Thanks Ken. I have a real love/hate thing going with Cubase. We've been using it for years and I'm finally feeling like I'm tapping into it's power. But it still takes days to mix and master a song. I always have to listen to it in several different situations, the car, headphones, a good stereo, a bad stereo, wait 'till the next day and listen again... I don't know if that will ever change, but the end result gets better.
I also want to emphasize the importance of mastering. I'm not saying I'm a pro at it yet - I'm still training my ears. But the more you do it the more you start to recognize certain aspects of the mix. I won't name names, but there are some songs on IAC that I'm sure were professionally recorded, mixed and mastered, and yes, are in the Big 50, but I think are very difficult to listen to. They are really LOUD, which is part of the mastering process, but there are some frequencies that make music fatiguing. When I compare what we do to music produced in multi-million dollar studios, yeah, I can tell the difference, but it is amazing to me how close we can come. When i say we, I mean all of us DIY Indies with a few thousand dollars, a pair of ears and a passion for high fidelity.
As for the artwork, I'm always thinking about ways to combine art with music. What do you have in mind? I've never applied artwork to any music except our own. I'm not sure how it would work... thinking... hmmm....
