Is "Indie" a music Genre or a Movement?....
The English dictionary states it's an artist or label not belonging to or affiliated with a major record company. But has it also become a type of sound? One which can be applied across a number of genres.

Red - looking at the front page here I'd say it looks like a movement!!!
Not constant but evolving!!!
From our previous post about the future....
"However, real growth potential lies in the niche networks - those based on a particular lifestyle or interest, such as travel, music, wealth or business," he added.

I always find it somewhat silly, these sites that list "indie" as a genre. To me that's just that they don't understand the meaning of the word.
A lot of indie music is alternative rock. but to say that an independent classical or country release is not in the indie genre, that's just not really true.

It's one of the words that get's used in many different ways.
I think it's used as a genre de_scription because the term was popularised by alternative rock labels. But then it's a movement to those who hold their independance dear, and then again it's a status, if you haven't got a contract with a 'major' label then you are by default 'indie'.
Where the line between indie and major is drawn I don't know, but if any label offered me a contract (on reasonable terms) I'd take it :-) Major, Minor, indie or other. But I'd want to keep as much musical control as possible so at that level I'd want stay indie. Well I'm dreaming anyway there arn't any 'major' blues labels anyway...

Hello
I always thought it was a genre until I came here and realised it stood for independent. I always thought it was a very broad term too, as there were so many different styles being played under the Indie banner. I think it's a movement.
But can anyone help with another genre that has sprung to my attention. EMO. What are the criteria for a song to fit this genre, and what does it stand for?
Cheers Mark

It stands for music that is strong in self pity.

"A type of sound" Yes I believe the type to which every artist aspires to is that of "their own". Not accepted or denied by corporate labels looking at the bottom dollar. But presented to the listener. Choice is powerful and how many times have we started not liking something...and then our minds open and we surprise ourselves@!

a label to describe a movement----
which later became a genre---
as in, recorded by the Artist and friends in a time and place of their choosing, which did not involve going cap-in -hand to any third party, and asking---------------------- "Is this OK?"
