I did a collab with my Dad...
Yep, sure did. I've been wanting to do this for a while. He wrote the song and invited me to do whatever I liked, so I put down some drums and keyboard. He did the vocal, guitars and bass. I thought I'd share it with you guys, it seems to fit right in here at IAC. I pretty much owe my music endeavors to my father and nobody has supported me over the years like he has whether it was emotional, spiritual or gear. He has definitely helped me along my way and gotten me where I'm at. I love you Dad. Enjoy!

So cool!
I wish that my dad were musically inclined. But, alas, I am the only one in my family who is. This had to be a lot of fun.
And, on top of that, this is a pretty cool song. Tell your dad, he not only raised a pretty good kid (who is a damn good musician), but is a pretty fair musician and songwriter, himself.
Thanks for sharing this.

Yeah ... this is definitely strollin' in the park ... smokin' a phatty ... bein' amazed by a rainbow ... thinkin' bout how sweet life can be music ...
Kudoooooos to your Dad for writing such a FANTASTIC song ... and to you also for keepin' that dad blasted metal from rearing it's ugly head in the background ... :)
Of course I'm just kidding you Jesse ... I truly do like metal ... but it couldn't hold a candle to this ... A deep soulful song, that has GRACE ... something metal generally lacks IMHO ...
I think it's great you teamed up with your father ... My dad can play and he has a fantastic voice ... but he is also stubborn ... he won't record ... and sadly, he doesn't ever play anymore ... but every once in a while I catch him singin' so I know it's still inside him ... and that's the most important part ...
Peace to you and your pops !

Me and my dad did this kinda stuff when he was still around. He played professionaly and taught me a lot. It's good you're making use of his and your time together.
Cheers to you both,

Thanks you guys, really. This place does wonders for my self esteem! lol
Sam you really like metal? Seems unlikely... :) You are right though it's hard to be graceful when you're yelling at people.
My dad has been playing guitar for over 50 years now... it's ridiculous how many songs that guy knows... he's like a human jukebox! Most everything I've learned about music and playing I've learned from him. I learned so much when I was playing with him and some of his bands back in the day... looking at it now, it was pretty cool for all those older experienced musicians to let some 16 year old kid play drums for them.

I went and checked out some of your Dad's tunes around the web ... pretty talented guy !
... of course I like metal ! ... I've never liked Metallica though ...
... Hell I was a kid once ... :) .... I know you probably don't want some old fart telling you stories about "the good old days" ... so I'll be short ... :)
Back before metal ... in the days I was a huge Bob Dylan and other folk artist fan ... I still loved all kinds of music ... and still do ...
Alice Cooper seems mild today .... but his shows were PHENOMENAL !!! ... I watched Roy Galleger play so loud one night, he blew this HUGE amplifier up ... and I don't mean it stopped working ... I mean it BLEW UP and pieces literally flew out into the crowd .. :) .. I was about 15 feet from the stage .. :)
I saw Jeff Beck ... Jefferson Airplane ... Foghat ... Pink Floyd twice.... Blue Oyster Cult 3 times ... as well as many, many other bands Light Medium and Loud ... I love it all !
... Oh and how could I forget Blue Cheer ? ... They were the first of the really hard rock bands to arrive on the scene ... and pretty damned good too ...
Oh yeah ... I saw Robin Trower twice too ... that's probably where my hearing went south .. :)
... and Gracie Slick could out scream any of todays metal singers ..
Oh yeah ... I saw Ted Nugent twice too ... maybe that's where my hearing went ... :)

Sam - Yeah he's got some stuff on myspace... and several CD's here and their really, but you gotta be lucky to get one. ;)
"... Hell I was a kid once ... :) .... I know you probably don't want some old fart telling you stories about "the good old days" ... so I'll be short ... :)"
Haha, that was funny man. :D But I don't feel that way so much, there's a lot to learn. You can't be that old Sam... I bet you're my Dad's age. He's not old quite yet... but he's getting there, haha. It's scares me actually, watching my parents grow older because I know what's coming and it freaks me out to think there will be a time when they're not around... that sucks. :(
Sounds like you've been to some crazy shows! Sadly, I've only been to three shows man. Three. And 311 was two of them... but it was magical. Joan Jett and The Blackhearts with Heart was the other, and actually Joan Jett threw it down, they sounded great. Heart got up there with their big TV screen and big fancy band and sounded too loud and half as good.
Whoa, I'll have to check out this Gracie Slick cuz I've heard some amazing metal singers dude.
P.S. Metallica sucks. haha

I couldn't find anything on you tube to really do Gracie or Grace Slick justice ... but here are a couple of clips
This is funny ...
This doesn't do her justice ... because of the low over- all volume ... but I'm here to tell you she could really scream ... this clip was from 1981 and she was still not completely screamed out ... but nothing like her early days ...

Hey Jesse-
Spot on production here, bud. There's a couple parts where the doubled acoustic riff is slightly out of time between the right and left parts, but on the whole ... everything sits nice and clear in it's own place.
Great job on that!
Love your Dad's voice, it suits the material perfectly ... kind of a lazy river delivery as the song lopes along.
Cool stuff J!

"Do you EVER hear a song or recording that don't need f*cked with ?"
Haha Sam. :)
BTW Kev that reminds me, you think that's bad you should have seen me trying to put drums down to this tune. He didn't use a click track to record this tune because mostly it's just him and his acoustic when he records, and I don't think I was initially in mind when this song was laid down. I bet there's a good 5 bpm variance at times, which is why the drums are loose in some spots because it was my task to follow the best I could after he sent me an mp3 with the guitars vocal and bass... all I mixed in was the drums and keyboards, and the drums are done live on a keyboard because I was unable to program anything due to the timing... so considering the circumstances I think it turned out OK.

Nice one Jesse. And cool to hear that your Dad's musical inclinations, and gettin' to play with him, encouraged you.... 'Cause he's got an AMAZINGly talented son, too! Nice arrangement & great job fillin' in the BLANKS with the drums, after the fact & no click track. Dig his kinda dylan-like qualities.
Now I Know why your stuff is all so damn good, you're like HUGH & can play any instrument you put your hands on... I'm just now starting to force myself to learn drums, but got a LONNNNG way to go.
Anyhoo, enjoy that connection with your Dad -- I've had it a couple of times with my oldest Son livin' with me, when he's screwed around on the drums.... hopin' that he'll push himself to go further with music. But you can't force it, or they'll resent doing music.
And that's one of the reasons I think guitar hero & the like, are a little bit EVIL... too easy for kids to avoid learning to play an actual instrument & CREATE original music themselves, rather than feining to be playing cover tunes on a video game!
Welcome to PHLEGM PHAVORITES OVERFLOW, by the way...

Of course, Sam :^D ... but I liken knowing the production side of music to understanding the finer points of a sport.
Athletes can be beauty in motion, appreciated for the physical skills and abilities all on their own.
One can watch a football or basketball game w/o knowing a single rule and still yet appreciate watching nonetheless. The same cannot unfortunately be said for baseball or golf ... which I refer to as "sports to take naps by" ... lol ...
But if one knows the rules of the game, why a referee made a certain call, what strategies the coach is employing, or how amazing was it that that athlete did what he did?
... then what happens is one can truly appreciate the full beauty of the complexity of the matter.
Same with music. One can be a listener, and just enjoy the art at the face value of it, or one can go a little further and become a musician ... or go a little further and become a writer/performer ... and then go even a little further deep into the intricacies of sound recording and production.
So when I listen to a song, I'm hearing and appreciating the complexity of the matter on many levels ... and I can like a song for the writing, the performance, the arrangement AND the production value.
... and when it's good on few levels, but maybe misses on others ... it's still good.
But when all the pistons are firing on all levels ... it's a thing of true beauty.

This is very good. I did see the other thread about some purported "imperfections" but I just listened to the whole thing through and didn't hear anything that jumped out at me as an error. This whole thing is really well done. I thought the doubled guitar offset was by design - sounds very natural to me...kudos to you and Dad. He got anymore tunes in the trunk?
