Humans are confused because they are too smart to keep things simple.
The more they evolve the more intelligent they get. The more intelligent they get the more complex things are. The more complex things are the more lives are filled with confusion. Since happiness is often found in simplicity, the final conclusion is that evolution is actually moving towards less happiness as a species.
Lobotomy anyone?

"It is an important and popular fact that things are not always what they seem. For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much -- the wheel, New York, wars and so on -- whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man -- for precisely the same reasons."
Douglas Adams
I've always enjoyed that quote.

Have you checked out any of "Last Chance to See", about endangered species? I haven't gotten a copy yet, but I've read passages that are amazing. His writing style is incredible. He also wrote a really odd detective series.

I tend to separate out intellectual ability from being "smart". I don't see the two as one in the same. In this light, I would say that sometimes humans are not smart enough to keep things simple. :-)

Oh and incidentally I don't know what is wrong with me lately. However, if you noticed I wrote "no" instead of "know". I've also been using there/their and your/you're improperly quite often. I think it's a bit ironic to mispell words when I'm speaking on "smartness" (ok that word was for fun). I think it's the weather change.

I've never read 'Last Chance to See' but I do have his detective series.... 'Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency' if I remember correctly.

Ha Ha, its just a reactive comment to something as vain as the pursuit of happiness, oh and the fact that King James did rewrite the bible in order to collect taxes............

The only true happiness is the pursuit itself.
I just made that up! The process of building, writing, painting, (fill in the blank) something brings more happiness than the end product. It's what drives us. That stupid carrot that's always just out of reach. We don't get it 'till we die so might as well enjoy the pursuit! And K.I.S.S.!

being a fish, I would tend to stay as silent as a carp on this subject 8-)
but you're right, simplicity makes us as happy as too much complexity makes us sad...
let's quote Anne Clark (Counteract)
[...]
Let's make it clear
there's no time
for placing curves on a smooth straight line
the shades of grey
only make a haze
turn a simple path
into a complex maze
