Met Gavin Harrison from Porcupine Tree today :)
.....at a drum clinic I did tonight as part of the Music Den's Drumania. He is an awesome drummer and the clinic inspired me to play around more with poly-rhythms which I find fascinating.
I also took the opportunity to get some cool photo's and had a chat to him afterwards about RotoToms......and that lead me to take the plunge and buy a set right there on the spot!!! He autographed them for me too which was cool :)
I have uploaded some of the photo's I took tonight to my forum HERE
Here's a pic of Gavin and I with one of my new RotoToms...

That's so cool, Ti! Gavin's a killer drummer, with a great feel for polyr-rythms. I had a drummer who used RotoToms, exclusively, and I still like the sound of them. I think they would enhance the electronic drums you're already using (I saw the recent pic of your kit, btw- I can picture the gong 'round back- VERY nice!).

Cheers guys. Tonight was a VERY inspiring night!! I even managed to place some advertisements with a few key people for a lead singer for SuperPuss too. It is all happening. I can FEEL it :)
Steve, I bought a copy of Gavin's 'Rhythmic Horizons' DVD while I was there tonight and have just watched some of it and I am just blown away by how natural he makes odd time signatures like 7/8 and 19/8 sound and I'm LOVING the Overriding concept (for example, playing 7/8 on the snare and kick with regular 16ths on the hihat). That makes more intricate time signatures more accessible to the listener.
He explained these concepts during the clinic and played some examples so it is cool to have the information on DVD where I can watch it and try things on my kit at my leisure.
I'm probably going to add some triggers to my RotoToms too but I also want to keep their acoustic playability too. I just LOVE the sound of Roto's.
I've added the gong to my kit now too and that is FUN. I'll have some new photo's of it to upload as soon as the rest of my cage parts arrive (hopefully this week) and will film a new video clip.

Sounds like you might enjoy a visit to Mr. Aven's page, with a special focus on time signatures...to us 4/4 kinda guyz it always sounds like the world is spinning off-kilter, but somehow it fails to explode...lol...I can listen, but it's real hard to play along...
Rock on!

Cool - Gavin is indeed one of the best out there, and is also now a full fledged member of King Crimson. You gotta be good to play in that legendary collective. I hope he has time for both - I'd love to hear him in KC but not at the expense of PT!
