I am putting a vocal on a track for Jayson the songwriter Dyall while American Lesley Jane is arranging a track for me. Is this what indie is all about?

when it's going good for ya, yes. One time I started a contest having people produce my songs and got about 8 volunteers I took. Resulted in a CD called With A Little Help From My Peeps. A number of those songs reached #1 at mp3.com so I'd say it was pretty important for me anyway.

Francesca, I had worked with Lesley many times before,
in fact, it was at his studio in New York where I recorded my first few "solo" songs
without my band, and since I've been in Florida we had worked on several more recordings via the internet. So you will have a good production from him for sure!
And I am waiting patiently in anticipation on the song we are working on together! I am sure it will be great as well! :-)

Well I don't know about Indie in general, but this is definitely what IMP is all about. We've been so lucky to collaborate on a cover of Bryon Tossof's "It's Time" with the fabulous Duane Flock, had an amazing experience covering Chandra Moon's beautiful tune "Easy" for Richard Scotti's Under the Covers Station and had the total trip of one of our songs being covered by Two Silo Complex - "Lime Translucent "...
Looking forward to what you guys all come up with!

Hello there my friend across the Atlantic.
I believe I heard my name mentioned.
Well as a matter of fact things are coming along well.
Our version (you and I) is amazing.
Should be soon now.
Maybe tomorrow...
I will send you various mp3s then as well.
Lovely working with you and I hope we do it again soon, Francesca.
E me tomorrow and I'll tell you about the production, answer all questions, etc...
I love our record.

What IS Indie Music all about?
Now that you bring up that little subject, I've been wondering that for some time.
Maybe, it's about whatever We The Artists Decide it is about....
maybe that's the ultimate zen riddle of it. I dunno, I just work here.

Coffee...
Must... have... more... coffee....
8:55 am, NYC....
Whosa whassa where?
(I go through this every morning....
Where am I? Still not abducted by space aliens yet? Should I put
a sign on the roof? "Hi, we're all bonky starkers mad here, abduct me straightaway")
I took a long time with this one. I had to. Wanted it Just Right.
Thought I had it after two days solid work on it. Wasn't taking chances.
Listened to it a hundred times. That's a shy estimate. It was actually more.
Then I went back and tweaked various tweakables till I heard her sing even more.
What a voice.
I'm honored to get to unveil this.
This is always going to be one of my all time favorite records I ever made now.
Oh, I'm sorry.
Who are all of you and what are you doing in my living room?

---- Updated 6/13/2016 7:16:33 AM
I'm reasonably sure I can and let's not push it.
One thing at a time.
I am awake. Once again born to a barren world with very odd things happening.
All around.
Is it any wonder I don't go outside but for the Solstice
and Thank Heavens THAT'S only twice a year.
Well, this is a marvelous moment...
pardon me if I drag it out a bit....
I want to be absolutely sure....
It's betterer and betterer and I wanna keep it that way.
So, I'm gonna listen to it over and over and over and over and over again
some more....
Just to make sure.
Look, itshe is not happy about this, she's going 'wha??? you bloody wanker!'
Look, it took me, seriously, about a hundred odd (really, more than a hundred
I'm sure of it) listens, to determine, that it was close, but it wasn't to where
it should be yet... so I went back, made sure to bring her voice out.
She has an incredible voice.
You ever hear people say,
"Oh, she has a voice like an angel!"
Yeah?
This one has a voice that angels go
"Whoa"
Yes she is, which is why I was happy to work with her.
This began, with I was simply going to do some tracks for her.
In the beginning, she was unable to email me any mp3s.
For some reason, it wasn't connecting.
Intrepid soul that she is though she quickly came up
with a way to send me the actual wav files...
Through a process apparently involving Google...
Goodness, what don't they do.
Well in the course of the delay,
I asked Francesca if she'd mind me doing a version of her song.
Naive State Of Mind, is the one, in case you're wondering.
I was delighted to hear her say yes, she was indeed amenable to that.
It was about then that she came up with the way to get a wav file to me,
or me to a place where it was, then I download it, whatever, it worked finally.
Vouveray and Eureka.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the puddle...
"My God, he's this meandering blabbermouth right on stage, fascinating...."
Pardon... yes, she just met me.
You all already knew that.
Anyway...
Wow. Yeah.
This is so incredible, this record,
I just wanna make sure, it's just absolute perfecto.
There's only one first impression,
and I want this to be impeccable.
Therefore I need to evaluate this magical thing further.
It'll be soon, I promise.
Shhhh!
Concentratin'.
See.
Much Much Much Love,
and you do know I love you Darling.... Darlings I should say, all of you.
Alright.
and still I have coffee?
Maybe this day won't be awful after all.
Okay, back to the board.
I vill be sure.
Yah, I vil, I vil.
A Star Is Born,
and lucky me has her up on my shoulders,
I could get to like this.
heh.

Okay, at least that, Yes, Agreed.
That was awful... you start telling the story, and then what?
Brain wandered off did it?
Actually yes, Dear.
Exactly that. Happens all the time.
So... she sends me wav files of her vocals,
because now the idea is, can I somehow get her voice
onto the version I am doing?
I say sure. How hard can it be.
Okay it was a bit of a challenge as there were
differences in stuff like, meter, pitch, tempo, no biggie...
nothing I can't handle presently.
It was a challenge, but when I was done,
there we were. Like we'd been there forever.
So, she's on it, and I'm on it...
She'll probably put out a version just of her, I'm certainly going
to send her the tracks when the time comes...
I will always love this version though, and yes, it's probably ready,
I just won't mess this one up. Nope. I won't do it. I'm not budgin'.
I'm gonna be absolutely completely sure.
Meanwhile, go listen to her original voice and piano version.
It's an incredible song.
Ours is also incredible, and it is similar, yet different.
Well as I said,
she is a star and she really doesn't need my shoulders to ride on.
That said,
you bet I am enjoying the moment.
Soon, Dear. Soon.
I promise.
It will be worth the wait.
Oh Yes.

@ALJ ~ Have you or the folks you produce use sites like Hightail.com for sending large aif or wav files?
Can't wait to hear the song!
Are you adding tracks to her original piano/vocal ala what Jeff Lynne did with Lennon on Free As A Bird or are you creating a whole new music template with her original vocal tracks flown in?
|
|
|
6/13/2016 8:44:35 AM
Yes, Scott. I shall try not to do that.
I am naturally ebullient, I mean nothing by it.
Anyway, no Richard,
I was not able to add tracks to what she did,
as she free styled it with simply piano and voice...
...there was no set tempo to lock in with,
which becomes pretty obvious with a whole ensemble...
Basically I listened to her original version about a hundred times.
Then I hit the studio,
and followed my musical intuition,
by the time I was into it, she came up with some sort of Google transfer
system where she could post the wav file, and I could download it,
so I was able to basically work her vocals into my entirely new recording of it.
Okay....
Yes, I'm calm.
What I was, if you wanna know was nervous...
Sorry about that, having to wait a day.
Timing is Everything isn't it.
God Bless, Much Love, ~Lesley Jane

@ALJ ~ I'm sure it will be fantastic and totally surprising perhaps to even to the both of you! Combining 2 talents often brings a whole new 3rd element that is larger than the sum of it's parts. "Naive State Of Mind featuring Francesca Tamellini" by American Lesley Jane

Father Time
|
6/14/2016 9:34:45 AM
Well that was interesting. As a fan of both artists I was anxious to check it out. For me the quality of the song comes thru clearer with this version. Lesley brought a Phil Spector wall-of-sound, the drums added a lot. It's quite an emotional ride.

There's a history of great pop music with a female voice and big drums. The issue happening with this song is with the meshing of voices. In some ways the song doesn't make sense with a guy and girl singing and the forced blend leaves things sloppy in places.
|
|
|
6/14/2016 11:30:17 AM
---- Updated 6/14/2016 11:34:01 AM
Well,
I pretty much used to working with drums as BEATLESEX is my backing band.
I'm very much an angst driven balladeer...
it's the difference, having drums, between crying in a room
and crying in a room and knocking stuff over.
it feels better, plus you have the added benefit of people knew all the more
how upset you were.
I find our record absolutely haunting,
and mind you,
you can tell me any changes you'd like in the mix,
if you'd like to hear your voice louder still in the mix, say so, it's done.
I have you up louder than me over all and in most places yours
is the more dominant voice in the mix. Couple places I pop through...
Only say the word, and I'll change the mix to whatever you'd like to hear.
But I did work for days on this, three days actually
which is an eternity for me in terms of record making,
listened to it for countless hours to get it 'just so'....
and even so, I do not by any means mind altering the mix
if you would be that much more happy with the final product.
I thought we were amazing. I'd like to do this again. A lot.
In order for that to happen, you have to be happy with it.
So I really wanna hear about it, if there's stuff we can do to the mix
that will make you feel more 'okay' with the overall thing,
since I sense somehow you aren't sure.
But, you know, it's okay to Rock.
And this does rock, I think.
|
|
|
6/14/2016 11:32:37 AM
The sense of, I'm responding to Scott now,
the sense of the man and woman's voices both singing this, is irony...
two souls.... apart... each missing the other... each feeling abandoned....
it happens.
I think the only thing 'forced' about it, is the realization which happens in life
whether you want it to or not, and yeah I call that pretty forced at that,
that stuff doesn't always work out like you hope it does.
But this song makes perfect sense to me just as it is.
|
|
|
6/14/2016 1:21:26 PM
Well I went back and mixed it with just her voice on it, and guess what, I like it better.
So that's how it is now. It's just her voice on it. I took me off it.

I agree with Scott about the voices not meshing. The drums seem to be way too loud, especially the snare.
Overall, it was an ambitious effort and it does have a haunting quality to it but it still needs a little work.
The song itself and Francesca's vocals are terrific. But the production could use some tweaking.
The song is so intimate - it doesn't need another voice on it. Good call on that ALJ.

|
6/14/2016 5:38:15 PM
The solo vocal version is much better, I think. The single high voice against the drums really puts the desolate wintery feel into it a lot. Plus the words are much easier to understand, and Francesca was putting some wonderful emotion into the song that was getting kind of lost in the harmonies. This is what I love about the studio - there are a million possible versions. This one works for me though - well done, you guys.
|
|
|
6/15/2016 4:09:11 AM
Well you know, it is her song,
and that matters. I defaulted to her wishes.
I thought the two of us sounded good, but I was in the minority on that one.
I liked the snare too, but if she wants she can write to me
and ask for a mix with drums mixed further back, that's easy enough to do.
So now she has the mp3 for it, and perhaps she'll release it.
She also has the basic tracks. She can rerecord it if she wanted to.
It's no longer really much me to it though, so it's no longer on my site.
She's a good kid, I wish her the best.
And I'm going back to what I do best, me.
Thanks...
Maybe you like me, maybe you won't,
maybe you listen, maybe you don't....
I'm just going to do my thing, as purely me as ever, till I die.
And that's it. Ta-DA.

Sorry to say I agree with Shoe City on this one.
ALJ has done some really stellar work and I know he worked very hard on this one but it did not work for me. The solo version had an emotional feeling of isolation.

Francesca and I have spoken, and I'm happy, that she's happy with the tracks.
She'll be doing an entire new fresh vocal soon.
Yes, the song has a sense of 'isolation' to it.
It's about being abandoned. That'll happen.
If you are already dealing with feelings of isolation, be forewarned.
This Song Is VERY REAL.
But it's a Great Song, and She Sings It Marvelously.
I'm very proud to have helped her.
Thank you.

You're a veritable Music Goddess.
You make me sway and swoon to embarrassing degree, truly.
Anything you do, is bound to be fantastic.
And you did not actually sing the complete song on the version
of your song I made for you, which was terribly disappointing for me.
But then who am I.
I'm just the house Banana.
Shhhhh.... Jay's gonna come back to yell at me now that I've
admonished him for being a pushy so and so.
Let's sit back and watch the hi-jinx.

I like this song a lot. Francesca did some quality work here and ALJ (as always) has created some truly inspirational music for it. This is a great pairing of artists and styles. I like it a lot. The vocals are kind of haunting and sweet at the same time. Good job of marrying them to the production ALJ. There are a few things that I would have done diffenrently as a producer. One would be to ad some delay so that at strategic spots the voice would repeat a line like an echo. Also, a true chorus with a full vocal ensemble would possibly make the vocals in place sound less lonely. But overall, this song is quite impressive just the way it is.
Much Respect To The Artists In Involved
