You want the other one I think

I didn't know this one so it was interesting for a couple of reasons. This is observational in a similar way to Waterloo Sunset but without the insider perspective that had maybe, after all he said he'd only spent two weeks in Hollywood :) The melody is quite predictable but somehow because it's the Kinks you feel yourself opening up to it and falling for it's charm

Full of heart and charm which is pretty much a staple
for The Kinks...and simple truths also...the subtle beauty
and hint of tragic circumstance, told from an observers or
(tourist/fan's) point of view as they stroll down the famous
boulevard immediately appealed to me. I especially love the
way the song is sang with such a vibrant introspection of
everyone's life, including Davies own and the danger of the
pitfalls of 'fame'...yet , still....the fantasy is alive as the song
slows down like the amazed awe of a movie-goer and Davies,
gently lost in film-fantasy, proclaims his desire to join the
'Celluloid Heroes who never feel any pain and never really die'
Subtlety brilliant and written with the heart of a true escapist
and cinema lover. I also like his choice of off-beat movie stars
who are portrayed in the song, instead of choosing favorites who
everyone knows like Marilyn Monroe...eeegadds!!...that would've
ruined the song....heh

You've nailed it for me there Larry-thanks so much for sharing.....His songs have so much compassion and beauty..Brilliant,brilliant song and performance here too-Magical-effortlessly transcendent..

I think it was a real blessing that ironically they were denied a visa to tour in the U.S 'the land of dreams' for so long -as it helped Davies develop his unique artistic visions.
He wouldn't've been the same artist if they had imo..

I have a live version of this song, with Ray being backed by Kinks-worshipers Yo La Tengo (who happen to be another one of my favorite bands).

And yeah, it's a great, if overlooked song.
Like many of Ray's songs.

As a teenager in a band with a couple of 30 year olds (decades ago) I was introduced to a few Kinks tunes we covered, and which I really dug. But somehow I never ventured any further into their catalog until last spring, when a friend expressed his Kinks fetish and I figured I should check it out. I'd recommend the 2-cd set I got (44 songs!!!) for anybody looking to economically score a bunch of great kinksy tunes: "KINKS the ultimate collection"...two of my faves happen to be back to back on this set: "Dedicated Follower of Fashion" and "Sunny Afternoon" - I'm most drawn to the cynical ones...thanks for the video link, LWJ...off to view now...

Thanks to everybody for commenting. This is one of those songs
that always gives me a sense of warmth and the 'light tingles' up
the spine...effects of any great song for me. Thanks too for the info
about the 'visa' Steve...I never knew about that. I know The Kinks are
one of your influences and much of your's and April's writing makes it
apparent and on the same level. Thanks for the cd tip also Hugh. :)

I'd forgotten about this one Larry (though I used to live half a half block from Hollywood Beloved)... But Jilly reminded me of Waterloo Sunset, which is one of my very favorite Kinks tunes (among many) and that made me give that another listen too... Thanks to both of you.
Glenn
