Hold on (thank you to Musing station) and -M-
I learned over the weekend that a friend of mine and his wife have spit up after a long time together. While the relationship had somewhat of a turbulent past they stuck it out that is until now.

Hold on
V1
I walked down the street today
where we said our vows in May
the church bells still ring 12 times at noon
as I stood on the corner
my shadow growing longer
I would have sworn those bells rang out of tune.
bridge:
I know that I'll miss your smile
and the twinkle in your eye
Those things they don't break me right in two
what really gets me
maybe you would agree
Is how we fell apart apart of the blue
Ch
I wish I'd been a little stronger
and held on a little longer
my vision turns from gold to grey
I guess that we got older
Now I no longer hold her
Another of lives failures on display.
V2
On that cold day in December
That I'll always remember
When there was no ribbons and no bows
the snow it was so white
your heart as cold as ice
on the day that you gave away our love
bridge:
I know that I'll miss your smile
and the twinkle in your eye
Those things they don't break me right in two
what really gets me
maybe you would agree
Is how we fell apart apart of the blue
Ch
I wish I'd been a little stronger
and held on a little longer
my vision turns from gold to grey
I guess that we got older
Now I no longer hold her
Another of lives failures on display.

I do not have a great command of the English language but I must say that I find here some beautiful poetic soaring, a very romantic lyricism, it may also from my point of view be close to a film scenario.
Ken you really have talent !

Hey Marc,
Thank you for the comment. This song was one of those strange things where when I heard about my friend it made me sad to know they had given up on each other what a terrible thing.
The words pretty much came overnight and in on sitting I think I wrote it in about 30 minutes which does not happen very often. I tried to create an image that people would recognize with parts of relationships that anyone ever in them can relate to.
Hopefully I can put music to it I have a stack of lyrics that are words with no song.
I did make a typo it should say:
bridge:
I know that I'll miss your smile
and the twinkle in your eye
Those things they don't break me right in two
what really gets me
maybe you would agree
Is how we fell apart out of the blue
instead of
bridge:
I know that I'll miss your smile
and the twinkle in your eye
Those things they don't break me right in two
what really gets me
maybe you would agree
Is how we fell apart apart of the blue

Thank you Rhythm kings. Since the song lyrics have meaning to me reading them makes me sad. I guess its a reminder how fragile relationships are and the emptiness left when they are gone.
I know its hard to judge such things with only words but I wonder do to these words strike a reaction from anyone?
It seems to me this song should be done as country or slow ballad type would you agree?

A good songwriter should try to make you feel something through out and in the words. I certainly felt that.
Much Respect,

Thank you Bruce,
Yes I was thinking on possibly leaving it barren with acoustic guitar and vocal only.
I came up with a chord pattern and its starting to take on a life of its own. I'll have to see where the song leads me but I do appreciate your comments.

These are good lyrics.
Outside of a typo, which was
"another of lives failures on display"...
the correct form of that would be:
"another of life's failure's on display" I think.
I looked for it on your page. it's not there.
do you have music for this? I'd like to hear it.
I would have listened to the Dicky Bunch but it's not there anymore apparently.
Dick Whitman will be ever so heartbroken. I will give him my hanky and console him.
Anyway, these seriously are good lyrics,
and a sentiment you've delivered well,
almost too well; I hope your knowledge of this isn't first hand,
and/or never becomes first hand. Because trust me, that sucks dogs.
Good work, looking forward to hearing the music to it.

Hi ALJ,
Thank you for the kinds words. I revised it a bit after I did came up with a chord pattern and its starting to take on a life of its own. Still working out a few rough bits before I can record it's a work in progress.
Yes there were a couple typo's the one you mentioned and the other one
bridge should say:
I know that I'll miss your smile
and the twinkle in your eye
Those things they don't break me right in two
what really gets me
maybe you would agree
Is how we fell apart out of the blue
instead of
bridge:
I know that I'll miss your smile
and the twinkle in your eye
Those things they don't break me right in two
what really gets me
maybe you would agree
Is how we fell apart apart of the blue
As I said in my post this song is about a friend of mine. I have not seen him in a few years but we got together at a party and I found out about him and his wife breaking up. It really struck me as I know their relationship they have was not always great but until now they always fought through it. Until now that is they gave up on each other how terrible.
My situation is fine. Will be 19 years and counting.
Thanks again for your comments and kind words.

Ken

Well I found out I need a third verse so here it is.
Hold on
V1
I walked down the street today
where we said our vows in May
the church bells still ring 12 times at noon
as I stood there on the corner
my shadow growing ever longer
I would have sworn those bells rang out of tune.
bridge:
I know that I'll miss your smile
and the twinkle in your eye
Those things they don't break me right in two
instead what really gets me
maybe you would agree
Is how we fell apart out of the blue
Ch
I wish I'd been a little stronger
and held on a little longer
as my vision turns from gold to grey
I guess that we got older
Now I no longer hold you
you can’t hold what’s already gone away.
V2
On that cold day in December
I'll always remember
the day there was no ribbons and no bows
the snow it was so white
your heart as cold as ice
on the day that you gave away our love
bridge:
I know that I'll miss your smile
and the twinkle in your eye
Those things they don't break me right in two
what really gets me
maybe you would agree
Is how we fell apart out of the blue
Ch:
I wish I'd been a little stronger
and held on a little longer
my vision turns from gold to grey
I guess that we got older
Now I no longer hold her
you can’t hold what’s already gone away.
V3
We held on for all these years
Through all the joys and the tears
I guess it was never quite enough
What happens when your blue skies gone
The birds no longer sing a song
I found out the day I called your bluff
bridge:
I know that I'll miss your smile
and the twinkle in your eye
Those things they don't break me right in two
what really gets me
maybe you would agree
Is how we fell apart out of the blue
Ch
I wish I'd been a little stronger
and held on a little longer
my vision turns from gold to grey
I guess that we got older
Now I no longer hold her
Another of life’s failures on display.
