Well this is a day I've been waiting for for a long time, everybody stop what you're doin' and take a look here.
Today we're bringing you something you've never seen anywhere before. :) This is an important moment for IMP and really, for the history of sites like these.

I'll go into other aspects and answer questions later in this thread. But first you need to watch this. Needless to say the actual page displays are in reality much clearer than they are depicted on this video.

You might want to view full screen.

ok just a few more items I wanted to touch upon. ok now, obviously if you want to do well on the charts, promote your stuff on facebook, etc. For those artists that play themselves a lot, there aren't many folks like that but there are a few - of course now by IP, admin can see what you're up to. I want to make this clear upfront, we reserve the right to deem anyone unchartable if they're finding ways to game the charts, past our filters. You'll get warned first though.

Now it's probably going to shock you how many short plays you get. It's an unfortunate result of the short attention span most online listeners have, but remember, they might be trying to quickly mine songs for their stations, and if they last 13 seconds, you'll get a point.

No we're not hoping you get consumed with plays and charts, but we wanted to have them, so the idea was to do the best quality ones we could do, and that's what this is.

This gives credibility to stats and charts.
I have loathed the charting system here because it does not reflect reality.

rewind: MP3.com
We spent a lot of time busting the trading circles and gamers because there was actual money at stake, but also because some of actually give a fuck about what is truly being represented and not interested in busting out our cocks for pissing match. It is also a reflection of the OMD's integrity when there are charts full of self played artists who in any sensible persons observations should probably not be that dominating on the charts.
//

So here it is. This is exciting, and I am really stoked for you, Scott, I know how much it means to you to have a tool like this in place.
Cheers, dude!!

What if a song lasts less than 2.5 minutes?
Is it not possible to get credit for a full/complete play?
I have a few songs that run less than that time. So, those songs are worth less?

If folks haven't been to my page in a while, I've added several songs that I had removed a while back. Some of you who just arrived here probably haven't heard them and I'd love to introduce them once again.

Todd, yes. However most plays don't get completed to begin with. If we want to keep the chart integrity we couldn't give folks ways to maneuver. Having been at mp3.com thru the various gaming scandals, it's not hard to imagine somebody bringing out a number of really short songs for that purpose. Still though a 2 minute song can get 9 points, you get enough of those and you'll move up to the top of the charts.

The current stats have run since mid February. When they reach 60 days they will be on a 60 day rolling format. This is still kind of beta so we'll be looking closely to see if things work in the way we drew them up. Also, the filter happens once every 12 hours or so, so sometimes you'll get points when a song is first played and then it will be flagged as not unique so the points will go away.

Yes the video with the explanations was really good.
don't shoot me Scott its just an idea the new stats are great how they are .I can't imagine how much work this took. It would be nice if the summary page showed both the rank in genre and the total rank instead of only total rank.

I'll go hide under a rock now.

We're thinking of adding some stuff to the summary page actually, but there's another work project that we're doing first before we get back to the stats. Several things that we had put on hold while this got done.

These are the best most honest stats ever for Indie artists.

Stupendous.

(I'm also flabbergasted by the response on facebook to posting some stuff and how I can tell who it is listening from the stats :)

I'm glad folks like it, the only nay I know of was from Old Man Warner. heh

You know how in sports they rely more and more on what they call sabermetrics? Well this is sabermetrics for artists. ok, the climate is kind of screwed up for artists but we make inroads all the same.

The tact we exercise in networking and promoting our art seems to be reflected in comprehensive data sources, like the new charts here.

I'm not savvy with sabermetrics, but in context, it get what you are saying.

Having a tool like this enables us to more accurately gauge what affect our music is having on our target market of listeners, and/or help us find a target market (find a market in my case, because I have no idea who my market is at this point).

I mean, I want people to like my music, but that has not been my driving motivation for creating music. In m mind, I just want to record and master something that makes me want to listen to it over and over like all my favorite music.

I admit, I haven't checked out the stats cave yet, but I did see the charts morph real quick and that was exciting.

In my life now, I still feel young enough to chase the dream seriously, and what I mean by that is creating a body of work that warrants publication and monetary return, and gaining a better sense of what may or may not be viable/marketable is critical for advancing projects that based on analysis and stats give me a more clear picture of my strengths and weaknesses.

Again, Scott, I am stoked about the new stat cave, and am really looking forward to using it.
