things happen, overthrow the rich and redistribute their stuff!!
..all of that..
but we don't need to promote our product to each other, we need to conspire together on how to promote our product to the Teaming Masses, the Rabble!!!
:)
Hey thanks for posting some new tunes all!
I have to go (I get to go see Sonny Landreth tonight!!)
but I'll be back with fresh ears tonight and I look forward to hearing what you got!
thanks again

Brother John
Nice, a Rock And Roll Americana Lament!
I'm getting Vibes of Bob Seger, the Harmonies are very cool, going a 5th below the lead, it has a haunting gospel feel to it.
The guitar solo could be Duane Allman himself!
very tasteful!

Peace Of Mind
Ok, I guess we can keep riffing on that Prudence Progression.
It is a nice one..
I dig the way the drums shift from 8ths to 16ths, it gets that psychedelic era vibe going. The instrumentation and your incredible octave jumps in the vocal are spot on!! The John Lennon mood is prevalent and very touching, when I sit here and look at the Image of John I get choked up...My generation may not remember where we were when Kennedy was shot but we ALL remember where we were when john was shot and it still haunts us.......

DEAR MOMS
2Mental & Jewelz
Wow, what flow! 2 mental has that voice! It's like Coolio or Chuck, it grabs your attention. Jewelz voice is lovely, Gives the thing an R&B classic feel.
I love the overall vibe of this one, it's a very touching message.
All in alll I'd call this A fantastic addition to the all to thin catalog of Positive Rap. The beat is simple but nice, the Bass line is Slammin! I wish it was louder! I find myself going for the EQ..
Great Track

THANKS "never never"!!! I appreciate the comments on the song. Sometimes, I think simple is better. I really wanted people to feel the words that 2mental was speaking on this song. The emotion that he portrays is what makes this song. We are trying to bring a different side of Hip Hop that has been missing in the genre for awhile. I actually had more bass in the song when I first made the track, but I thought it was a little too much. I wanted to try to get my version of a "Steely-Dan" type vibe with the music. Hopefully when the track finally gets mastered professionally for the album, more of the bass will be heard. I will let the studio know this when it's time to do the mastering. Thank you for your input!!!

Men Of Religion
Hugh Hamilton..
I think Hugh is a reincarnated Woody Guthrie, I hope it's not too Ironic to make a Reincarnation reference when reviewing an anti religious rant....
This type of material , this wandering dust bowl minstrel feel really gets to me, it evokes visions of the hardship and rebellious spirit that created the American story teller. Great Track Hugh!!!
