figured everyone knew this, but it should be known that this is an older Neil Young
song....the above clip is from a Curt Cobain tribute show. Not sure exactly who
the song was written about...think it was for a chap in one of his earlier bands
who died from drugs....used to know his name, but it escapes my memory now...
was just reflective about the sadness of the struggles of loved ones and 'The
Needle And The Damage Done' by Neil Young immediately came to mind. Always
loved the song and played it many times, cuz like he sez; "a little part of it in
everyone"...ain't that the truth. Here he is playin it around the time he wrote it.

A pair of steady hands, the voice of an angel, and an important message...all in all, amazing.

It occurs to me that we probably have many songs of similar intent on this site...HERE'S ONE that I like...

I've known so many artists and friends who have battled with serious addictions over the years. Fortunately most of them are still alive and have learned to manage them.. for others today in modern medicine, the pharmaceuticals drugs take ground for propertied afflictions of every kind.. masking the symptoms unfortunately rather than dealing the real source.. usually stems from the lack of love they feel.. Hugh, I think that's why your song Our Love has a message that speaks to everyone, however they may interpet their love to be.

I believe this song was written about Neil's bandmate in Crazy Horse, the late great Danny Whitten, who is most well known for writing the song I Don't Wanna Talk About It. In case you're interested, Neil has several full records that are involving this subject matter. One is called Tonight's the Night, which was recorded on full moon nights with the band and Neil really, really drunk. The title cut is about a roadie they had, one of the guys who would tune the guitars named Bruce Berry. Bruce Berry was a workin' man, he used to load that econoline van. A sparkle was in his eye but his life was in his hands.

On that same record, there's a version of Crazy Horse doing C'mon Baby Let's Go Downtown with Whitten singing, it's kind of haunting.

Neil also put out a record after Cobain's death called Sleeps With Angels. Cobain left something in his so-called suicide note about Neil being right that it's better to burn out than it is to rust, I think Neil was really troubled by that. On the other hand Lennon also commented on the same song (from Rust Never Sleeps) saying that he didn't go along with that, that he disagreed.

Crosby, mentioned by Beth, is one of my personal heroes along with Neil, and yes, he basically destroyed himself with drugs but with the help of a new liver, is still making music, and on a good night, can easily outsing all of us.

I have friends in the indie community who are still fighting addiction every day of their lives. If you've never known somebody who is truly in the grasp of hard drugs, consider yourself fortunate because it tears at your very soul to witness these things.

That reminds me of a documentary I saw recently about drugs over the years, and how that's evolved culturally. The 60's saw Vietnam soldier's returning as addicts to hard drugs, then filtering through the major cities. It wasn't until the late 80's these addictions became unfashionable, perhaps not driven purely by fad, I think it took that long for people to heal from the "damage done", years prior. The documentary ended with pharmaceuticals being the next form of abuse... only this time round it's prescribed as something we need, combined with fear factors put upon the world - it's scary stuff to know how people are being manipulated, but it doesn't have to be that way, if people don't buy into it.

Thats it. Thanx for all the info FT. Nice to know another N Young listener among
us who knows history. Another song I like was panned by all the critic's from an
album called 'Time Fades Away'..once again dealing with drug abuse. I wonder if
this dark period was stemming from Whitten's death? I always liked Young when he was 'stark'...like 'On The Beach'....another album panned by critics which was
haunting and stark. I guess what i liked about 'Time Fades Away' was the fact that
he probably didn't give a f**k and possibly taking the cue from Dylan, kept it raw
and loose. As a matter of fact, Nirvana has always been identified as bein the one's
who spear-headed the 'alternative music' scene, but I say it was Young; who never
fit neatly into any category and completely went his own way, so it really doesn't
surprise me that the two became inexplicably entwined in the falling card-house
of shaky Rock-N-Roll, where nothing is guaranteed...not even self-fulfillment....
Anyway....here is the song dealing with the desolate feelings of drug abandonment
by Mr Young.....

Fourteen junkies too weak to work
One sells diamonds for what they're worth
Down on pain street, disappointment lurks
Son, don't be home too late.
Try to get back by eight
Son, don't wait till the break of day
'Cause you know how time fades away.
Time fades away
You know how time fades away.

All day presidents look out windows
All night sentries watch the moonglow
All are waiting till the time is right
Son, don't be home too late
Try to get back by eight
Son, don't wait till the break of day
'Cause you know how time fades away.
Time fades away
You know how time fades away.

Back in Canada I spent my days
Riding subways through a haze
I was handcuffed, I was born & raised
Son, don't be home too late
Try to get back by eight
Son, don't wait till the break of day
'Cause you know how time fades away.
Time fades away
You know how time fades away.

Thirteen junkies too weak to work
One sells diamonds for what they're worth
Down on pain street disappointment lurks.
Son, don't be home too late
Try to get back by eight, eight
Son, don't wait till the break of day
'Cause you know how time fades away.
Time fades away
You know how time fades away.

Time fades away
You know how time fades away

(song and lyrics by Neil Young)
