Sudden death of musician and valued member of my recording team.
It is with much sadness that I post the following information regarding the sudden passing on Saturday, December 9, 2017, of Carl Horton, pianist and valued musician and member of the production and recording team on my ‘Those Were The Days’ album and on my new and as yet untitled album which we are currently recording.
Carl’s contribution to both albums has been monumental to say the least. You can hear Carl’s piano and Hammond organ proficiency on my cover of “Little Darlin’” (piano), “The Night Hank Williams Came To Town” (piano) and “Southern Love” (Hammond organ) - both songs on my ‘Those Were The Days’ album.
His work and contribution on both albums has been responsible for raising the bar for me as a songwriter and recording artist. His passing leaves large shoes to be filled.
Carl was born in Indiana, U.S.A. and proudly maintained citizenship for both Canada and the United States.
A pianist, composer, arranger and educator, Carl was an accompanist to some of Canada’s musical greats including Ronnie Hawkins and Ian Thomas.
Carl was a member of the Faculty of Music at Mohawk College in Hamilton.
In addition to having scored many television shows for CITY-TV, CTV, LIFE, Bravo, TVO, among others, he has written numerous film scores, among them the holiday classic, Home For Christmas starring Mickey Rooney and the award winning British short film Breakfast With Monica.
Some of Carl’s performance highlights include appearing before Prince Charles, Prime Minister Jean Chretien, and President George H.W. Bush.
On behalf of my fellow band musicians, production and recording crew and team, I extend our sympathy and condolences to Carl’s family and our heartfelt thanks and sincere love and appreciation for having had Carl in our lives and music.

Thank you Verity, Scott, Norm, Dolores, Todd and Bryon for your thoughts and kind words, all very much appreciated.
We shall overcome not without feeling the loss but knowing that Carl would want us to continue with bringing the album to fruition. The music community is long and strong and we shall bring on board a pianist who will do honour to the work that Carl has put into the songs on the album.
When completed and released, the album will become another part of Carl's legacy to the wider world of music. The loss to his family can never be replaced.
Carl's sudden death comes hard on the heels of the deaths of four other special family members and friends in my and my wife's families since the end of October.
We shall overcome.
Thanks for your support,
Neil
