city /country divide
I have lived in both city and country and am influenced by the surroundings in music-
but not as ewe might expect!!!
We don't really have cowboys in this country New Zealand-(unless ewe count dairy farmers!)
so country music here is influenced by "Country and Western" influences from listening to USA charts and becomes a clone of that!
However I think there is another type of "Country " which has no name-more like Outdoor music -about nature or the outdoors rather than the traditional country image of a cowboy and his loves and losses.
I like both genres , but feel there are still stereotypes, which push Non city music into a "country" framework.
Whereas "city" music has many genres ranging from pop, metal, industrial, punk, rock, jazz etc
What do ewe think?

Well here in the States we used to have ... Country Gospell, Country Swing, Country Waltz, Country and Western, Rock-a-billy, Blue Grass and Homer and Jethro ... :)
... but except for maybe a few Country, Indie Artist you will find very little Country in Country music anymore ... be dad blammed if they didn't go and make it all citified !
Country to me means SPACE ... go take a drive to the country and what do you find ... SPACE ...
One hears the leaves rustle and the bubbling of a brook and the mating call of the meadowlark and the harmonizing of crickets and cicadas and .... SPACE
A country band used to have a fiddle (full set of strings optional) ... now they use the philharmonic string section to occupy every square inch of SPACE ...
A country band used to have some home made percussion instruments ... now they use a double trap set and timpani and all sorts of electonic doo dads ...
Country used to mean natural (cuz it means nature) with all it's perfect imperfections ... Then country folk started listening to them thar city slickers who told them their music had to be processed and blended and all mushed together ... it had to be perfect ... which is sooooooooo imperfect to be called country ...
If you want to use Country as a genre ... Country folks won't know where to find you ... Cuz there ain't NO country left in country ...
... and that's what I think ... :)

I think I dislike "genres"! LOL.
They do represent a useful way of categorizing. But I much prefer the "yay" or "nay" genres. I'm tempted to start two stations by the name (lol)...

... and another thing ... them thar city slickers started showin' up here in the country ... with there fast talking ways and shiny, fancy cars and started wooin' our women away ... next thing ya know our women were wearin store bought dresses and havin city tainted babies ... and just the thought of us havin city nephews and nieces and such ... makes a country boy wanna woller in the pig sty just to rub off the city smell !
... although I must admit ... the city does have it's benefits .... Sweet City Woman

The Stampeders (from Calgary, home of the calgary "Stampede") played in Estevan last year. Estevan, Saskatchewan (about 12,000 people) is the nearest large town to us.
Our singer is a huge Stampeders fan. We cover "Carry Me" and "Devil You". Neither of which ever gets a big reaction from the crowd. Which is kinda sad because they're good toonz.

He was really impressed with their live show. There's only three guys in the band, but they all play and all sing to fill out the sound. He was welcome to hang out backstage after the show.
Their greatest hits album is tremendous.
