Hugo to Los Angeles in April
I'll try this one more time in case any of you hip west coast folks missed the news - I'll be on a working trip to LA especially to work up some live duets with everybody's favorite Dick and although it's going to be a busy busy week would certainly enjoy the chance to meet some fellow IACers...so if we haven't talked already, please give a shout and we'll see if we can make it happen.

I keep threatning to go down to L.A. and hook-up with Larree, but I think he doesn't give a shit cause he never replies to me.
If I know exactly what few days you'll be down there, I will TRY to get out of work for a day or so (preferably a Monday or a Friday). I have in-laws I can stay with overnight. I can bring a couple of Axes/Mando. Takes about a six hour drive.

Let me know,
Duane

Hi, Jeff! Thanks for your enthusiasm!

This is going to be a working trip and our primary activity is going to be developing an original set of live duets. Dick and I will be immersing ourselves in that effort but I don't make it so far from home too often so I was hoping maybe we could round up some locals for a happenin' lunch or dinner or such - probably not more than a couple of hours, but a chance to meet some online folks in the real world. Maybe the best thing to do is for anybody who's interested to send me an e-mail (please use the ArtistMail link at my page) with phone number (mobile probably best) and we can see if it'll work when I'm out there.

Rock on!
:)

Hugo should be hungry and back home eating a Philly cheese steak soon if not already. I dropped him off at LAX shortly after noon. I noticed later that he had left his sandwich in my 'fridge.

We actually stuck to our plan and worked on duet possibilities. We recorded six of them (three covers and thee originals) and worked on a few more as well.
It was oddly liberating to limit ourselves to the reality of being able to perform the songs live. A couple of times we were tempted to overdub another part to a song but refrained from it. I've played in a number of quite good live duos. Hugo is a very versatile and talented duo partner.

My family was excited to see him. The morning after his arrival my wife and kids went to England and got back just in time to hang with Uncle Hugh for one evening and a morning. He gave them chocolates and ice cream and a lucky elephant vase with bamboo plants growing in it.

Meeting Larree and jamming with him was an early highlight of the week. I wish we could have hung out again..... Maybe next time we'll all get to the beach with our ukuleles and bongos.

Ha! Jet-setting indie artists! Right on!
I mixed one more tune last night making a total of seven. This one is a song by Hugo. I sent it to him. Perhaps he will post it.......

Just posted WE CANNOT HAVE TOMORROW on my page...it features Dick on baritone sax and I'm handling acoustic guitar and vocal duties...it was a fun exercise working up duets that we could manage in a live setting - going for the "less is more" vibe is a rewarding bit of mental work and helps one get to the heart of a song...

Despite being immersed in the music we did have fun hooking up with Larree and I also had the chance to meet up with two former bandmates I hadn't seen in years. I even stopped by the L.A. music stores and particularly enjoyed test-driving an amp a friend is considering - it was the Mesa Boogie Express 5-50 and if I hadn't been so focused on Fender and Vox amps when I bought my Vox AC-30 I might just have gone with it. I especially liked the 2-channel approach, which would be great for live situations...had a narrow miss with a couple of other IACers and would have enjoyed meeting others, maybe next time...

It's Tax Day in the U.S. But I'll just bite my tongue about that.

Thanks to Clan Aven for the hospitality and the duet recordings...

Rock on!
H
