Ooops! I really am tired!
I was going to make a blog entry here chatting about the nocturnal nature of the music industry and how much of a night cat I am but I accidentally pressed the 'enter' key before I had typed anything...... seriously...... kinda appropriate that I do that in such a blog entry!
I was going to go to bed two hours ago (normal time for me!!) but the Pipeline just got so damn interesting that I couldn't drag myself away!
A very tired MEOW from a tired pussycat!
I wouldn't change this lifestyle for anything though....... hmmm, well, almost anything!

Hi SP, I know the feeling I often find myself up because of music to the wee hours. Problem is I have to get up at 5.30am to go to work, I have in the past survived for a while on only a couple of hours a night. And then I'll lose a saturday with a 7 hour nap.
I wouldn't change a thing.
Cheers Mark

Yikes Mark! Up for work at 5:30am?!!! That's feline blasphemy!
Magnetfisch,
I just broke my own record....it is now 7:43pm Thursday and I didn't go to bed at all last night!
Jill,
DirgeK wasn't keeping me up but if I don't get those songs of hers mastered soon, she might keep me up!!! lol
LOL @ SuperCatNaps Hugh! Actually I do take regular naps. I have a sleep disorder called Narcolepsy. Kind of appropriate for a feline though ;-)

SP - I'm sure it's the 'work' part of Mark's post that is un-catlike. I'm afraid I have a similar dysfunction (work). Oddly enough, I go in at 5:30a as well (just in a different hemisphere). However, I tend to get up around midnight, so I can do some puttering around the home studio. I find I can get more done, in that vein during the wee hours, where I'm less likely to be interrupted or distracted. I DO have some catlike tendencies- I stalk the night, and I sleep during the day.

Chris,
There's actually a pretty accurate de_scription of Narcolepsy in the Wiki HERE

I didn't misspell 'de_scription' either. I think there's something in the pipeline code that prevents the use of Java by putting underscores before the word '_script'......
let's check.....This probably won't work and will most likely display as gibberish. It is the word __script in HTML ....

Mark - Fortunately, I can always go in a little late. I work as an assistant to the Chief Engineer at a small market television broadcast station in a VERY small Texas town (there are some things in Texas that aren't huge). Besides, if anything really important was going on at the station, they'd call me in. Luckily, I tend to wrap up my studio-izing about an hour before I have to go in. This gives me time to wrap up the loose ends, and clean myself up. Also, the rest of the station office staff (including my 'boss') don't get in until 9a.

---- Updated 3/8/2008 11:06:15 AM
Chris,
I went through a period of trying various prescr!ption 'remedies' including Dexamphetamine (speed), Ritalin and anti-depressants (sheesh).
Understandably, these all had side effects and they were significantly worse to endure than falling asleep!
After much frustration, I decided to do some research into what I could do to help myself. That is what got me into weight training and healthy nutrition. I studied these topics with much enthusiasm and formulated a plan that is working for me far better than anything else I have tried. The bonus is that being fit and healthy also boosts my creativity.
Narcolepsy is actually more of a gift these days. Many of my songs are inspired by the exceptionally vivid dreams I experience both at night and during some daytime sleep episodes. It has also taken me out of the 9 - 5 routine jobs that I hated and thrown me head first into a life of music and creation which I absolutely love.
Steve,
I'd love to hear more about your work in TV broadcast. That is an area I have significant interest in :-)

Thats good that you have taught yourself the ins and outs and how to "self treat" the condition,
I cant remember the last time I slept right through, I have as most peeps know here had a number of health and social problems over the 10 years I have lived here, and I'm really living a day 2 day thing,
So last spring I'd had enough, and asked the GP for sleeping pills,
He gave me a months worth, and I checked with an independant and they were the proper strong ones, but the harrassment I was getting from the folks next door was so bad that the pills had little fx.
That neighbor problem is resolved though, and as I am too disabled to have to work, I get to grab the necessary 40 winks ne time, so I dont let it worry me too much, :)

SP - I think it's great that you developed a more holistic approach to your narcolepsy. I went through a period where I indulged in a bit of amphetamine use (without a pre_scription, I'm afraid). I managed to get a lot done, not sleeping for days at a time, but it played hell with the noggin. As far as the small-market broadcast station business goes; it's fairly interesting. Trying to transmit two different channels (we're a CBS affiliate and a CW broadcaster) without much of a budget to speak of, can be an exercise in creative engineering. Right now, we're in the process of converting from standard definition to high definition (which is mandated by Feb. 2009). We've gone digital in everything but the format for delivering the local news, which should go to HD digital withing the next few months. The learning curve keeps me sharp (hopefully).

Chris,
It looks like we have something other than music in common. Great to hear you are taking a positive view of things too :-)
Steve,
It must be pretty full on for a small station to be going digital HD. That gear is sooooo expensive. One of my colleagues just went HD and each of his new Panasonic HD camera's are around the $160,000 mark!! Then there's the edit suites (Dual quad core Xeons) with the HUGE multi Terrabyte raid arrays for uncompressed HD editing. That stuff is SERIOUS!
Magnetfisch,
Cool Depeche Mode lyrics! VERY appropriate.
Vincenzo,
Three days straight!!! No wonder your left finger was doing it's own thing! What was the code you were writing?
The Black Orchids,
Thanks heaps for your comments on 'Outburst'. :-)
I am listening to your tunes now and am up to 'All I Ever Wanted' and am LOVING it! You guys remind me a lot of classic Aussie rock band, The Divinyls.
I REALLY want to add at least one of your songs to one of my stations but there's just one thing stopping me. Your mastering engineer has fallen victim to the insane loudness wars and your tracks are too loud! This also kills the punch in a mix too. Your tracks would have a MUCH greater 'thump in the chest' effect when cranked up if they were significantly less compressed.
Steve (again!!),
Ouija Board days!! Cool. I remember messing about with those things when I was younger and scaring the living shit out of myself!!
In more recent times, I have used a tool called a 'Pathfinder' which is a similar concept to a Ouija Board but is based on Native American principles. I have a friend who is a Shaman who conducts 'Pathfinder' ceremonies and they are very enlightening and powerful.

SP- Yeah, we're looking into the Panasonic P2 series of gear to upgrade our news department. It's a little 'cheaper' than the full-blown stuff, but still has a lot of capabilities. We had the Panasonic reps in, just last week.
Also, I used to scare the bejeebers(?) out of my little sister by steering the Ouija 'pointer', with my eyes slightly open. I gave that business up, though. Incidentally, I spent a couple of weeks at an 'Indian' reservation in Arizona, when I was around 14. It changed my entire outlook on a lot of things.
