The Indieland Collaboration Blog
Get guide files at The Indieland Collaboration Page. The count-off starts about five seconds in. The ending is really long at this point, I have an idea for the ending, but I'd like to discuss how many times we want to let the last chorus go around before I do any more tracks.
So instrumentalists may want to wait a bit, but if you've picked a line to sing, go for it, sing some choruses too.

That was Dayvel on the above post, this is FT, just using this page so I can add things as it goes and not have to print out the whole list everytime it changes.
okay our producer provided a basic drum click so you can start recording your parts, sing all the choruses (if you want) marked with a XX below and anything else that comes to you and send them to DayVel. All you need including his Email address is on that page he linked to in the above post.
1. One day I woke up so starved for good music, I been scannin' the dial for a week -Hugh

Hiya everybody!
I d/loaded the rough track. It will be fine I think for recording the vocal line to a click. Do we have a drummist tho? Or a bass player...........if someone would lay a groovy drum track down, (maybe Muriel?) I would stick the bass on, so we have something to build on..........unless, of course, someone else is gagging to do the bass line...........?

Our producer, DayVel is an outstanding drummer. I believe the plan is that he is going to add that a little further down the road.

Great that everybody's checking in. Here's where I'm at - I sat down and wrote out the melody and chords today and I'm working out a slightly different rhythm guitar part going in a more Keith Richards type of direction. Same basic chord structure, but with more junk thrown in. It's going to take me a couple days to work it out and learn to play it. And I might decide it sux.
So - instrumentalists hold off a bit, but singers start singin'.

Well, a lot has happened pretty quick, I guess when we do vocal parts , we don't get to hear the previous singer, kinda helps set a feel or mood, It will be interesting to hear how this vocal trac is gonna sound all random like. Also I think you should tell people you want the tracks dry, without plugins or effects so you can kinda make them sound the same. Am I right? Is all this somewhere else.
As far as vocals, Ill take any line or lines anyone wants to give me. Peace
Oh after hearing Scotts song a few times, I think you were waiting in the wings with this song, seems too well written and thought out. Just a thought. Peace, John

Nope. I just haven't worked on music for so long I was sort of ripe. I read Hugh's thread and the line "The music's better in Indieland" popped up and I just knew there was a song there. I did work pretty hard on it that night after I promised it to y'all. But I'm a bit of a songwritah, listen to my page sometime. :)
I agree that the tracks should probably be dry, will make it easier for him.

I guess we can still sing the lines to get a feel for it and adjust if need be. I'm almost over this darn cold and will be able to record something - hopefully it will make the cut. The cold does give me a bit of a rough edge though :-)

I just looked at the list of singers and gave everybody remaining a line. If you don't want it, that's ok, we can change it.

Hi! It might seem insignificant at this stage because everyone's sorta wrapped up in the recording process, but since I volunteered to create a graphic for this venture rather than anything audible, I thought I should jump in and let you all know that I have started something, inspired by the song as it exists so far. I'm hoping I can create something worthy of going beyond a 400pixel song page graphic, possibly a printed poster. I considered posting my rough sketch but it's not far enough along yet. Once it is, I will.
If there's one thing that digital music has diminished rather than enhancing, it's album cover art. It's great that IAC has provided a solution to this problem. I'd like to bring back the days when the 12"x12" gatefold sleeve was as important as the grooves within.

Since this whole thing started as a fantasy I immediately saw my place in it, since I sort of specialize in psychedelic fantasy art. I can't sing a lick and there are better guitarists around here (...Larree...) so I hope I can contribute something unique.

Alright, so I download the song and record a vocal track. Do I just send the small portion of a vocal file? What about the chorus? Does it need to be spaced rightly in place with this lead vocal? Also, if William wants to play a bass part, should it be a complete song length track with the intro clicks included? I've never done this before so excuse my ignorance. Thanks! -M-

It's best to send the whole file. A click at the start for sync is a good idea. See the "When You Record and Send Your Files" topic for more details.
As far as the bass goes, I have some very definite ideas about what I want and I'm leaning towards playing it myself. At the same time, I don't want to turn down a killer track. All I ask is that William really key off on what the robot drums (which will be replaced) and rhythm guitar are doing. I'll send you a track without bass if you would like.
Please feel free to contact me at iaccollab@mp3forkidz.com . I may miss your reply if it gets buried in the blog comments.

I apologize for not submitting my vocals. I am at a loss. I had to leave town and now I am back bbbuuuttttt (you like my big but) I don't know how to friggin record them. Not from my computer anyway. If someone is in the close LA area and has the means let me know and I will swing by and lay it down. If not, alas, Stealing Venus will not be represented. It is sounding great though!!!!

You might want to consider downloading a simple and free multitrack recording program called Audacity, it's available for Windows (98 thru Vista), Mac (OS 9 or OS X) and Linux/Unix. Even if you don't use it for this project, it's a great little tool for getting down ideas that hit you while you're at the computer.
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
If you want to try it for this project, those cheap little computer mics can sound surprisingly good. Just don't put it on the desk/table that houses your computer (this cuts down on the sound it picks up from your hard drives.)

it's soundin' real good!
when I get back from a business thing mid week I'll try and round up some people to sing some of the lines that are open if there still are any.

ok, FT here. Larree and Stealing Venus are recording their parts this week. We need new volunteers for lines 13, 16, and 17. Anybody know somebody who should be on this that you want to ask ?
Also DayVel added a basic track without my voice on it, might make it easier. He said if anybody has any parts they'd like to add of any kind, send em!

It's funny how these things start out with a bang and then slow down. Anyway we have a few more people who are going to be recording their parts soon and we still maybe need 1 or 2 more voices so jump in if you want to get involved.

Cool! Don't delete 'em off your hard drive until I can verify that I got them. I have wicked spam - I'll check what gets caught in the filters, but I don't want to take the chance that I miss them.

Larry ... I use audacity all the time but I have found it a bit unstable for recording so I use another free program to record my wave files ... it's called wavepad and you can get it here ... http://nch.com.au/software/index.html
I record and then save it to a wave file in Wavepad then I open the files up into Audacity to add effects and mix..
You need to go to your computers control panel ... click on the sounds icon and set your recording to either.... lin-in/ line out... or microphone .. or which ever port you are using into your sound card...
in audacity set your preferences to the same setting...
if you need anything else give me a yell and I'll try to walk you through it..
