How can we get more people to post their music and participate here?
I think we really need some new blood, and right now is the perfect time to do some recruiting! People all over the world are stuck at home, and let's face the facts - live music venues will probably be the last business that opens up again. So a lot of musicians need to find something new.

Ideas?

I am working with a lady who lives in Austria, originally from BC. she has a page here but has not added music in many many years. She started a new group what is way cool, I will make an effort to see who may be interested, need to get a kind moderator though, Brutus swings his big ass too much and knocks people off balance lol

Really, people just need to lay back a bit. Like, the Nashville guy was such a great addition here, and eventually would have brought some of his Nashville friends over. And that would have been awesome for the site. If a few new peeps go a little post crazy in the beginning, we should allow them that space. Let the noobs have their fun. :D

I remember that, Bluto. And I think you guys really bent over backwards to try to make it right.

But in the future, I would like to see a less heavy-handed approach to enforcement - especially with new people. Of course let them know if and when they need to tone down a bit, but allow some room for newbies to be newbies.

Because I am getting ready to turn a lot of new people on to our site. :)

Good comments, Larree.

With respect to Bluto, moderation can be, and usually is, walking a fine line at the best of times, as well as requiring a large measure of objectivity, particularly when it involves managing an unknown temperament as with new members, and a challenge even when it involves a member of some years on the site.

'Judgment' has never been proven foolproof, calling upon reason, and dare I say, common sense, to be the guide to an acceptable conclusion in such matters.

Hope you are successful in your recruiting drive.

Neil

I look at it differenty-----there is heaps of great music here on IMP that hardly anyone excepting Scott, Norm and Bryon have listened to----what we need is a bigger Audience---

For example when I was busy here I also had 2 FB sites (personal and band) plus a Twitter acct also Reverb Nation and Bandcamp----all these had links to IMP which required merely one click. OK . Of course this requires decent numbers of 'Followers" or Friends 400 is a reasonable number imo

I discovered that from IMP---- you can post an add for your page BUT you can also post a SONG to FB or Twitter, by deleting the first part of your page add/ and replace with the URL of any song you wish to advertise (simply go to the individual song page) copy and paste the URL to your timeline or tweet. These plays will show up in your stats here at IMP----I know Neil W Young is promoting his individual tunes on FB and also you Laree----not sure if you are using this method though. If every muso here did this, say once a week, there might be an accumulative effect of peeps being drawn into IMP as a place to visit for great Indie music. I hope this makes sense----I think Mortimor is onto it as well as Scott?
TWEET it to your followers or put on your FB music or personal page. cheers

I don't see it happening ever, just look at the reaction to a great artist like Mark Gormley, try and rationalize that? I was literally threatened with expulsion for featuring some of Mark Gormley's better efforts a few years back and when I re-introduced Gormley's music just a week ago that threat was made good on.

Sorry but there does seem to be a pattern emerging here, the more successful artists like Gormley & the Nashville guy will continue to be targeted and run off so a few people with very fragile egos won't be offended.. This isn't the first time this has happened and it won't be the last..

Good points, everyone. Maybe if we focus on keeping this fun - because nothing will ever be the way it was. Concerts, sports, other entertainment - it's all over, really. No more gatherings for a good long while. Like, you really think people will stay six feet apart in a mosh pit? The party (as we knew it) is over. So, let's turn this place into a party! Seriously. If we all just lighten up a bit and become more tolerant - obviously not to the point of allowing total anarchy - we can make this comfortable old junker the destination it was always meant to be.

Why not, it's done all the time. And why shut out artists that deserve to be heard? I would think that should inspire at least someone in authority to maybe send an invite to some of the new people being featured? Phil Thomas Katt from "The Uncharted Zone" has a great roster of artists who could all be here but again, it seems there is very little interest in featuring new talent and I don't expect that to ever change.

Well sad state of affairs is all I can say, hijacked thread. I can't stand it. I hope we can move forward, yet this type of thing does not help. We have seen this type of behavior before and like I said years ago it drives people away, I mentioned this here years ago and posted it, and was derided and scorned about what I am going to post here again, so after sussing out musicians who used to frequent this place and asked them what happened, basically many they said could not stand the behavior and attitude that seem to be pervasive around here, and honestly, it is true, We saw it happen a few years ago again where someone was berated by a creature who poses here as a moderator and gave up, nice shitstorm that was.

Nope, no hope for IMP when this reoccurring theme that seems to rear its ugly damn head.

Makes me wonder as well, should I even be spending the kind of time and energy here when I could be focusing it on something more productive. I think so, sure it can be fun , but this detracts from it, idiocy and childish stupid behavior. way to go

And now, to get back to Larree's original post, from a station manager's point of view, and I think Bryon would have something to input here, I find that to many new artists are left behind, thus no incentive to follow through with more tracks. There has to be a way to awaken existing stations managers for that is where the effort should be made in this angle that I present. I can only do it by example,

Your thoughts anyone,

Thanks for your followup thoughtful post here Norm, and bringing it back to the original intent of Larree's suggestion of how can we get more people to post their music and participate here, and saying that, this is a GREAT platform here at Indie music people, with great music and very dedicated station managers. A big shout out of course to those few who keep it bound together with their personal sacrifices, dedication, personal desire and love for the place holding it together with baling wire, string, a bit of crazy glue and a patchwork of money to pay the bills, even though few.

This has been a thriving environment off and on here but as well has had a checkered past at times, speaking bluntly, from the heart and truthfully there have been incidences that have contributed to it being a mean spirited place which occasionally which detracts it from its original purpose of being a place for musicians to grow their talent share their stories songs and aspirations and help build the fabric of community. IMP could be so much better, and more productive and more dynamic. Instead of it shining like a beacon for artists to want to stick around they drift away due to the sometimes nasty condescending biting remarks that occur here, and the threats of being terminated, of course, some have brought it upon themselves.

I think it is time to change the knee-jerk putdowns that happen here and the overbearing control freak behavior that rears its ugly head which only turns people off. It is a sick and twisted way to be to another human being. We need love care calm and a welcoming inviting environment to help nurture and develop trust and build relationships. Saying that, i have over the many years being here at IMP have been grateful and thankful for those who have support me, and to those I have done collaborations with, so there are wonderful beautiful results I have benefited from as a member of IMP, saying that it could be so much better without this occurrences of what has transpired recently, and one cannot blame just one individual. This place needs to be more open and tolerant

Some of us few hardcore enduring types love the pain so much we continue embarking on our journey to somewhere else instead only to return. LOL .

I Hope this thread and input that has been building and growing will help some of us to give our head a shake and stop this boinking of people and threatening attitudes and of course all those bearded ugly creatures that pop up from the underworld and belch out their own insipid stupid statements

Gotta let people shine. "Everybody Is a Star"! And when a new star comes to the pipeline to promote their music on the site we should let them have their fun. Even if they get a little excited and post a bunch of posts in a row in the beginning. Every dog gets a little crazy when you give them a new rawhide bone. They eventually settle down. If someone does that, instead of just banning them bring back an older thread with a good discussion, or start a new one. Then engage the newbie on one or two of their threads and shoot the breeze. Make them feel at home here. And then they will bring their other musician friends because IMP people are so @#$%ing mellow and cool. Right? :D

Yes Larree- let people shine, it is about the people, the artists, promote them feature them, I was longwinded with my personal bone to pick on this thread cause I have seen a lot happen here and stuck it out probably longer then most, and gave my opinion of what has happened, no one can discount or say that is false, a lot of crap stuff has happened here , but we have to move forward, and still here I am, supporting musicians songs and featuring them, not as much, yet still want to when I can, also if some one has a bone to pick why not let it stay here and FFS get rid of that beardo weirdo pinheaded B---o

But seriously, I just want to know that when I tell someone that this is a cool site for hosting and sharing music run by good guys who are dedicated indie musicians, too, they won't come looking for me later!

I can't help but feel that the mods would even enjoy their gig more if they took a more laid back approach.

Bryon and Larree, your input here is based on what is on the pipeline wich is good in its own way I guess. But what I'm talking about is what is happening on the front page of IMP. Bryon, you have explained to us on previous post that there should be movement on that front page and I thought you were dead on about that. I actually realized that early on in my way of working here. I move tracks and I move artists. It works for me and it seems to work for a lot of artists, every one gets to be on the front page on a regular basis. It shows even more if you check the stations page. Right at this moment "Tina Marzola" - new artist - is on the front page. What I would give to see other station managers pick her up because that is the way I think new artists should be welcomed. That is the way they should be nurtured to contribute more of their tracks and stay within this family.

Now that front page is moving, good show. This is what has to happen on a regular. Station Managers making thins happen on that front pages, I say it's more for the artists than it is for the stations, and for any managers who are not active well this is the way it's done. Probably the same group of managers doing the work right now but that's OK since we are showing others how it's done. Just do it.

Yeah, Norm, got your point, although I have featured artists a lot, for years, presented them and talked about some occasionally on the pipe when I feel moved to do so. It is something I have been doing here for a long long time. There comes a time though when One has to step back and do less, not more, yet, I think I have some desire to continue doing this, but it needs to be organic, some people are not going to be moved in the same way you are, or me, or Steve April or Larree, or Chandra Moon or Paul Groover and Richard Scotti,Neil w Young and Scott .That is about where we are at for involvement.

Lets face it, we have our particular interests, song likes or dislikes. I pick and choose. and dont go too heavy on one artists music, I scatter my music about to various stations which have various styles. SMASH is one with heavy duty grinding kick your head in vibe. Chilltime is more mellow laid back. IMPNATION well that one is meant for a few I feel deserve to be there, not many will get that recognition,so you see, we all have our niche, our tastes and likes vary. I wont add everything I see, I dont even listen to everything uploaded. I lean towards certain artists I have come to know here. but at the same time I taste more on occasion when I get the chance, like a said a few months ago, I am not on the hammer to add every song I see, first, I dont have the time, I have other interests, I have my artist page at spotify, I am building my listeners there and working on occasion with my fellow collaborators.

I have some issues I am dealing with ,I am the P O A for my dad who is in extended care complex unit. I have a lot to deal with there. I have some family concerns and challenges. With this Covid thing, that has complicated things. I have to be careful of my own health, which I shared some time ago, so no, I wont be as active, and also I know what kind of a job I have done here at IMP for going on 16 years, dealt with artists in my promotion biz, have my own teaching biz, but both of those are being scaled down.

I am focusing on me, my family my music, I just dont have the time to spend here like I used to, We of course thank you for your volume of work and featuring the artists you do so well, I just dont have the time, energy or desire to do that anymore here at IMP, on occasion, I will. cheers

Understandably Bryon, you've got a lot on your plate and I was using what you were talking about on a previous post about movement on that front page to make the same point. I'll get back to this. You've done your share for sure.

In the spirit of sharing, I spent the last week of January on the Acute Observation Floor of The Ottawa Heart Institute. My legs had given up on me. The problem was that arteries had started closing in on themselves and the 66 year old clicker was pumping like crazy to get blood flowing up and down those legs. I had become a prime candidate for an imminent stroke or heart attack. Released from the hospital on February 2 when the hospitals here were just about starting to gear up planifications for what was coming - released with prescriptions and physio instructions. I have since left my job (I had been working on a graveyard shift since 1996 as a contractor through an angency at our Prime Minister's swithchboard - glad I don't work there anymore) Half my revenue is gone. Live off CPP and OAS and supplements that our government is doling out for us. Moved in with my sister who starts Chimothrapy this Friday for lung cancer, what awaits us both is unknown
but we both try to keep our spirits up. A lot of our vulnerable life is taken up by long waiting periods for telephone medical appointments that may or may not happen when scheduled. Just got a medical call today that was supposed to happen 3 weeks ago.

The situation is afoot and now back to the question at hand.

Let's put aside us usual suspects when it comes to managing.

How do we get other managers to start managing it.

The way I manage my Backtracks Station is that I look up the Station Pageviews page and find the stations that haven't been updated since 2010 or less. There are quite a lot at any given time. I mostly assume that these pages are being viewed by the owners

The question is how do we approach these people to interest them into updating.

The question is out there.

OK Larree, now wich collums on that front page would need to move more. The only movement that we can create now as managers is the latest station adds collum. I would suggest to the powers that be that the spotlighted stations collum should move on a regular basis and the latest station adds collum be expanded.

Hey Mike, nice to know we're neighbours. The Dimestore Playboys operate out of Ottawa also. Thought I'd give them a plug here.

But back to the question, what to do with the front page.

I put myself in the shoes of anyone looking up this site and I think they'll think that there's not much going on especially if they go back the next day and it's still the same except for that small station adds section.

I'm open for an open discussion on this subject of the front page as I think there lies
the key ingredients to attracting and keeping new artists.

I'll return to this thread for discussion on this aspect only.

In the meantime I'm going back to moving tracks and artists.

@ Norm
To be fair IMP has a lot to offer and provides for the artists many things that are possibly unknown to you, and or you may know.
The following are some of the benefits here that have been developed over the years

Statistics and information of plays.

The Stat Cave

View Daily Plays Log

View Plays Summary and Chart Rankings

Also, for the most part for every station add artists get a notice that they have been added to a station (s) via email, that is if the artist have provided a contact email

So lets look at that aspect, all the station managers have is what is on the main page and station updates and possibly people adding thank you comments on the station page or sometimes on the station managers page

So without understanding that we are shortchanging all that has been developed for the artists.

Also there is nowhere else where there is a community like Indie music people where we they all of us can share our thoughts, post about music, things that are going on, ideas and even a Review / commentary page where artists can interact and share their songs looking for other artists input about their songs
So to be fair this place has much to offer. not just what is happening or not happening on the entry/front page, that apparently from my evaluation has been programmed to be that way, at first I was kinda what? but it is the way it is, and I accept that FWIW

I hope this helps

Agreed Bryon, I'm totally aware of what's available for the artists here at IMP but my point now is what is available for the average Joe or Josephine tuning onto this great site's front page wich would include possible new artists, I'd dare say not much. That front page is stagnant. I've seen it in the not so long ago past being more vibrant with activity wich has been pushed to the side by the powers that be for whatever reasons. There were a lot more spots for the latest station adds and a updated station section that made the page more active. It seems to me that these things would have been alluring to average Joe or Josephine. Like I say, I'm sticking to this front page issue for now.

Could be updated more on featured songs and i would like to see active station managers able to submit picks there as well that be something to consider .I actually am more interested in topic section then front page perhaps there could be a todays or artist of the week thing
The station aspect could be shuffled weekly i guess and it is likely it can be programmed to do so automatically so various different stations are shown . Perhaps there could be a station manager of the week or month as well as artist of the week month whatever. After all this is about artists but should include listeners who frequent this place but honestly how many are there probably most listeners are artists listening to their own music. Look we are the pawns here and we are not controlling things that is in the hands of the CEO PROGRAMMERS AND THOSE WHO RUN THE PLACE . So whatever is going on its the way it is. We carry on as managers of stations get pleasure out of listening .ultimately we have no say
I accept that

I would love to see the 'spotlighted stations' column change once a day. And the 'featured songs' and 'kayak classics' columns should both change weekly. That would be a major improvement to the front page. Heck, that would be a really smooth move, actually! And maybe change the review/commentary column to a new artists column. That would be very cool, too. Give the noobies a chance to be on the front page.

I like those ideas Larree, and what Norm said, no question, the front page has to indeed be fresh and moving like Norm suggested, yet all we can do is make and suggest ideas. Charts featured songs that is need to be freshened up,.station managers could make suggestions sending to email or a special suggestion box somewhere on the site, we have a lot of highly qualified listeners and people who have a good handle on good tracks , that would help and assist people be more inclined to participate as station managers, or listeners, anyways, the site does need a makeover, or updating, it is stale, but we are here, down here, over there, and they are ,well way up there. if you catch my drift.lol .I am past the point of doing much, done enough, others need to pick up the mantle and carry on.good luck with that

OK, 4:45 A.M.,

Just finished randomizing my Playlists and now a new day of posting begins.

It is refreshing this morning to see the front page refreshed. I Thank the Powers that be for that.

I suggested earlier in this thread that an expanded Latest Station Adds column could be better. The way I see it, this column is not so much about the stations but about seeing the tracks with their graphics. Those graphics do attract attention. The more tracks there, the better in my opinion.

Hey Norm, yes, very cool on the refresh updating,

I have to disagree with you on the tracks though,

A lot of the artists graphics just dont pop, at all, that is one thing I learned over the years and ensured the people I worked with go out and hire a graphics specialist, for the most part that is what I do.

I have at times handled my own and do a decent enough job. I got this illustrated to me at a meeting I had with a fellow from a label he worked with when I was promoting the bluevoodoo. He brought out examples of people he represented and gave me ideas and it was great shop talk, that about 20 years ago when I was first starting out as a promotion publicist guy.

One thing I do is spend dollars getting art done up, for every single and all my albums, I want something that captures the mood and feeling of what is inside of the songs, whether instrumentals or full on production with vocals

What I do see lacking here from the majority of the artists is pretty weak graphics, most of the time their pictures, which is fine, or a photo or some sloppy looking attempt of their release. Spend time developing the art, the aspect of what is behind the story, something that reflects the mood and feeling within the art that is project outward to the people browsing around, want it to pop, so dont bring slop :) that to me is as important as all the effort and time that goes into the song.

As well, their are numerous songs that have no art at all and are just bland black black holes .

So bottom line folks, think about your graphics as much as the music, and hire a graphic artist, if you can do it yourself, then take the time to draft out an idea. go to pixlr.com with your idea and use their fonts and stuff their if you have to,. but please people if you do it yourself spend time sussing out ideas, pictures, and if you are artistic draw paint or whatever it out, scan it then use that as a template.

work your art and your other art to capture peoples attention one is as important as the other

Agree with you Bryon on your opinion about the graphics.

I remember you discussing this on another post in the past. It made sense then and still does. Shows that you know what you are talking about on that matter.

Would you agree that the column could be expanded though. Obviously not all the graphics are bad. Many get my attention.

I don't really care about graphics, myself. I surely won't pay for it. Hell, I have reached a point where the only music related thing I will spend any money on is strings. Period. My recording "studio" is a little hand-held Sony digital voice recorder. No way am I sinking another dime into this sh*t! :D

I have to look again, I think the layout is pretty decent. I believe it is trying to get everything into a space that is balanced and laid out well, I am doing some finalizing on a song mix for a project right now

So true Bryon, small world for Larree, yourself and myself right now. I'll give it a rest unless it's picked up by others.

Right on Bryon and Norm. If no one else comments, I will allow this thread to sink into the ether. But I do want to thank the powers that be for allowing this discussion to continue this long. IMP rocks! Later!

The biggest attraction to me when I first viewed the
IAC Music front page was the Pipeline on the Front
Page! (This was back in 2008!)

It seemed to be the best instant portal to comment
on new music, promotion and new releases that I
had seen on the internet anywhere!

After a few suspect up and downers from various
members rocking the boat, it was deemed that a
station managers approach was the best thing to
placate this vibe, but in my opinion this killed off
the creativity that the instant Pipeline Comment
page offered to this site, so I would like to see this
feature re-installed!

No Beef with the Station Managers intended, but
it is a lot of hard work to manage stations, and an
Artist is only interested in promoting their own view
of this world!

Only the brave will survive!

ROCK ON!

I concur! Let's feature the Pipeline again and allow people to go a little crazy. Bring back the old mp3bb vibe. A kinder, gentler version, of course! But hey, if it doesn't work out we can always step back from it. Let's take advantage of this golden opportunity and bring this old place back to life!

[cont.]

I would put the top pipeline posts in the kayak classics box. That would be cool. But if we did get that it would be up to us to keep it moving with positive stuff. Anyway, that would be the move. But whatever management does is cool with me right now.

Anyway, if anyone has anything positive to add please go ahead as I am going to lock this thread at some point because it is positive and cool and should remain as a reference for ideas. I'll give it a day or two. This is my last word on this thread.
