Serious Music ? does it mean anything?
Is serious music a myth ? is not popular music serious ?

serious = dignified, grave, grim, humourless, sedate, sober, solemn, thoughtful, deep earnest, heavy, intellectual, profound. It can also mean, nasty, shocking, awful, dangerous OR careful, committed and conscientious. The opposite is cheerful and trivial. I think I was making a point here but I've ended up in a cul de sac again.....Oh I know, I think I should be more popular - :)

But the question is that popular music can be all that you define as serious . Is the category of serious music a myth ? I know that to make a quartet is not as easy as to write a pop tune but .... does it mean that one is more musical than the other?
I don´t think so

No, serious music is not a myth but I think it's more dependent on the lyrics.
Here's a serious song for ya. It's deadly serious, no way it's not.

Are you serious?! it depends how the listener interprets it. Just think of all the songs that were misunderstood. The 'Paul Is Dead' controversy comes to mind. Many find a minor key being more 'serious' than a song written in a major key, I don't.

I mean serious music ( symphonic works, quartets, sonatas, electroacoustic works ) and pop music . Are they really so different ?

Minor and Major keys are not sad or triumphant , but some composers give a color or meaning to them .

The keys themselves are the color, the composer just arranges the notes within them..

I think "serious" music is anything hardcore or direct be it, melody, lyrics, or both. "Serious" music is full of passion or unscores (or provokes) belief(s) or quest for understanding. And so with that said I belief any music can be interpreted as serious because music implies a point of view.

I don't think that serious is a matter of style. Serious is a question of intent. A string quartet is not necessarily serious (listen to early Haydn for example). A rock song can certainly be serious.
It's not so much how you say it but rather what you say. I don't like making judgements about intentions myself.

Ahh...so the question is really about THE NATURE OF GENRES...?
I don't understand most "genres". Lately I've taken to adding songs under "no genre", though I have an irrational desire for all of my own songs to be "alternative, retro & psychedelic" (they're NOT!)...
BUT...
...let's face it...serious or comic...certain genres are hugely informative..."jazz"..."instrumental"...c"rap"...oops - sorry for the typo...I'm sure I'll regret it in the morning...

You can laugh while being serious, like Buster Keaton
