Getting back to the roots of it all
Over the past few months, I have been regularly and almost obsessively checking the charts and where my songs and stations are placing here on IAC.... and it has been fun.....but......
.....I have been forgetting what this is really all about.... THE MUSIC. At the end of the day, it is fun to have songs topping the charts and stations doing the same but it has distracted me from the real essence of the indie scene.
We are here because we are passionate and creative musicians. I'll still check the charts out of curiosity but I am changing my focus back to the music, not the statistics.
My newest station may never reach the top of the station charts (but it might too) but I really don't care where it sits. I am having loads of fun with it and that is what matters.
Some of the music is VERY raw and has been recorded on cassette and some is more 'produced' but it is ALL music I enjoy listening to because it has soul and moves me. Chances are that it will move others for the same reasons too.
If you are curious, you can find this new experimental station of mine RIGHT HERE.
Anyway, I digress. Time for me to lighten up a bit with my chart obsessions and have a little fun :)

I've been here over two years and only one of my stations made it inside of 25. None of my tunes has ever made it into the top 50. But I don't care! I make my stations mostly for me to listen to and enjoy. If other people enjoy them, then that makes me happy too. I don't push my tunes on peoples pages because I want to see how well they do on merit and quality. Out of 37,000 songs, I average between 2,000 - 6,000 overall. I'm very happy!
People here all have an open mind and respect each others work. The wide range of styles and artistic measure is phenominal!! If I didn't have a day-job, I'd probably be here all day and jammin' half the night. (Retirement Goal) Heehee
BTW....... I read on another thread about your "Dream" and I'm taking a step in that direction also. I usually play live with the cover band I'm in, but May 9th I'm going Solo! I'm doing a one hour show at the Concord Hilton, just me and my AE Carvin. All Originals Too!! My recorder is simple and "portable". Maybe I can get a live recording for your new station.................

Definitely, SP, give up the chart fetish, I approve a hundred percent - I suffered from that particular illness for a spell and it's just a drain of time and energy...

I think I came here about 2 years ago (I can't remember how or when) and I originally thought that the IAC charts were more important than I think they are now. I'm not saying that they are unimportant but rather that they are less well known outside IAC than I initially thought. They are of course a thermometer of the popularity of a song or station among IAC members and part of the structure which results in KIAC awards within the community (or company of artists).
I've had the satisfaction of a #1 for many weeks and several top 5 songs and my station in the top 25, but now I rarely check out chart positions. As others have already posted - It's easy to become over focussed on such statistics.
Stations are much more interesting to spend time doing imo. Although I much prefer the 'polished' sound to the 'raw' sound, I DO recognise and appreciate that Soul can exist in either - It's just my personal preference and not a put-down.
Lots of time and effort are involved in maintaining a Station and I do think it's much better for the Station Master/Mistress to write something about a selected song (As SuperPuss does) :-).

Cheers guys :-)
Duane, keep that dream alive my friend!!! ....and I'd LOVE to hear your live recordings of your solo gig. That would be purrfect for the Feline Underground. Good luck with it :)
Larree and Hugo, I'm free at last!!!! :-D
LOL about the tag Red. I've done that numerous times in other people's blogs. I tried to edit your post and fix the tag but I can only edit my own posts or delete other people's.
I hear you on the production side of things too and, as you are probably aware, I am very passionate about getting the very best sound and production quality I can. My new Feline Underground station is simply a way for me to expand my horizons and listen to music I would otherwise dismiss.
In the process, I am actually discovering some real gems and am thoroughly enjoying the process. I even did something I wouldn't normally do and uploaded a raw rehearsal room recording done with a pair of mics hung over a mic stand and plugged into my minidisc recorder. Even with that though, I went for the best quality I could get but the point was to capture the moment without having to think about the production and engineering.
If you haven't already, have a listen to F-Spot on my page. That's the recording I am talking about. :)
