The art of doing nothing.
My theory is if you have something you want to get done and you can't seem to get started, you should just sit there in your lounge chair and act like you have all the time in the world until you literally can't stand the inactivity. Then you will arise and do your greatest work.
Another one of my theories has to do with wasting time. The best time you can have is totally wasting time, playing hooky from any responsibilites and obligations. So it turns out, if you're not wasting time, you're actually wasting time.
By writing this blog, am I wasting time properly? No, this is actually too productive. If I was typing this on my notepad and lost interest to the point where it never got posted, that would be more fun.
Of course even better than wasting time is wasting time with somebody you care about. There's a special joy in watching moments waste away together. I dream of spending every minute with the flygirl of my dreams and having to decide between progress and just savoring every second in useless bliss. We might have this important function to attend but decide to walk off the main trail and eat snowcones and watch pigeons knowing we should be somewhere else.
I wish I actually had somewhere I had to be right now, this would be more fun jerking off writing this blog, or jerking off while writing this blog. That's something I haven't tried yet but it can't be too far away. :~D.

I just wasted 5 mins reading this blog thinking that I might learn something to make the reading worthwhile. In fact I learned several things that I already knew so I suppose I didn't learn them at all did I ?
But, on second reading I knew that I would be totally wasting my time because by now I knew that I already knew these things - Mmm, maybe I will read this blog again, every time I read it I waste more time and get more fun.
What Fly has taught me, and this is new for me, is that wasting time is much more fun, not only when you do it with another timewaster, but, when you don't feel guilty about it. So I am starting a movement today called "Wasting time for time's sake" We will send really long e mails that say nothing at all except "It's great fun wasting time with you, let's do it again sometime" and if no-one replies we will spend several hours wondering why - which will be even more exciting than if they had replied. This is a great idea Fly, it's a reall win/win blog. I'd offer to be your Flygirl but I guess I'd be wasting my time....so, hey, can I be your Flygirl ? Wow I really enjoyed that, let's do it again sometime !

You can be my flygirl as long as you make sure to be around when I have things that need to get done, assuring that I get totally off the track. We can waste hours making up names for things that we aren't even that interested in, and we can even talk on the phone but only when we don't have anything to say. And when it comes time to go to sleep we can be fulfilled knowing we wasted another day slowly and recklessly. What a comforting feeling knowing there will be many more days to come when we just know we should be doing something. Just try not to regret the times where you were actually making progress in your goals, because there's no getting back time not wasted.

Definitely gonna have to learn more about wastin' time properly! Fly, you have a ZEN like I've never heard. I'm sure it makes the guilt of all the time you may have NOT wasted by reading this silly-assed blog comment, easier to bear, eh?

I just had a feeling that you were doing something important and not wasting your time properly so I thought if I wrote another post you would have to stop what you were doing to read it several times to see if there was any point made or any hidden messages that might justify you wasting your time.
So sadly I have to tell you that this post is just another boring post and the most you may get from it would be a big smile....and because I know you are smiling now I know you will soon be laughing and then you'll think "why am I laughing?" and you will realise you have just laughed at nothing ha ha how silly is that ? but what better reason to laugh heh?
Now stop laughing or they will take you to a place where all you do all day is waste your time laughing at nothing. I'm doing it
listen ..... "hahahahabwahahahahaheehee!!!! " Now I will spend several minutes contemplating whether to write a song called 'wasting time' or 'Laughing for no reason' Wow this stuff is addictive, I wish I had more time to waste, I'm really in the mood now :)

You were right, flygirl, your post did make me smile because it was so utterly impertinent. I bet you even walked away from your pc while you were writing it cause you forgot you were blogging, then came back later and said did I write this rubbish, I must finish it. :~D
What would be even better than the scenario of musicmaking you described above would be doing a song called Wasting Time and then doing 14 alternate versions. Maybe you could have a whole CD where the songs were
Wasting Time
Wasting Time part 2
Wasting Time (dance remix)
Wasting More Time
Wasting Time, do you think?
Wasting My Time
Wasting Your Time
Wasting Everybody's Time
Wasting Time (wet version)
Wasting Time (dry version)
Wasting Time (slightly moist version)
Wasting Time (doodoo version)
Wow I'm really wasting time doing this

The wasting time ensemble, from what I heard, is musicians from all over the world on 25 different tracks that address the issue: "why can't they see we're just wasting their time" -- They're all performed in a SAVE THE WORLD multi-star release style. Except that none of these musicians are ARTISTS that anybody's ever heard of, which makes the reality of the tracks even more a waste of their time.
Like Phlegm, of Conversation Suicide -- A complete & utter waste of one's time

Maybe it could be a charity event with a new cable station which played the Wasting Time anthem 24 hours a day where we could watch artists like Sting and Bono and Pink get all emotional about wasting time. Mariah Carey could add her vocal histrionics to the last note, so it sounded like
Wasting ti-i-i-i-ay-ay-ah-ya-i-i-i-ime baby
Wait I feel some lyrics coming.
There was a time
when we had time
to waste some time together
but now it seems we never
So I decided yesterday
to find some extra time
Didn't get around to it til today
By tomorrow I just may
and the big chorus
We be wastin' time
That's who we are
I wrote this song
I didn't get too far
If I finish it that would be productive so I'll stop here. :~D

well Fly, somehow in your silly, bloated blogs, during your existential moment of
mental inertia, you've touched upon an age-old concept which was adhered to by,
not only the beat poets of the 60's, but also of the music scene then...to enter
into a 'state of bliss' simply by doing nothing, thereby escaping the tedious
doldrums of social activity...i mean...how many times did one hear the song
'Feelin Groovy' and just kinda wanna snap the fingers while fully aware of the
fact that Rock-N-Roll was just a waste of good time and looked down upon by
authority..but why should you care, because it's your time to waste, and if you
wanna get wasted while wasting time, why not listen to some outlandish noise
while wasting that time?....i forget where i was going with this, but thats OK
cause, while i seem to know what i'm speaking about, in reality, i'm simply
wasting time. ...he he...

Looks like you've nearly got your OWN self-penned theme song ready - but here's one by our friend Todd that could help keep your clubhouse rockin':

I just learned how to do these links. Hope I did it right.

I was getting withdrawal symptoms because everything I've done this morning has been productive. I long to get back to my regular 2 hour indulgency of glorious idle chilling. so....
Busy doing nothing
working the whole day through
trying to find lots of things not to do
Busy doing nothing
isn't it just a crime
I'd like to be unhappy
but I never do have the time
I wish I had more time to waste but it's Hi ho hi ho off to work I go. If you're interested in what work I'm actually doing - I'm teaching children how to be 'not' like me. I wish I'd had somebody like me to teach me what I know now....on the other hand I have wasted a lot of time finding out for myself.

You should teach them to be just like you. Wouldn't life for them be quite the adventure then. :~D
I relate to your situation. Right now while I'm doing all these dull things that need to be done, I'm missing my girlfriend like crazay.

Interesting blog fly...But if we're wasting time doing nothing, nothing can be done about it.On the other hand if we're absorbed in the wasting of our time is it our time we're really wasting?
Its a quandry i've often been in as i needlessly scatter my attention span over the cause of several hours without really achieving anything. We all try our best everyday to acheive what we can-altho sometimes of course the temptation to waste time pervades everything and we have to 'heed the call' as it were..
So many seconds, minutes, hours days i've lost to forever-and the plain truth of the matter is i can't have them back.It pains me to realise this but not as much as the realisation of our inate tendency to waste time-even IF (as you point out) there's a million better more productive things to do..Or are they more productive when it really boils down to it?
I feel the latent Zen that Larry touched on is there within us all, waiting to blossom and unfold like a beautiful japanese lotus flower. That must mean then that the art of REALLY living is surely not wasting time-unless we're speaking in the purely pejorative sense of seeing things thru Gods eyes-where (of course) anything and everything could be considered a 'waste of time'.Equally of course, in that way everything could be considered totally sacred and magical-and not a wase of time at all...
At the moment i really don't know which side of the fence i'm sitting on regarding that.Which side do you sit on? I don't think its necessarily a waste of time to ponder on the big questions like this, but you could certainly waste alot of time writing about it!(haha)
Essentially-after oxygen, water and food how we deal with our time here on this planet is probarbly the most important question we could ask ourselves-and i've gotta thank you for opening up my mind in such a way (altho i know you didn't intend to)
To waste our time or not waste our time?
Is wasting our time REALLY wasting our time?
Can we live a life where altho we appear to be wasting our time to others,we're not infact wasting our time at all..
Big,BIG questions indeed......
I'm gonna

Ahhh...Mr Ison brings forth the Zen way of thinking which really addresses the
duality of this perplexing question...brought about by a measly little Fly, who in
reality, is a busy little bee-constantly starting and getting into 'all kinds of shit.' :D
Let me ask this question: Is there a 'time limit' for 'wasting time'..? Some sloths
merely sleep the day away, while many rush about to and fro wasting time...and
isn't what constitutes a 'waste of time' a matter of opinion?...don't be concerned
about your answer to these questions because you may waste your time. heh

I decided to revisit this thread because I was having thoughts about this issue yesterday. It seems I enjoy doing insignificant things with my free time because the things I care about are too important to dive into unless I'm in the exact perfect frame of mind and that is rare. Thus, progress is difficult. Maybe that's what should be on my gravestone when I die. Here Lies Fly. Progress was Difficult. :~D
The lone exception to all this is spending time with those I love, that is my first priority and I don't need to be in the exact perfect frame of mind for that, if I can open one eye and scratch myself, this suffices, I'm ready to go.
