*** To solo, or not to solo? Hugo, Dick Aven? ***
That is a question I am pondering at the moment.
I had originally planned (and written) lyrics to my new song Remember but decided yesterday that the lyrics no longer fit my journey in life, nor do they really fit the song so I opted to leave them out and upload the track as an instrumental.
However, I am now pondering whether or not to add one or more solos to some parts of it. I am also pondering inviting a couple of guests to add their touch with a solo or two. Hugo and Dick Aven are the two I have in mind. Are you interested guys?
What does everyone think? Leave the track as is or add solos? I'm probably leaning more towards adding the solos but am keen to hear what others here think.

Do you think solos will add anything to the final product?
To me, the point of a solo is to take a song to a higher place, to bring it somewhere that it was reaching toward; that, along with a killer hook, gives it that final push.
From what you have recorded already, it certainly sounds like a progression that would accommodate a solo. But, what instrument? Is guitar necessarily your best choice? Another instrument like a horn or synthesizer might give it a left-field twist that wakes up the listener and makes them really take notice!
Again, these are all choices that you have to make.
And, I've posted about this before, but it seems like a perfect opportunity to consult and ponder some sort of Oblique Strategies.
Just draw a card and address the question or statement that it poses.
They're very open-ended questions and statements, so take it any way you want.
My 2¢.

Thanks for the Oblique Strategies link Todd.... It came up with 'Emphasise Repetitions'.... interesting...
I am thinking of doing this semi jazz style (consecutive solos) with a guitar solo (Hugo), a sax solo (Dick Aven), a synth solo (me) and maybe something else.
The solo's would go in the longer parts (they were to be the verses) with one or two verses being solo free. There's a verse about three quarters through which I'd like to leave solo free because I like what happened on piano in that one (a moment of magic in the room).
This entire track was conceived from a single take and was mostly improvised (the piano and guitar parts were the original parts and I added bass and drums later) so the solo idea seems to fit for that reason too.

I like the idea of the consecutive solos on different instruments!
And, how about seeing if you can build those "solos" into a hook for the song?
Start each solo with the same melody> Each time, a different instrument takes the melody, repeats it, and then goes on a short improv based upon that melody, then ends the solo with the same melody that it began with.
A way of driving home that hook, while still throwing the listener a little curveball.
(I'm all about curveballs.)
Also seems to be a good way of "emphasizing the repetition".
But this is your song.
Take it where you want to take it!
Just my thoughts.
Sorry if I overstepped.

You're not overstepping at all Todd. That's a pretty cool idea and could work well. The hook would need to be quite short though because the verses are not as long as most jazz style solos tend to be.
That would work though because a short hook is usually the best and easiest to 'Remember' :-)

Why not get someone like Mister April to write some new lyrics if you want a different perspective? Not that I wouldnt like to hear a little of Sir Hugo's sweet sound and Dick's might horn getting involved.......... hell, I wouldnt mind a widdle along with those 2 myself......I gots a sensitive side too y'know ; )

I enjoyed a listen to that tune just this morning, Titania - I'd be glad to add some noise to it (that's the technical term for what I do in the studio). If you e-mail me an mp3 I'll add some stuff and send you a .wav file - you can edit as you like.
Raaaaaaaawk!

....
Not directly on topic, but you haven't answered my email about my 'version' of "Goblins" - Any reason?
Perhaps it just slipped through your net and got forgotten.
Good to see you active.
Robin :)

Eaglehead,
I'd still like to keep this one an instrumental but I'd be delighted for you to have some musical soloing input :-)
Hugo,
Glad you're keen to add some of your 'noise'!! :-)
I've uploaded the mp3 to my server and will send you the link via email.
Red,
Sorry about the delay getting back to you. I'll reply to your email today.
Mr Eagle and Mr Hugo,
Can you both send me an email to
info (at) superpuss (dot) net
I'll then send you the link to the mp3 file.
If either of you have Dick Aven's email addy, can you send him an email and let him know about this. I posted a message on his artist page but not sure how often he checks it.

Cool stuff Dick... I understand exactly where you are coming from with things to do. This week and last week has been the same for me.
I have sent the link to Chris from Eaglehead so I am sure either he or Hugo can forward on the details.
I'm REALLY looking forward to hearing your sax on this track. :-)

Got your sax part today Dick and LOVE it. Coooooool stuff. :-D
I have added everyone's parts now and almost finished the final mix. The only thing left to do is add a keyboard solo or two and then upload the track.
Chris, Hugo and Dick... you guys absolutely ROCK! It has been a real honour working with you all on this collaboration.
I can't wait to get this one online!
