Ego
I'm so and so, and I'm so great and important. I do this or that, and that makes me really deserving of praise and respect. How dare people treat me like an equal? Can't you see how brilliant I am? I really am somebody because I have a lot of money. Look at how powerful my friends are. Don't you know who we are? Look how much smarter I am than everyone else. Look how great of a guitar player I am. Don't you know that really makes me somebody? That makes me better than the average person, didn't you know? I'm grossly in love with myself. I'm better than you because of my talent and clout.

I'm tired of you ego, I wish you'd go away.

Hey Jesse ... I agree with your feeling .... Even though I try to be aware of it ... my own ego gets in way sometimes ...

Satch recommended some reading awhile back and recommended works by Eckhardt Tolle

Don't know if you are familiar with him or not but I got a copy of "A NEW EARTH," by Eckhardt Tolle .... It was a fabulous read and I think everyone should read it ... of course many will not but I'm glad I did ... it helped to reinforce beliefs I already felt about the ego and was a very interesting read as well ..

Peace
Sam

Perspective - choose a clear night, lie on your back on the earth and look with wonder at the millions of stars in the sky above you, grasp the realisation that one is merely a tiny dot, a pin-prick, in the vast cosmic scheme of things.

You don't want to get rid of it. Just recognize it for what it is. This simple act of recognition will put it in its place and activate a larger consciousness within you, a consciousness that connects all and is the true source of inspiration.
In the future, when you say 'I', know that you are not referring to the 'I' that bears your name (and does all those 'great' things), but rather to that underlying, infinite consciousness. Amazing things will begin to happen in your life.
Have a great day!
Helmut

Haha, that's a good one Code. Here's another one...

How many guitar players does it take to change a light bulb?

Just 1, they grab the light bulb and the world revolves around them.

Thanks for the input guys, pretty insightful stuff.

When I hear an over inflated ego speaking, I understand that it is always masking a fear or a deep feeling of Inadequacy. Real power doesn't need to prove itself. Eye

Hi Jesse, yes, the ego is a sticky something one can stumble upon or get lost within. Which is why one should take it with a pinch of salt...

@ satch: the idea of watching the stars is great, and a humbling yet edifying experience for mankind. Too sad that in today's cities, light pollution masks most of the stars at night. So no wonder metropolises are great playground for egoism...

BTW I wanted to point out, I wrote this from the view point of me looking to others and what their actions and words say to me. It's not about my ego. I feel I'm very grounded when it comes to who I am and music and all that. That doesn't necessarily make it true. My point was there's a lot of ego where there shouldn't be, and it gets in the way of so many things and can actually hinder relationships and the creative process.

It raises the question not only of do posters on the boards express their true feelings or are they showing only the parts of them which they hope will cause others to behave in a desired way (manipulation); but also whether the personalities behind the names are real, or just the invention of entities otherwise engaged, who are merely dabbling here.

Steve, good questions. However I'm not necessarily talking about IAC users, I'm talking about all people, from all walks of life. Just observations really. I can actually feel ego from some people, even if it's on TV. I just think a lot of people need to get over themselves. Am I jealous?

NO you're not jealous. Maybe just feeling that it has directly effected your life/creative/art. I had a period of time where I felt hostage to multiple Ego's while begging only for an equal voice & selfless commitment to the Story/emotional level/best interests/Song. I thought that as musicians/songwriters/artists the Egos would be dropped with a chance to operate on this level. What it did do is force one of the Egos to expose its intention to wait until last few days before a series of our biggest shows come into the rehearsal studio with a total change (and I am talking melodies) to all our existing songs forcing everyone to adapt. Then change it so complete that it would not even be recognizable. It was so shocking when this was admitted after brought to ahead. And the most insulting, disrespectful and rage causing act you can commit. Not the right person. Move on. Cannot avoid Egos. We all have them. Sometimes it is a fine line between confidence, experience, fear, insecurity, wisdom and unique vision all factoring together to form Ego. Sometimes it's only a matter of perception that may change with time into the understanding of the opposite.

As for the truth or deception of others on IAC. To accuse or feel suspect of everyone will only create the wrong atmosphere and ruin every topic. It's not too difficult to tell whether were using a quote or written words from another source (Either from lack of experience and person application) they believe to be the truth. I we can also notice when we are really writing to ourselves as a way to address a problem or issue effecting us at that moment. Or when it's a complete mask of Bullsh(t it will become very apparent as well. And the best way is to stick with the topic and truth. I have been extremely impressed with so many. Beyond my expectations.

And I'm over you.
And, let's face it, I am SO over everybody... because I have risen above all of it to a higher plane.

So much higher than any of you little people who look up to me because of how far over you I am.

---and we all have an ego----!

It defines us, but at a certain point ------it can become narcisism (sp? )

there are many of these types in this industry--- and also in politics

people who believe their own PR

IMO ego is OK------Narcisism stops real communication!

thanks for all the opinions here!

We can never get away from our ego! Ego is not bad, it serves to show us when we identify something within the self. It is the teller of our stories and can be a defense mask for relationships. Perhaps the key to having one's ego serve creatively vs destructively is to know when you are projecting your self on another and rather than blame what you see as the other, choose to act responsibly by your love rather than from the reactive mind.
