The anatomy of a pipeline poster.
I was discussing with a friend about this issue of why some people who contribute in great ways to this scene never start topics. I find it puzzling why some of the most interesting people are willing to chime in with deep ideas often but seem like they've forbidden themselves from the proposition of putting a new idea of theirs up for all of us to ponder. Is it a self-esteem matter or stagefright, are they too lazy to think of topics or do they just not want the social burden (whatever that is) of being a topic starter?
I've noticed that the IAC staff have constantly stated here that they want non-music and personal topics, it's even in their pipeline rules. I myself don't discuss music that much cause there are usually a number of music items front and center and I'm much more interested in what makes people tick not to mention sex and sociology. :~D
So I've decided to categorize everyone just to be annoying. Of course many fit into several categories. By the way I'm not really trying to stand in judgment, most of these distinctions add to the variety and atmosphere.
Alpha poster - This person asserts him or herself by not only posting a fair share of thought out topics but often deep morsels on others' topics.
Alpha In the Shadows poster - They post a lot of interesting contributions on various topics but never or almost never put forward a new topic.
Megalo Benevolo poster - Somebody who is all over, involved on most all topics that have any room for open expression. By sheer level of involvement they help keep things rolling. They start a number of topics and usually have a lot of open affection for others here. They are a big part of the IAC fabric and help give this place it's aura.
Musico Foco poster - They both start a fair share of music topics and are always involved in music discussions but don't seem to care much about non-music matters
Non-musico Foco poster - They start a fair share of topics usually in the same area, like politics for example.
Art Expressionaries - These people offer art and poetry and elaborations on various other creative matters outside of music. There's always room for more of these people, they add a lot to the vibe I think
Irreverent Gooficus poster - These posters add a lot of levity to various topics, includes photoshop jesters and people who post contributions to topics that are wacky tangents to the subject matter, perhaps hoping to get the main strand off track.
Soapbox Churchill - Posters who come out with the occasional verbose rant that sounds like if they're not running for office, maybe they should be.
Curious George - Those who post questions, both musical informative and societal, to see what the world thinks or seeking counsel about something.
Airline Stopover poster - The ones who show up about one day a month, contribute to numerous threads then you don't see them for another month.
Officiale - IAC staff members and administrators in all their various posting functions.
Megalo Theatrico - These people start outrageous posts about themselves cause they are desiring to be in the limelight.
Whiny Contrarian poster - These people post veiled complaints and are most interested in subject matter about the unfortunate plight of the indie, or what's wrong with the status quo and IAC.
Animalo Promoto - These people contribute a lot but their focus seems to directly or indirectly be about trying to drum up more action for their page.
One-stop Doofo Promoto - Artists who will only ever in their lifetime start promo threads, never adding to any other discussion. Most of their promo topics are completely impotent also as they seem to not understand that they won't have any success with their cause if they don't make any effort to actually communicate with readers. This also includes the Vote for me at FillInTheBlank.com then you'll never see me again crowd.
(To be continued?)

I'm not much of a poster. I've always preferred to be the 'wise-ass at the back of the room'. I even had a teacher throw an eraser at me in high school (I took that as a big compliment).

Interesting thread concept, remarkable considering it's fly who started it, almost makes you think someone else has 'hacked' his account, maybe we ought to alert tech support :-0
The pigeon holes / boxes are quite overlapping, I think I've been in several of them at different times. Almost all of us are here to promote our music at some level, though often I find myself reading threads when I could have been writing recording or just plain practicing. In fact in pipeline terms I'm 80% lurker and on rarely post.

The "WHO IS FLY?" guessing game is a fun one. I've had a suspicion before...then I received a behind-the-scenes inquiry that made me think I was wrong...now I'm narrowing it down to two individuals...and I STILL don't know if I'm even close.
Enjoyed reading this one.

I know you said "to be continued" Mr Fly but I bet you won't have a category for me.
I am the " Startus Panica Deleto " Poster. I like to start and be in control with the option to close down quickly if it becomes static, boring or embarrasing.
I don't like adding posts to other peoples threads because my impulsive repartee may later result in my becoming the " Cringer Blusher " Poster
I read this several times and I think it's safe to press submit......oh just one more time...........Oh no, now I have become the " Submitus Nervosa " Poster...........Wow, now I'm the "Ramblus Irritatum " Poster............Do you have a " Nauseous Infinitum" category ? .....Aaah, just put me down for the "Pain in the Buttus"

You got this just about right, Fly! Jilly's additions round it out pretty well, except those categories only have one member in each and her name is Jilly. Well, I join her in the Submittus Nervosa slot sometimes. I rattle around loosely in a couple of those slots. I'm probably mostly an Alpha in the Shadows except I'm more of a Beta than an Alpha. Sometimes I'm proud to be an Art Expressionary.
And Hugh - I didn't realize there was an actual "WHO IS FLY?" guessing game. I've been working on it for quite some time now, comparing writing styles and sense of humor to other Pipeliners. Good to know I'm not the only one. There's really only a few possibilities in my mind. Maybe only one, but I'm not one to blab! Let's see now - who could Roach up your Nose be?

Brilliant essay, Fly.
Actually, what I like to talk about most is rather mundane and technical. I like expanding my knowledge about new recording and mixing techniques.
That particular topic wouldn't be of much interest to a goodly percentage of folks here, so I get my fix with such discussion on other sites.
Otoh, many times when I post on IAC ... I seem to unwittingly step in poo, and raise the "Wrath of the Mods" -- that's an new Star Wars movie, you know -- and even though I don't necessarily see it or agree, my blogs are quickly removed from front page rotation -- presumable due to inappropriateness or the perception of negativity ... when actually I'm a very happy chap who doesn't view himself as a complainer at all -- more an observer.
Sigh ... I guess I must have a little part of every one of the above caricatures w/in me at one time or another.

Yeah this is a brilliant pipeline observation Sir Fly. It makes me have to take a long hard look at myself and really think about the kind of blogger I am ( sarcasm, yes ) ... but then it occurs to me that I'm not much of a blogger at all ( sincere deconstruction of self ). I like to stream stations, collect songs on a station I've yet to make active... read allot of what's going in the community here and occasionally find myself chiming in ( blatant rationalization ). I can't seem to be bothered to come up with blog topics myself as I spend most of my writing spurts jacking on with my short useless stories that have no real context here due to a lack of self control, common sense, and a desperate need for an outlet to spew my otherwise benign perspectives.... and I'm probably lazy too ( now I'm really making progress in this self discovery thing ). Soon I will be leaving America back to England and will probably contain my non sequiter like droppings in a jar of ever decaying formaldehyde hence sparing most threads from my ill focused and rather impishly intended syllables ( yeah, self pity, gross huh )... I think I ought to be judged and judged harshly as a blogger... I think I'm bad ... very very bad... and need to be put down. I'm going to start attending bloggers anonymous meetings... if you don't hear from me again it means I'm dead or I'm dead. Just remember Fly... I loved you

Having worked as a bartender/barmaid (God, I hate political correctness), I had to learn the art of listening to and responding to several conversations at the same time. It carries over, and I find myself flitting about the topics, trying to say hi (more or less) to everyone. Sometimes, once in a while, I will post a topic or two but usually find others topics more appealing!!
Guilty as charged.
Continue, Fly. Very interesting topic and right on the mark.

The topic selection these days is making me bleary eyed, the pipeline seems to be headed towards some sort of locals only vibe. Maybe I was too kind with these de_scriptions. :~ l

Define LOCALS ONLY?? You mean elistist musicians who are already all "in" with each other, LOCAL to a specific REGION, Or LOCAL to IACMUSIC's home-base region?
Hmmm... Love you fly, but please extrapolate... -phlegm

It's sad that out of 167,000 people, only about a dozen people start and/or respond to all the threads, make all the comments on artists pages etc. etc. Isn't there anybody else out there with something to say?
|
|
|
5/23/2008 10:33:05 AM
The amount on the right side, as we've said before is open sessions, not number of people.
There are a lot more participants than that Richard. When you start having an outlook like that, it's time to go write a song or something. :D

"out of 167,000 people, only about a dozen people start and/or respond to all the threads"
Can you imagine if all 167,000 posted once a day? Toby would never get any rest, specially if they posted crap that belonged somewhere else like *some* people did today ::innocent look::
~Lace~
PS Great de_scriptions Fly, I fall into several.. currently the one with no substance, depth or real relevance to the topic at hand..........

"Say it's not so Anjuli ! ... going back to England ... It's just not fair .... THEY already have a QUEEN !!!!!!!!"
...but then the cat came back the very next day....just couldn't stay away ...oh no....
Sam, most of that joke was in humor I'm just a bit dark I s'pose. Yeah, I'm going back to England but it's a good thang and I hope to visit here often. I'm glad I'm no Queen cause Queen's don't even get to wipe them selves. How humiliating and tedious! As I'm sure you know (Sam) what it's like when you don't really belong in one place and it's comforting to check in and find a bit of consistency and the IAC "locals" if you will always chirping away. I don't think the blog regulars are chasing away newcomers it is their choice to join in or not... however, those of you that continually give of your time and energy to this community are definitely creating a tone here for sure... I don't know where you all get the time like you do, but I for one am grateful it's nice to know what to can count on I s'pose. It's like a home... I wish I could contribute more but honestly... it's probably good that I don't ha ha. I ain't quite right in the head is all...
Sam.... you warm the cockles of my heart, I believe there is a home for us that heals... I'd love for you to visit mine one day. Love you too fly but you're scary when you're on the rag... fly hormones will have their wicked day !
